10.01.2022 Very interesting that Sunshine Coast Council and Sunshine Coast Airport PTY LTD planned to rip up the community owned and funded North/ South Runway known as 18.../36 valued at $200million misleading the public by saying cross runways are unsafe Cross runways are operating World Wide safely everyday, All Australian major runways operate with a cross runway for safety redundancy. If safety was an issue do you think the busy airports like Sydney and Melbourne would continue this?????? Yet 400 miles up the road in Mackay they have realised the opportunities and are set to recommission their second runway to cater for growth and diversification for the aviation industry. Story THE Mackay Airport will be propelled into the future as it ticks off a long list of developments designed to help future-proof aviation in the region. The new home of Qantas's next pilot academy, the airport has a lot to look forward to. But even before the academy was announced, the airport had a number of major upgrade plans ready to take off. From runway resurfacing, upgrades to aviation parking surfaces, recommission of the cross runway and a terminal redesign, the airport is gearing up to heavily invest in its future. General manager Garry Porter said the Qantas Academy was just one piece of a bigger puzzle. "If you have a look at the region right now, there is opportunity and growth," he said. "We're spending a lot of money on capital to make sure we've got the infrastructure right to allow further development and showcase the airport as we're open for business. "We're upgrading out taxiways, our runways, making them all-weather, all-capable and all-hours and making them the top standards so we can encourage more general aviation, more private jets through there, so when they get here the facilitation is top notch. "So one, we can lift tourism, two encourage businesses to fly in and do business with us." Mr Porter said having the key infrastructure ready and raring to go was an important step for the airport. "It means knowing that we don't have a manned tower 24 hours a day, any pilot that wants to come in here has got the best facilities to come in here in any weather conditions." Mr Porter said the Mackay Airport was one of the key pillars in the region. "In terms of access to goods and services in a timely manner, apart from the rail and the road, we need to make sure we've got the right facilities to make sure business can thrive. "Knowing there is an upward trend in Mackay, we need to be on the front foot to make sure we don't slow that down. "We're talking to multiple stake holders, a lot of the local community groups, we will activate land or opportunity as it arises. No longer are we going to sit on our hands, we're going to be out there and helping the community." Qantas Academy WITH expansion and redevelopment plans already under way, the Qantas Academy was just one more positive for the airport to look forward to. "We were already prepared, we had a land use plan that came out four or five years ago around an aviation development area," Mr Porter said. "That plan hasn't changed, but it's actually brought it forward. "The make-up and the plan were done, it's now about activating. "We're working with Qantas and the other stakeholders to get that up and running." Mr Porter said they were mindful the Toowoomba academy would not begin till the end of September. "Qantas' focus is getting Toowoomba up and running, we will go and have a look and look at the best things, and get the opportunities coming through," he said. Tourism THE Mackay Airport plays an integral role in the region's tourism. Mr Porter said one of his focuses with tourism was transferring the "drive market" into the "flight market". "Mackay has always had a really good drive market, in terms of people coming through in caravans and holidaying," he said. "How do we then use the airport to foster growth and that is all coming together to make sure we're all aligned, whether it is events, activation or key infrastructure?" With the airport, Mackay Regional Council and the State Government on the same page about this drive for tourism, Mr Porter said they could go back to the airlines as a collective to entice them to bring more services. "We'd be silly not to (look at more flights from capital cities)," he said. "There a decline in the Australian market as a whole right now, so it is challenging to get airlines to commit to new routes. "We believe we're one of the strongest airports performing in Queensland right now." Upgrades A MAJOR security change in most airports across the country has spurred a terminal redesign for the Mackay Airport. "If we're going to make some major changes regarding some of the security screening processes, then let's look at the terminal," Mr Porter said. "We're looking at putting in automated check-in, like the major capital cities. "We're about to upgrade our news and gifts store, there will be a major refit of that later this year or early next year and focus on local products." The decommissioned cross-runway on Milton St is set to be revitalised too. "There are changes to the regulations later next year which will improve safety for airports," Mr Porter said. "We will go through the process to get it recommissioned as part of that. "It may not be an active runway, but it will be recommissioned. There is a massive investment, but it's making sure we don't fall behind when it comes to regulation changes and having infrastructure ready to go. "We're in a strong position ... which allows us to spend the money and be ready for any opportunity." It is understood it would cost about $1m to reopen the cross-runway. #sunshinecoastcouncil #palisades #palisadeinvestmentpartners #sunshinecoastairport #news
