25.01.2022 Meet Rogue She is looking very pleased after having her final surgical staples removed post- GDV surgery. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (also called gastric torsion or bloat) is a life-threatening condition in which the dog's stomach fills with air, fluid or food, and the stomach becomes twisted, causing pressure build up and restricting blood flow. Some deep chested breeds such as German Shepherds are more at risk, but other factors can contribute regardless of breed - su...ch as eating too much food too quickly, or exercising vigorously after eating. Some of the early warning signs are: a distended or firm abdomen unsuccessful attempts to vomit pale gums restlessness or anxious behaviour excessive drooling If you see any of these symptoms in your dog, it's important to contact your Animal Emergency Centre immediately, as early detection and treatment are vital to your pet's recovery!

24.01.2022 Did you know that today is World Reptile Awareness Day? Reptiles are everywhere and serve an important role in our ecosystem, for example, common snakes help keep down bugs and rodents that would love to make a nest in your home! While you may not want to snuggle a reptile (or maybe you do - we won't judge you), it's nice to remember to appreciate them.... See more

22.01.2022 Today is World Kindness Day; a day to highlight good deeds in the community. We ask you to recognise an act of kindness and in turn, display an act of kindness yourself. If you can do anything today - do it with kindness

21.01.2022 One of our team members had a visit from an Eastern Brown snake today. She grabbed the closest box to keep it safe, which just happened to house the AEC Common Pet Toxins brochures. If you’d like to join the snake in some light reading about this topic, you can find the online brochure here: https://www.aecvets.com.au///09/Common-Pet-Toxins-2016.pdf... (Our slithery friend was relocated by a licensed snake catcher)

18.01.2022 It's Halloween today and who better a symbol of Halloween than the black cat? Did you know.... There are 22 cat breeds that can come with a solid black coat. Black cats are omens of both good and bad luck, depending on where you are and the situation. Black cats are less likely to be adopted from shelters.... Regardless of superstitions, we think black cats are absolutely adorable. Have a happy Halloween friends.

16.01.2022 Most of us know that dogs can't eat chocolate But did you know the following unusual items can also be dangerous to our feline and canine friends? * Salt * Unbaked bread dough * Fertiliser... * Moth balls * Alcohol * Socks and underwear * String * Human medications You would think these would be unpalatable, yet we still see plenty of pets in our emergency centres having gobbled them down!!! What's the weirdest thing your pet has eaten? See more

15.01.2022 Hands up if your pet has a grandparent It's World Grandparent day today. While some countries celebrate this beautiful day of appreciation on other days of the week, today is the day we celebrate in Australia. A big thank you to our parents who are the grandparents to our 4 legged children.

15.01.2022 Meet Amira! This beautiful girl was one of two patients we have had in the past week who ate Christmas fruit cake. Christmas cake or pudding poses a number of risks:... 1. toxic raisins 2. alcohol that is sometimes found in these festive desserts 3. the high sugar and calorie content These ingredients can make our pets very sick, leading to kidney or liver failure or even pancreatitis. If you suspect your pet might have eaten fruit cake please get in contact with your Animal Emergency Centre immediately so they can begin any necessary life-saving treatment!

14.01.2022 As warmer weather approaches, snakes will be more active in your pet’s environment. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, immediately contact the Animal Emergency Centre Midland as they may need emergency treatment, including anti-venom. Possible signs of snake bite include: ... * Swelling/tenderness around the area of the potential bite * Sudden severe bleeding often into the area bitten * Panting or difficulty breathing * Vomiting or salivation * Initial collapse, even if they seem to recover afterwards! * Dilated pupils * Trembling, difficulty in walking or pacing around anxiously * Depression Bites are commonly inflicted on or around the face, head, neck, throat and front legs If possible, take note of the colour and patterns on the snake, but do not ever attempt to catch a live snake.

11.01.2022 Good meowning everyone Our names are Poppet and Gremlin, and we have signed up to be kitty lifesavers! We are 2.5 and 1.5 year old moggies who both live a very relaxed and lazy life. We were both orphaned kittens who were rescued by our human ma. She raised us from teeny, tiny babies (Poppet from only 2 days old!) and inevitably fell in love with us and just couldn’t bring herself to rehome us. We live the life of luxury with all the toys, beds and food gals like us could ...want. We both enjoy eating snacks of all kinds (hot chicken is our favourite) and sometimes we eat things we shouldn’t (Poppet has eaten makeup wipes and elastic bands before!) Our all-time favourite past time is to sleep on and leave our hair all over our ma’s clean clothes and bed. We both have very different purrsonalities, but we both agree being a blood donor makes us superheroes! We are on call 24/7 to be able to race in and help save the life of a sick cat in need of some precious blood. While it is a little scary to have lots of people poking and prodding you, we both know how important it is to have healthy cats just like us ready to donate at any time. We know our ma would appreciate blood donors if we ever got sick, so we decided to be brave and sign up to be super heroes! If you are a healthy cat who is between the ages of 1 and 8 years old, are over 4kg, up to date with your vaccinations and live indoors please contact Animal Emergency Centre Midland on our Facebook page or email [email protected] to express interest or to get some more information. You will be treated with a $50 PetBarn voucher when you donate blood and the love, cuddles and snacks you will receive from the nurses and doctors will make it all worth while! We are told they need more cats like us to help save lives! Love, Poppet and Gremlin

10.01.2022 Meet Sasha - one of our pawsome patients, pictured here at her post-op checkup! Sasha came to us with a very sore tummy, not feeling herself and not wanting to eat. After some diagnostic tests, including X-Rays, it was determined that she had what we call a "foreign body" - something stuck in her gastrointestinal tract that shouldn't be there. She had life-saving surgery with our AEC team to retrieve the object, and was on her way to feeling better almost immediately!

08.01.2022 Poppy was in to see the AEC team with a sore foot, but was happy to help out while she waited. Here she is helping nurse Jess set up some IV fluids!

08.01.2022 Today is World Animal Day. The mission is to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals. It's celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or political ideology. Through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare.

08.01.2022 Superhero Alert!! Animal Emergency Centre Midland are looking for dog and cat superheroes to join the ranks and save lives just like Rio by donating blood! Donors must have a calm disposition, be fully vaccinated and healthy, and must be at least 25kg (dogs) or 4kg (cats). Everybody meet Rio, a very handsome 5 year old Labrador X who was adopted by his family from Retriever Rescue in October 2015. He had a rough start to life and was initially very anxious and fearful of men,... however with the love and support of his family he eventually found his feet, slowly gaining his confidence to become the farm dog he is today! He loves nothing more than his farm friends and has been known to sneak chicken food, eating too much in one sitting and feeling sorry for himself. Rio has helped raise two calves, three lambs and one joey and he takes his big brother duties very seriously. He loves all animals and has many, many toys which he will happily share with anyone. He will ALWAYS greet you with something in his mouth, so you need to be careful what is left laying around or the next person who visits may be greeted with a pair of undies! Rio is extremely loyal and loveable. He loves camping and car rides and spending time with his humans. Rio loves being able to help, so becoming a blood donor was the perfect job for him Please get in touch via our facebook page or email [email protected] if you think your pet might be eligible to be a blood donor. You will be rewarded with a $50 Petbarn voucher if your pet becomes a blood donor!

07.01.2022 Any donations would be warmly welcomed by our furry friends

05.01.2022 Say hello to Dougie, a dashingly handsome Golden Retriever who has recently donated his precious blood to help save lives! Dougie loves to spend time outdoors where you’ll often find him enjoying one his favourite activities- swimming! He also enjoys walks with his humans and doggie sister. While Dougie loves being adventurous, spending time digging in the garden and barking at his neighbour dog, he also enjoys spending a portion of the day napping in luxury. Dougie also enjo...ys howling at emergency vehicles whenever they drive past his house. Perhaps he is really telling all you other pooches out there to contact Animal Emergency Centre Midland and enquire about becoming a doggie life saver like him? Blood donors must have a calm disposition, be fully vaccinated and healthy, and must be at least 25kg (dogs) or 4kg (cats). If you have a pet that meets those criteria and you think could be a superhero like Dougie, please get in touch with Animal Emergency Centre Midland via our facebook page or email [email protected]. You will be rewarded with a $50 Petbarn voucher if your pet becomes a blood donor!

01.01.2022 Olympus came to us from one of our referral vets - she had given birth to 4 pups, but was having trouble delivering the remaining pups that could be seen on the X-Ray. She was rushed to Animal Emergency Centre where we began an emergency caesarean section. Olympus lived up to her name with the mountain of effort she has given! She recovered so quickly and her puppies started to latch on right away. Her puppies are now nearly 2 weeks old - how many can you see in the last picture?
