22.01.2022 Amazing whale sighting as we came into Port Clinton. Janet from Koonya took these photos We saw at least 30

21.01.2022 Sunday 27/9/2015 Our grandson Xaviar turns 3 today. Called him via FaceTime, but he wasn't up for a B'day chat. The Roos gave it a good go but it was always a tough ask, but well done. Left Pancake creek at 5.30 heading to Bundaberg. Janet and Mark decided to join us. Great to have them along again. Conditions were good but direction of wind not ideal. Can't get over how cold it has been. Where's the tropical weather?? Said our goodbyes at Bundaberg Marina. They were heading to Rooneys point on Fraser and we were going to South White Cliffs on Fraser. It has been amazing to be finishing this trip with another Hanse 445.

20.01.2022 Tuesday 22/9/2015 Up at 5 once more for the journey to Pearl Bay. Had a coffee then Wayne topped up the fuel. He got the seat out to go up the mast but miraculously, overnight, the tangled line had slid down the halyard within reach, praise God, so we avoided a time consuming exercise and were able to take off immediately. As we were leaving a pod of dolphins off our starboard side about 30 meters saw us off. We motor sailed and for the first time had other yachts out with u...s. We have been surprised to be the only ones out at times. Nicer weather must have made them travel. We witnessed huge drifts of orange scum covering the ocean for miles. Last year just in patches but this was enormous in area, rolling in towards us. As we approached the entrance to Pearl Bay, we saw a group of 9 whales to our left about 300 mtrs off as we were watching them suddenly one appeared 50+ mtrs on our left heading toward us. Wayne revved up the motor to get out of its way. Close call. Once we caught our breath off to our right, we saw another 9 whales 300 mtrs away again. So now we had seen them on both sides. As we watched the 9 on our right, further to the right of them were another 9 frolicking around. Another yacht was approaching them and he suddenly made a turn to his left to avoid them and headed out to sea on a different course. We then watched the 2 groups merge and what a sight there was tail slapping and spouting non-stop. We now know where all the whales have been. What a magnificent sight. As if we hadn't seen enough, a little further on, just 100 mtrs away, we were surprised by a mother and baby playing. What an amazing day. So needed after yesterday. Finally anchored in Pearl Bay around 5pm. Lovely still night despite the cloud of midges. See more

18.01.2022 Wednesday 30/9/2015 Elbow Point to Mooloolaba. Beautiful sunny morning after storms last night. Left at 5.45. Last early morning ... yay! We motored past Inskip Pt recently in the news where a huge sinkhole happened at the edge of the entrance to the bay. As we sailed past Rainbow Cliffs in Wide Bay, spotted 2 whales to our left about 200 mtrs away and then the tail of a whale appeared about 50 mtrs to our right ahead of us then disappeared, thank goodness, as too close. Kept...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Thursday 24/9/2015 Enjoyed our sleep in till 6.30. Relaxed over breakfast. I washed our sheets whilst Wayne filled our tank with the remaining Gerry can and then we made 2 trips over to the servo to fill our tank up and have 3 gerry cans in reserve for our trip tomorrow. We have been using a bit of fuel as have been traveling into the wind and waves. We then caught the bus into Yeppoon to have lunch at 'Flour' cafe that we enjoyed on previous visits. They have the best home m...ade pies and salad and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Mark and Janet from 'Koonya' had come to the marina from Keppel where they had spent the night. They tried to continue south in the morning but conditions were awful so turned around and came to the marina. We caught up on both our last 3 days of travel and were in a berth close by. Later in the day they refueled and moved to a berth next to us. Wayne and Mark discussed our trip tom to Pancake Creek and all decided to leave early the next morning. See more

09.01.2022 Monday 28/9/2015 Left Bundaberg at 7 am heading to Fraser Is. Light winds and a calm sea made sailing a pleasure. Unfortunately progress was slower than we would have liked. We made it to just south of North White Cliffs in readiness to travel in high tide down through the Sandy Straits. Storms appeared all around us whilst traveling making for interesting skies. Great sunset as we were anchoring.

08.01.2022 Wednesday 23/9/2015 Woke to a thick smoke fog and cold conditions. It seems the burning off near Yeppoon had blown all around. As we came out of Pearl Bay saw another mother and baby whale. The mother looked to be sleeping on the surface whilst the baby was playing. Not sure if this is how they sleep. A little further on and again the same sight. Magical in this glassy water. Headed to Keppel Bay Marina. Totally out of supplies except for muesli, bars and canned tuna. Arrived at marina at 2pm then caught the bus into Yeppoon to get supplies. Both feeling really tired from the long days of sailing. Looking forward to a sleep in past 5am.

08.01.2022 Tuesday 29/9/2015 Left at 7.30am to make our way down the Sandy Straits with the tide. It was a slow journey maneuvering in the channels. On the way up in May we came aground so I was a bit on edge. We had never seen so many boats traversing the area as today. Weather much quieter day so probably this was the factor. Witnessed some amazing cloud formations again and storms over land. Four hours later we were finally through and anchoring near Elbow Pt. After lunch we relaxed on deck and then did a few chores in readiness for our last journey tomorrow to Mooloolaba.

07.01.2022 Friday 25/9/2015 Left Keppel Bay Marina at 5.30 heading to Pancake Creek. Sea was good but the wind was in front so of no assistance. Mark and Janet were with us again. As They were in front, they were to check out conditions around the corner from Yellow Patch. They called us to say they were returning to the protected bay inside the peninsular. Wayne decided to continue and check it out. We picked up a good wind and thought the conditions were ok so decided to keep going d...own towards Gladstone. An hour or so later they decided to follow us and head to Rods Harbour. We were having a great run at 7 - 8 knots, so decided to continue on and meet them in Rods Harbour. The target was to try and get to Bundaberg marina the next day. We were about 11 hours away so another 5am start coming up. Wanted to watch the Prelim AFL final but went to bed at half time. Hawks looked like they would pull it off. Just would love the Roos to cause an upset Friday night ... Go Roos. See more

04.01.2022 Saturday 26/9/2015 Left Rods Harbour at 5.30 heading for Bundaberg. The wind was very strong, so decided to pull into Pancake creek nearby, for the night. Janet and Mark had decided to stay there as they wanted to go to Lady Musgrave Is. for a couple of days. We will part here but it has been great traveling with other people, especially with the same model yacht (but 2 years younger).

02.01.2022 Sunday 15/11/2015 Last day in Sydney. Wayne was meeting up with Julia for lunch and as I was still unwell took the bus to Chatswood. Didn't want to pass this flu onto Julia. They drove to Bondi Beach and had a great meal in a funky corner cafe. Then did a long round trip back to Bankstown via Pt Piper and THE Harbour view. Back at Lane Cove we again had very heavy rain overnight.
