25.01.2022 At #AEIOUBrighton, weve been learning all about the different parts of our bodies. In some ways, we are the same: we all have two eyes, one nose and a mouth. But, as the children discovered, our faces can be very different as well! Eyes can be blue, green or brown. Noses can be big or small, pointy or round like a button. Mouths turn down when we frown and up when we smile. After a group discussion about the features on our faces, the children created their own faces... out of paper plates, patty pans and cotton wool. What colour are your eyes? Is your nose big or small? We hope your mouth is curved into a happy smile!
25.01.2022 Today, we learned about National Reconciliation Week and its significance in Australia's history and future. We learned specifically about the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of the Land on which our #AEIOUBrighton centre is built, and Darcy shared with us what he'd learned about our First Nations peoples from Kindy. We talked about the Aboriginal flag and the meanings behind each colour: black for the Aboriginal people of Australia, yellow for the ever-giving sun, and red for the Australian earth which holds such a deep spiritual connection in Aboriginal Australian culture. To acknowledge the Kaurna people, we created artworks in the Aboriginal flag's colours: paintings of the flag, dot paintings inspired by Australian Aboriginal art, and handprints of the flag.
23.01.2022 Its a big yes please to highly interactive, brightly coloured toys from our kiddos! Our #AEIOUSippyDowns Activity Centre supports our childrens play skills, and helps develop fine motor skills and attention skills. Who knew learning could be this fun!? We dare say that learning also gets a big yes please from our children when its as fun as this activity centre is!
23.01.2022 After Queenslands scary start to the bushfire season, the children at #AEIOUSippyDowns began wondering about the native wildlife. What about all the animals in the forest? What happens to them when theres a fire? Are they hurt? We invited Wilvos to the centre to talk about their work rescuing our native animals. We also talked about what we can do to help in the rescue, as well as how to stay safe around some of our more dangerous native creatures (like snakes). Tha...nk you to Roslyn from Wilvos for helping us learn about our wild environment and how to take care of the animals who live there! And for our Sunshine Coast residents, remember: if you find an injured animal, call Wilvos on (07) 5441 6200.
22.01.2022 Meet Millhouse, the green tree frog, Brightons resident pet green tree frog The children were very excited to hear that Educator Shellie had invited a special visitor to the centre: she had brought in her pet green tree frog for show and tell with the children. We discussed with the children what Millhouse needs to live, including the food he eats, what he needs in his house and how to touch him (after rinsing and with moist hands). Some of the children were a little bit wary to touch Millhouse; those who did touch our little green friend were fascinated to find out that this amphibians sensitive skin was very warm. What a great way to start our terms focus on animals!
22.01.2022 This winter, the early learners at #AEIOUBrighton have been having fun learning about arctic animals: polar bears, seals, penguins... This crafty activity saw the children creating penguins from different shapes: small orange hearts, big white hearts, large dark blue ovals and HUUUUGE googly eyes We love getting crafty, especially when we get to learn about the world at the same time
20.01.2022 Little Rishi is new to our #AEIOUSippyDowns Pre-Kindy Room this year, and we felt very special to be able to share Rishis birthday celebrations as his new friends. (Rishis friend Louisa knows how this works - why are people telling her not to blow out the candles on Rishis cake!?)
19.01.2022 The children in the Kindergarten Room at #AEIOUSippyDowns are developing their awareness of road rules. Here, two of our little friends are practising these new road rules in their play, making sure that the people toys cross the road safely while the cars wait for the pedestrians to cross before continuing their drive. What have we learned? 1. Cars should wait for people to cross at a pedestrian crossing. 2. Its important to hold an adults hand while crossing the road.... 3. Before you cross the road, look left, look right, and look left again to check for cars. See more
18.01.2022 This term at #AEIOUBrighton, the children in the Turtle Room are journeying back to prehistoric times Little Darcy gave us the idea to turn our classroom into a land of dinosaurs. The children have been busy adventuring and creating since, collaborating to craft an erupting volcano and a collage of dinosaur footprints
18.01.2022 Today at #AEIOUBrighton, we learned about the importance of brushing our teeth thoroughly and regularly. We all need to look after our teeth, but how do we do that? 1. Use toothpaste on your toothbrush. 2. Brush in little circles to clean the top, front and back sides of each tooth. 3. Time yourself by reciting the alphabet in your head twice: "A, B, C, D, E, F, G..."... We practised brushing our teeth by using a toothbrush to clean some big, dirty paper teeth. Indie loved brushing her paper teeth and brushed all the plaque off!
17.01.2022 Last Friday (25 October) was Day for Daniel This is such an important day for the Sunshine Coast community. Daniel Morcombe and his siblings attended the Sienna Catholic School next door to us at the centre, so the everyone at #AEIOUSippyDowns was encouraged to wear red for Daniel. The children explored creative activities throughout the day, and some of the older children discussed some of the important skills they need to learn for their safety.... We thought wed share the 3 Rs with you to help you keep safe: - Recognise: are you safe? - React: what can you do? - Report: who can you tell? #DayForDaniel
17.01.2022 These times are indeed stranger than weve seen... At #AEIOUSippyDowns, the Kindergarten childrens thumbs are turning green! The children were visited by Mandy from our local Bunnings Warehouse Australia who helped us to create a new garden in the yard. AEIOUs Miss Sam and Miss Mel provided soil, flowers and vegetable seedlings and, together, we were able to plant a beautiful flower garden The plants will grow into a Hungry Caterpillar at some stage... Not bad for ...budding landscape designers! Thank you to Bunnings, who kindly gifted the children with some play resources for the centre and some toys for the children to take home. The children will continue to explore and develop respect and care for their natural environment. We look forward to a continued relationship of learning and growth with Bunnings.
16.01.2022 Wow, look at how much #AEIOUBrightons lentils have grown The children were very curious to see how their lentils had grown, while they were tucked away growing for the last week. And what a happy surprise: most of the lentils had broken free of their soft cases and the sprouts had shot up and out of the cup... by at least three centimetres! In the group, we discussed what a plant needs in order to survive, like water and sun to help them grow. We also sorted the cups... in order of smallest lentil sprouts to tallest lentil sprouts, and recorded on paper things we noticed. What were the colours of the leaves and roots? Could we see any new shoots growing beneath the sprout canopy? Join us next time to compare, sort and track the growth of our lentils.
16.01.2022 Today in the land of the dinosaurs (a.k.a. #AEIOUBrighton), we pretended to be palaeontologists and got to dig up some dinosaur bones We took turns carefully using different tools to very carefully and slowly brush away the dirt. Were looking forward to lots of fun as the excavation efforts continue!
16.01.2022 It's Easter this long weekend, and we heard a whisper that the Easter Bunny has been deemed an essential worker and has a special eggs-emption for unrestricted passage through all state borders Please note our centres and AEIOU Central Office will be closed on the Good Friday (10 April) and Easter Monday (13 April) public holidays. Our awesome teams will enjoy a well-deserved break at home and will see you back in the centres on Tuesday.
16.01.2022 How do we talk to our children about COVID-19? Its pretty hard to not hear or see or read the latest news about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) affecting our communities. Your child may have questions about what it is and what can be done to protect themselves or help others. Here are some tips from our educators on how to adjust to this new normal we have found ourselves a part of:... Limit news coverage, but feel free to watch some news with your child so you can explain things to them, reassure them they are safe, and answer questions. Take some extra moments each day to play, read a book or just be with your child. While they are winding down, they might even ask you some questions or share any worries they might have. While youre likely experiencing some changes in your own home environment (like parents working from home, or older siblings doing classwork from home), try to keep your routine as consistent as possible. Consistent routines help children feel safe and secure, particularly in a changing world. Have conversations with your child about how we can keep ourselves, our friends and family safe, by making sure we Wash our hands very well, paying attention to front and back, in between fingers, thumb too... You might even like to sing a song while you wash! Wash your hands very often - like after going to the shops, when you arrive at the AEIOU centre and when you get home. Be like Superman and catch a sneeze in your elbow. Throw dirty tissues in the bin. Most of all, remember that community is more important than ever! Lean into your support networks. Together, we can keep our community strong--even if it is by staying (1.5m) apart.
15.01.2022 Welcome to #AEIOUBrightons very own Vet Clinic! With a few cardboard boxes and a sprinkle of imagination, Billie and Darcy helped Teacher Connie turn the centres Home Corner into a specialist hospital for animals everywhere Connie, Billie and Darcy talked about going to the vet with their dogs and what this might look like. Each box is a special room for each animal to rest up in after being fixed at the vet, full of healthy food to help with their recovery. At th...e AEIOU Brighton Veterinary Clinic, we even have a reception area included a phone and cash register, a note pad for phone messages and a sign-in sheet for our patients. Billie and Darcy took turns role-playing who was the vet and who was the receptionist, coordinating each surgery to the vet. It sounds like these two make a great team! We cant wait to see the Billie & Darcy Veterinary Clinic in bricks and mortar one day!
14.01.2022 Its time for our morning circle! Each morning at #AEIOUSippyDowns, we gather in the classroom to discuss our plans for the day ahead. What a great opportunity for our little people to interact with each other and our educators as the first step of the day, promoting communication skills and social awareness.
13.01.2022 Back in the prehistoric times at #AEIOUBrighton, we have two new dinosaur friends in the Turtle Room: Ted the Tyrannosaurus Rex and a dinosaur egg... that we hatched ourselves! Every day this week, we checked on the dinosaur egg. Today, the dinosaur finally cracked through! Together, we took turns carefully removing the excess egg shell from his body and took him out to touch his skin. The children were surprised at how the dinosaurs skin felt and how the egg shell felt! So, meet Spike the Triceratops Did you know that Spike was from a group of dinos called certopians, that lived in the Cretaceous period and only ate plants?
13.01.2022 Once upon a time, in the land of Early Learning Childcare, #BookWeek was celebrated by AEIOU children everywhere. Dressed up as characters from their favourite books, The staff and children got lots of looks! Little Emma was none other than the famous Emma Wiggle,... And her brother James as Woody made all the children giggle. Reading is my super power was this years theme, So we crafted superhero masks and put a stop to literary bad guys schemes! Books are important and reading is fun; Lets celebrate developing speech, language and literacy skills in everyone! When you were a child, which story helped you grow? Share your favourite book with us below!
12.01.2022 Happy 2020 - a new year and a new decade! At #AEIOUSippyDowns, the kids in our Kindergarten Room celebrated their graduation. What a lovely night it was: the children did some performances and offered roses to their parents before the big ceremony. Each child received a graduation certificate, a special graduation balloon, a cup of lollies (!) and a cupcake. Perhaps what was most special of all was the graduation photo each child received, accompanied by handwritten notes... from every teacher in the centre who had cared for them during their time at AEIOU. Then the children presented flowers to their educators to say thank you! Were looking forward to all the opportunities that this year will bring the children as they develop, and are excited to welcome new little people, who will join our service for the first time this week
12.01.2022 One of our scaly friends, Ted the Tyrannosaurus Rex, has been adventuring with a new family from #AEIOUBrightons Turtle Room each week When Ted goes home with a child for the week, the family will record all the adventures he has while he stays with them in a special book. One of the childrens favourite activities each week is reading about all the adventures Ted the Tyrannosaurus Rex has with the families!
12.01.2022 Where do I live? The children in the Kindergarten Room at #AEIOUSippyDowns are exploring their sense of belonging, their place, their home. We looked at local maps together, and the children were able to share with their friends where their home suburb was on the map. We then explored our suburbs visually through Google Maps Street View. Looking at our state and our country was fascinating. Australia is so big that some areas can look very different from other areas! In Queensland alone, we have rainforests and frogs, suburbs and dogs, big lakes... even dry bushland and snakes!
10.01.2022 Summer has come early this year, and we are keeping cool in our outdoor play! At #AEIOUSippyDowns, the children enjoyed an afternoon of splashing in the paddling pool, spritzing each other with spray bottles, sliding down the water slide and running around in the sprinklers. Look at Kiyan who sprayed his brother Niyam... Dont worry - Niyam ran after his older brother and got Kiyan back! Heres hoping for some rain to cool us all down!
10.01.2022 #AEIOUSippyDowns hosted all their families for their centres Childrens Christmas Party. Santa visited and gave all the children a present (a book!) from within a very special Christmas Grotto. The Motor Room was fit for a party with lights, music and balloons, and the outdoor area boasted a host of activities, including face painting, collaging, playdough creating and an afternoon tea spread for all to enjoy.... Congratulations to Spencer from our Preschool Room, Jills (AEIOU staff) granddaughter Summer won another and Sandie, from the Sunshine Coast University, who all won bicycles in the Christmas Raffle and are on a roll into the new year! Merry Christmas to all and, to all, a good night!
09.01.2022 "The foot bones connected to the leg bone. The leg bones connected to the knee bone..." Today at #AEIOUBrighton, one of the children shared a story about her friend, who was very sore and upset because she had broken a bone. From there, we talked as a group about bones and skeletons. The children cut out their skeleton and pieced together the bones in the correct order. Nice work! "Them bones, them bones, them dancing bones... Doing the skeleton dance!"
07.01.2022 Were playing with playdough at #AEIOUSippyDowns today! Playdough is a great way to support your childs creativity and storytelling skills. Actively engaging your hands with playdough also promotes fine motor skills, which are important in a childs development!
06.01.2022 We had a visit from Bunnings Warehouse this month to help our #AEIOUSippyDowns Kindy Room with tending the gardens. A big thank you to Mandy and the team from Bunnings Warehouse at Kawana, who generously donated: - three bags of soil - herb, vegetable and flower seedlings ... - compost - gardening tools - a worm farm - their time to help set the garden up! The children (or Junior Tradies, as Bunnings called them) were able to work together with their educators and Bunnings staff to plant the seedlings and set up the worm farm. What an exciting and hands-on way to be learning about caring for the environment, what worms do in the ground and what scraps to collect to feed our wriggly friends.
06.01.2022 Its Easter this long weekend, and we heard a whisper that the Easter Bunny has been deemed an essential worker and has a special eggs-emption for unrestricted passage through all state borders Please note our centres and AEIOU Central Office will be closed on the Good Friday (10 April) and Easter Monday (13 April) public holidays. Our awesome teams will enjoy a well-deserved break at home and will see you back in the centres on Tuesday.
06.01.2022 Today, Lavina and London from #AEIOUBrighton tried their hand at juicing their own oranges and making their own orange juice The kids used all their muscles to squeeze the juice from the orange half and into the juicer - they found out that it was hard work! After hard work, theres nothing more refreshing than a glass of orange juice - even better if its squeezed freshly!
06.01.2022 Today, we learned about National Reconciliation Week and its significance in Australias history and future. We learned specifically about the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of the Land on which our #AEIOUBrighton centre is built, and Darcy shared with us what hed learned about our First Nations peoples from Kindy. 05.01.2022 On Monday last week, we celebrated National Grandparents Day at #AEIOUSippyDowns The childrens grandparents were invited to join in for our morning playtime. Lets be honest: grandparents rock! For many families, grandparents play an important role in our kids lives and helping us out day to day. A massive THANK YOU to all the grandies in our lives. Today, were calling on all the grandparents to celebrate the special bond they have with their grandchildren. If youre a grandparent, wed love you to share what makes your grandson or granddaughter so awesome!
04.01.2022 The children at #AEIOUBrighton are exploring how from little things, big things grow! So, how do you grow lentil sprouts? The children sprinkled the brown lentils on top of some cotton wool and poured water into each cup, until the water soaked into each piece of cotton wool. They should begin to sprout some green shoots in the next few days. Well keep you updated!
04.01.2022 A very merry holiday season to our extended AEIOU family. Wherever or however you are celebrating, may your holidays be filled with loved ones, happiness and laughter. Well see you back at our centres in 2020!
04.01.2022 Every morning at #AEIOUSippyDowns, the children come together on the mat to give thanks to the earth, sky, each other and themselves For National Reconciliation Week, the children learned about the traditional owners of the land where we meet, the Gubbi Gubbi peoples. This week, along with thanking the earth, sky and each other, we thanked the Gubbi Gubbi mob and greeted each other in their language: nara. We discovered the symbols the Gubbi Gubbi peoples used in their traditional art and what these symbols represent: tools, animals and people. We enjoyed painting in the style of traditional Australian Aboriginal dot art to celebrate the Gubbi Gubbi people.
04.01.2022 As part of the children in the #AEIOUBrighton Turtle Rooms new project focus on the human body, we explored what our bodies look like. A tracing activity for the children in the outdoor area was a huge hit... even staff joined in on the fun! What a great opportunity for children to visually make comparisons with each others body, such as the length of legs and arms and the different shapes and heights of the staff and children.
03.01.2022 Welcome to #AEIOUBrighton's very own Vet Clinic!
