15.01.2022 So what’s this challenge all about then? Before most of the world went into lockdown and kids needed to go over to online learning, I was scheduled to give a pr...esentation to the pupils of Bali Island School, formerly Bali International School about what service and serving others meant to me and why it has been a large part of my life. Like so many International schools, service is an important part of the students' curriculum, development and learning. Of course with the restrictions that are now in place I’ve been unable to deliver this presentation and therefore I decided to set myself a challenge that might inspire those kids and others to do something similar. In any case it is always better to show somebody rather than just tell them. Over the last couple of years I’ve been fortunate enough to spend time in Bali as a result of my partners teaching job here. Like the rest of the world, Bali has now had its way of life and future sent into uncertainty. The island’s economy and the income of the majority of its population is largely dependent on tourism. That tourism no longer exists and is unlikely to return for the foreseeable future. With many families living on a hand to mouth basis the impact of lack of tourism has meant that even daily needs can’t be satisfied and adults and children are going hungry. With kids being forced into home schooling the reality is that education for many has literally stopped. There is no Zoom or virtual classes for those in the poor and rural areas and families have to prioritise food over basic educational supplies. In any case many of the adults in the poorer communities have little to no formal education themselves and so it is almost impossible for them to assist in formally educating their child. For children to develop, they need mental as well as physical nourishment. I’m fully aware that suffering and hardship is being felt by practically everyone right now. This isn’t an attempt to prove the need is greater here than anywhere else in the world or that the kids here are in anyway more deserving than others. The fact is 300 hundred children die every hour of everyday of malnutrition throughout the world and I’m sure since the start of this Pandemic that rate will have risen. I am concerned that Bali could start to add to those statistics in the future. There are a number of initiatives both local and expat that are organising free meals and food supplies for the needy on the island and that is good to see but it is still not sufficient. I’m under no illusion that I can solve the challenge of feeding the increasing number of hungry children on this island or provide them with everything they need to continue education at home. One of the challenges I face is that visa restrictions mean that I’m unable to even volunteer here on the island. So the challenge I’ve set myself is not focused on what I can’t do, but what I can do even if it is only a tiny fraction of what is actually needed. I’m hoping it will:- 1.) Raise some monetary or physical donations for us to be able to supply some of the basic educational and hygiene supplies for kids. Things like pencils, books and soap are all needed. 2.) Inspire others in a position to help to do so. When the Pandemic first started to grip the world, the press coverage went into overdrive regarding the fate and potential collapse of Bali. Concerns and rumours of future civil unrest were rife and this prompted many expats to return to their home countries as a result of fears for their personal safety. Many believed a return to home would give them better chances of survival and improved medical care. This has compounded the economic problems arising from the lack of tourism. Like everyone else, myself and my partner Sarah were very concerned and the idea of fleeing was the sensible option based on the limited and somewhat sensationalist information we had. Once we rationalised our situation here, it did not sit well with either of us to run at the first sign of a problem. Sarah had a commitment to her school and to those kids she teaches and staying here was the best way to serve them . The reality from a personal perspective is that the majority of the local people I meet are grateful to those expats who have stayed when the going got tough here. They are even more appreciative of the money we spend here and there is no civil unrest or animosity towards us. So why 19 Kilometres a day for 19 days? Well firstly I’m hoping that the significance of the number 19 is not lost on you . Secondly whilst we have restrictions on movement here, they are not as severe as many places in the world. I want to turn my relative freedoms of movement into something beneficial for others ( of course being sensible and socially distancing ). Lastly, for the last 18 months I have benefitted and enjoyed all the splendid things Bali has to offer including its hospitality and food! Now is the time to use some of those extra kilos of unnecessary body weight and turn them back into energy to fuel my 19km each day to help others even if it is in some small way. Will it be enough? Of course not, nothing we do individually can ever be enough but it is something and with enough people doing something we are all heading in the right direction to come out of this hopefully better in some way than when we went into it. Anything you donate will be greatly appreciated. To donate visit www.worldwideaction.org and click on donate. 100 percent of money raised through this challenge will go to help the local children in Bali
