15.01.2022 "The more risks you allow your children to make, the better they learn to look after themselves." What do we do? Across our Services at Adventure Patch, children are invited to participate in various learning opportunities. Some of which include:... Woodwork with the use of hammers, nails, hand drills and saws Loose parts play with items often viewed by adults as junk such as boxes in a variety of shapes and sizes, Ropes, Large materials, Reels of tape, Ladders, Pallets, Scissors, Stanley knives, Cones, pool noodles, milk crates etc Fire pits where children are invited to cook and learn about the value of fire and fire safety Encourage children to climb, jump and challenge their individual physical skills Bush and beach excursions where children and educators explore the wonderful resources nature provides. Why do we do it and why is it important to us? Implementing this type play supports children to develop important life skills such as; Building resilience and persistence Awareness of their own capabilities and limits The ability to assess and make judgement about risk Confidence and independence Resourcefulness Creativity and inventiveness Curiosity and wonder Problem solving Understanding consequence to action Balance and coordination Handling tools safely and with purpose

13.01.2022 Happy Diwali Day, 'Festival of Lights' - celebrating diversity and the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

13.01.2022 Adventure Patch was delighted to have officially opened it’s much anticipated deck extension at our Blackmans Bay Outside School Hours Care (BBOHSC) site. The unveiling took place in front of Federal MPs, Councilors, dignitaries, staff and child care children. With a focus on play-based learning, the individual child and how they learn, our organisation has grown from a twenty-child day care centre based in Blackmans Bay [formally Blackmans Bay Childrens Services] to a commu...nity minded, state-wide not-for-profit organisation that now looks after in-excess of two thousand children. BBOHSC has been located on the grounds of Blackmans Bay Primary School since 1998. Adventure Patch has had a long partnership with Blackmans Bay Primary School, collaboratively working together to ensure the best interests of children are met. As a former student at Blackmans Bay Primary School, CEO Lynne Moran said, I remember fondly my time in the playground at Blackmans Bay Primary School. With ‘messy, nature based play’ at the heart of our philosophy and with space a commodity at BBOHSC, we wanted to enhance the indoor and outdoor play experience for BBOHSC children. A grant was sought through the Department of Education’s Education Care Unit. Adventure Patch was awarded the grant in late 2019 and with additional funds being provided by our Board, construction started in April 2020 during the initial stages of the Covid-19 outbreak. This was an ideal opportunity to undertake building works, ensuring minimal disruption to service and children. Mrs. Moran said. Scott Norris, Adventure Patch’s Director of Outside School Hours Care, said The deck has changed the outdoor space physically. However, it has also totally transformed the way children interact with this outdoor space, and has provided greater opportunities for children in care to experience. We feel very honoured and privileged to have this addition at Blackmans Bay Outside School Hours Care. Mr. Norris said. The deck was officially named ‘The Loosmore Deck’ in honour of past chair and long serving Board member, Jeanette Loosmore who recently stepped down from the Adventure Patch Board having served for more than thirteen years. Jeanette has been invaluable in honouring the history of Blackmans Bay Children’s Services and Adventure Patch and leaves a legacy for all of us to live up to. Said Mrs. Moran. Ms. Loosmore unveiled a plaque at the official opening.

11.01.2022 A nice simple video for children to watch.

11.01.2022 We were sitting on the couch together with a book and I was trying to get him to point out and name some of the numbers on the page that he recognized. He had ...zero interest. I had a moment of panic... ‘Where is he at now? Is he behind? How will he manage in September?...’ and I almost pushed him. I almost let my worries take over the moment - but decided against it. Later on outside, while playing with the phone, he’d ask me what’s the number for the pizza store? So I’d write some numbers down on the log. He’d look at the numbers on the phone and punch them in, naming the ones that he recognized and asking for help with the others. He’d call and order us a pizza. Then he’d ask what’s the number for the doctors office? I’d wipe the old numbers off and write some new ones. This went on for quite awhile. And as I watched I realized (again as I have so many times before in my 17 years of parenting) that’s its far better (and more effective) to let learning happen naturally - and playfully. And I wish that I’d video taped this moment because (as if he was reading my thoughts) he put his chubby little hand over the mouth piece, and whispered See? I know my numbers. Mama got schooled.

03.01.2022 Dear Families, We know many of our families are feeling concerned about COVID-19 and the impact it will have on us all including access and safety in child care. Every morning we wake up to new developments which means we have to be very responsive as things change. We want to assure you that the senior leadership team at Adventure Patch has a process to talk every morning and make decisions as they are needed. We also talk throughout each day as new information comes in.... We are very focused on making sure our response is proportionate and based on the best advice available. We are constantly monitoring information from health experts as well as the regulatory bodies in our field. This allows us to balance the need you have for childcare, so you can continue with your normal life as much as possible, with the need to keep the children, families and staff members of the Adventure Patch community safe. The bottom line is that we are not health experts so we will be highly responsive to the advice and direction give by health officials and our own industry regulators. Whatever they tell us we need to do will be done. There are some things that you will see us implementing at our services and also some things you can do to help. At our services: Hand washing and sanitising routines have been implemented for all people that enter the building on arrival please follow the signs We have increased assistance for children to practice good hygiene (hand-washing, sneezing into elbow, etc) There is additional cleaning of surfaces that children are in contact this is being done by staff during the day and we are working with the cleaners who come in every night to increase the cleaning they do Things you can do are: Please follow the medical advice being provided and dont bring your child to care if they are unwell If your child becomes unwell while in care, please respond promptly to a request they be collected Outside of care, you can limit close contact with others for example, if you are in public with your children, a bush setting or beach walk with limited contact with other people are safer than shopping centres and other indoor environments This is a challenging time for everyone and we are striving to find the right answers for our community. If you have any concerns, please contact me directly on 0417 545 113 or [email protected] but we also ask you to understand that our decisions are guided by advice from health authorities and industry regulators. All the best to everyone in the Adventure Patch community Simon Thiessen Chief Operating Officer

03.01.2022 School ending early & Vacation Care With todays decision that Tasmanian schools will close early, we will extend our Vacation Care program to cover these student free days. For families that need Vacation Care, the new start date will be Monday 6 April. The format of Vacation Care will change to ensure we observe social distancing principles. All days will be based at the services with local excursions (bush walks, beach visits) taking the place of other excursions that in...volve indoor spaces and crowded bus trips. When the children are inside at the service, we will implement strategies to enhance social distancing and good personal hygiene. With smaller numbers anticipated, we are likely to have children more spread out and fewer of them engaged in any one activity. We also have additional cleaning measures in place both by our Educators and also by our contract cleaners to focus on more frequently used surfaces For full details about the Vacation Care program, please visit https://adventurepatch.org.au/portfolio/vacation-care/ - the new program is currently being developed and should be online within 24 hours (Thursday afternoon) Our usual policy for Vacation Care is that there will be no penalty for cancellations received before the holidays commence (so by Friday 3 April) if you want to change or cancel an existing booking, please let us know ASAP by emailing [email protected]

01.01.2022 Hi Families, information about care arrangements for the student free days from Monday 6th to Thursday 9th April will be forwarded to families this afternoon.
