25.01.2022 How to Travel Well.... A group of travel doctors have produced a YouTube video that may help. Filmed in southeast Queensland, the film takes you through a series of disease scenarios such as malaria, yellow fever, rabies, cholera, typhoid, meningitis and travellers diarrhoea.... The Travel Medicine Alliance is a network of specially trained travel doctors from over 30 clinics across Australia. Dr Deb Mills from the Alliance said We wanted to do something different, and take a light-hearted approach to a serious subject. We hope that this will encourage more travellers to do the right thing and protect themselves and their families from preventable travel illness. Have a peek for yourself - it is a good reminder on how to minimise health risks that we might not think about... http://youtu.be/u6oRXMW72iw
25.01.2022 Make sure your tank is full before you head off this Christmas: Five Jamaicans lost in the Caribbean for three weeks have been rescued by the Island Princess. The castaways said they were on their way to a barbecue and ran out of fuel.
23.01.2022 A Brit with an off-centre sense of humour has produced a site that maps all the places around the world that feature suggestive and even downright rude names, like Spanker Knob in Victoria and Koolyanobbing in WA. The Vaguely Rude Place Names of the World is a time-wasters delight, detailing places like Iron Knob, SA, Bumbang and Tittybong in Victoria and Rooty Hill in NSW all getting a guernsey. Australia cant take all the credit however, as there are some absolute crackers to be found worldwide, including Wet Beaver Creek in Arizona and Slut in Vasterbotten, Sweden. :)
22.01.2022 Travellers ugly fashions exposed The UK Telegraph has reported the results of a recent poll by a British discount shopping site that aimed to uncover what its customers regard as the most unforgivable holiday fashions. Apparently there are some things that should just never be seen when youre travelling and, not surprisingly, HisnHers matching outfits get the big thumbs down.

20.01.2022 Staff at tourist attraction, Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset, found a ewe and two lambs hiding out in the storeroom and the chocolate-covered woolly-coated evidence of their consumption of several thousand Easter eggs. General manager Daniel Medley said: The eggs were delivered at the weekend [for an Easter Egg competition] and somehow this ewe and her lambs got out of their usual accommodation and made their way in there. We think it was a bit warmer in there or maybe the sm...ell of the chocolate attracted them. It was pretty clear from the chocolate stuck to their wool who was responsible. They are so cute that we couldnt be too angry with them. We may get them to stand in the naughty corner over the weekend as a punishment. I hope your Easter is as good as theirs but warmer!

19.01.2022 Which countries have a reciprocal health agreement for Australian travellers? A Sydney couple was shocked to discover that the hospital bill for the birth of their baby, Piper, born prematurely in Canada at 26 weeks, was almost $1 million and that travel insurance did not cover the labour or Pipers hospital care. Had she been born in Slovenia or the United Kingdom we would have been covered, new mum, Rachel Evans said.... Pipers parents experience has highlighted the issues of adequate health cover when Australians travel overseas with many travel insurance policies leaving people substantially out of pocket, not only in countries with whom Australia does not have a reciprocal health agreement. A Department of Health and Ageing spokesman said agreements were negotiated with countries with a health system of a similar standard to Australias, and where a roughly equal numbers of visitors travel between Australia and the partner country. Entitlements usually include access to public hospital treatment, out-of-hospital consultations and pharmaceuticals, on the same terms as apply to residents of that country, he said. Depending on the country, certain types of treatment are free but in some cases treatment is subsidised and will involve patient co-payments. Countries with a reciprocal health agreement with Australia New Zealand United Kingdom Republic of Ireland Sweden The Netherlands Finland Italy Belgium Malta Slovenia Norway Some of the countries without a reciprocal health agreement with Australia Canada United States Fiji Indonesia Thailand China Singapore Hong Kong Japan Germany

14.01.2022 Whingeing trip reviewers . who? not us! We might be a nation of sometime whingeing travellers but were certainly not a nation of frequent whingeing travellers when compared to the rest of the world, according to new statistics from the Future of Travel study released by Expedia and Egencia. 8535 adults in 24 countries were surveyed about their online comments and it seems that Aussies like to read what others say online but are neither prolific contributors or fans of the ...negative comment. The results revealed that only 21 per cent of Aussies have posted negatively in the last year about a travel experience compared with a global average of 33 per cent. While we like to use trip reviews to help plan and book our travel, we dont tend to share our own experiences, particularly negative, in online travel reviews as much as other nationalities. Travellers from India, Brazil, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Mexico are most likely to post a negative review.
14.01.2022 Do you still send postcards? I do! Forget postcards as most of us know by now, social media has replaced the postcard as the most popular way for travellers to communicate with family and friends back home. In fact, Facebook is regularly used by 59% of travellers and is the most popular social medium with only 3% still putting pen to paper to send a traditional postcard. Surprisingly, the Topdeck Travel survey, which studied more than 1300 travellers aged 18 to 39, found th...e humble postcard still trumps Twitter and Instagram for staying in touch with just 1% of respondents posting updates while abroad. Twenty-four per cent kept near-and-dear up to date with an email while 11 per cent made a phone call or sent a text. The survey also found a majority 62 per cent of people said they logged on every other day to check their Facebook account while travelling. Almost a quarter (24 per cent) logged on once a day, 5 per cent admitted they checked every few hours while 7 per cent said they couldnt be bothered because they were on holidays. Only 2 per cent of young travellers didnt have a Facebook account. The most popular reason young people used Facebook while travelling was to send private messages or post on friends walls, followed by status updates, photo uploads and to check-in their location. Facebook is a great way to stay in touch because its instant, wide-reaching and the ultimate bragging tool to show off your great adventures. But the survey found staying connected wasnt always the highest priority. When asked what the one thing they would never travel without was, 44 per cent said plenty of clean undies. (!!) That was followed by mobile phones, iPads or laptops (34 per cent); a guidebook (13 per cent); deck of cards (7 per cent); and Swiss army knife (2 per cent).
13.01.2022 Most of us have left something behind on a plane, usually something like glasses, headphones or a book. Well, an international survey of 700 cabin crew by travel search site Skyscanner has shown that people leave far stranger things behind, like a parrot, glass eyes and prosthetic legs. And if you think flying with and forgetting! a parrot is weird, crew members have also found a falcon, frog and tortoise. Dentures, underwear, a bag of sand, and handcuffs also made the l...ong list of weird and wonderful items found by cabin crew, along with a single egg without packaging, a written marriage proposal and an unclaimed wedding dress. Oh, and a bag of diamonds who could forget that?! Almost a quarter (24%) of the crew have found a lost passport on board, which actually outweighed the number of lost phones (23%) and books (21%) also left behind.

12.01.2022 Protect yourself and your clients from pickpockets We all know that pickpockets are rife in tourist areas and we all know the basics of taking care, however SureSave travel insurance claims that statistics indicate certain patterns to pickpockets behaviour. For example, 60-70 year olds and 18-25 year olds are statistically the most likely age groups to be pickpocketed. This is because they are typically the most vulnerable and represent different, yet equally enticing oppor...tunities for thieves. The younger people are targeted for their iPhones and iPods, while the older travellers are targeted for passports and wallets. Both these groups also carry credit cards, which are of particular value to these criminals, said Michael McAuliffe, SureSave executive director. The most common places to be wary of pickpockets are generally on or near public transport and in markets and shopping centres. The higher concentration of people means it is easier for the thief to blend in to the crowd and escape. While pickpockets operate in every major city in the world, McAuliffe says Spain, France and Thailand are the destinations most commonly associated with pickpocketing, closely followed by Vietnam, Bali and Italy. Top tips to stay safe from pickpockets: Blend in: Spend the first couple of hours in a new country looking at what the locals use to carry their belongings, and go get one. While youre at it, look at how they dress, copy that and blend-in a little. This will make you stand out less to thieves. Approach with caution: Like the crooks in Dickens Oliver Twist, pickpockets almost never work alone. One captures your attention while the other rifles through your bag. It might seem rude, but politely challenge overly friendly approaches from strangers. It may be cover for an accomplice to get his hands on your valuables. The genuinely friendly will understand and the thieves will skulk off to find an easier target. Stash your cash: Many travellers recommend not putting wallets in pockets ever. If you must carry large amount of cash, stash it in out of reach inside pockets. Belt up: As unstylish as they are, money belts can be a saviour, but still only carry enough cash for the day. Leave the majority of your money locked up back at the hotel with your passport. Rely on photocopies: If youre in a country that insists you carry ID, take a photocopy of your passport and some other photo ID, for example, a drivers licence. If the police insist on seeing the original, offer to take them to see it at your hotel. Although, beware some countries such as Japan insist that a photocopy is not good enough and you must carry the original, so make sure its stashed away safely. Ditch the bum-bag: When in a crowded place hold your bag or purse tightly in front of you. But remember, backpacks and bum-bags scream tourist and are prime targets for pickpockets.
11.01.2022 ACCC warning: travel scammers on the loose Thursday, 9 May 2013 Fraudulent online activity disrupting winter travel bookings. ... The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned travellers to beware of fraudulent charlatans when booking holidays. Scammers are posting fake online listing for rental properties to lure unsuspecting consumers into parting with their money, the ACCC reported. These tricksters are also allegedly hacking into popular rental and travel-related websites to access email inquiries sent by consumers, assuming the identity of a property owner and attempting to arrange bogus bookings. Already this year, the ACCC has received over 100 travel-related scam complaints with more than AU$250,000 reported lost, ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said. Our most commonly reported travel scam comes from holidaymakers finding that discount accommodation vouchers they paid for dont arrive, are fakes or simply cant be used as promised, Ms Rickard said. Yet another good reason to use a licenced travel agent... a real person you can talk to is always a joy!
07.01.2022 Thailands new free mobile phone app Tourist Buddy includes an emergency call button, a send location option, important phone numbers, and dos and donts about Thai culture. The Phuket Tourist Police have already promoted the app through an information booth at Patong Beach and by giving away information brochures. They plan on carrying out more promotion at Phuket International Airport and around the islands beaches. Already in Bangkok there have been cases of tourists r...eporting a robbery through Tourist Buddy and the police have been able to arrest the thief, Inspector Pol Maj Urumporn Koondejsumrit told The Phuket News. At the moment the app is only available for iPhones, but within one or two months it will be available for all smartphones, Maj Urumporn said.
06.01.2022 Downsizing plane toilets really! Most of us think that its squeezy enough already in aeroplane toilets, but the Daily Mail in the UK has reported that Delta Airlines has ordered new on-board toilets that will be smaller than the current 3ft by 3ft dimensions (0.9m by 0.9m). These little conveniences will be fitted later this year and will allow four extra economy seats on the 737-900 aircraft. Apparently passengers wont notice any reduction in size as the extra space w...ill be harvested from space behind the sink units, which is currently wasted. Just when you thought air travel couldnt get any more challenging

03.01.2022 What is your cure for jetlag? A new survey by Skyscanner has revealed the various techniques adopted by Australian travellers in the bid to combat jetlag. 94% of those surveyed said they had taken a long haul flight in the last year and on average it took them 2.3 days to recover from jetlag. 51% said that stretching and exercising on the plane had helped them deal with jetlag at their destination. The second most effective technique was ensuring that they ate a light diet of... healthy fresh food (34%), and third was setting their watch to the destination time and sleeping according to that time zone (26%). Tony Gherardin, national medical adviser at the Travel Doctor TMC (traveldoctor.com.au) said that eating well and staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol worked reasonably well to counter the effects of jetlag. In an ideal world, to prevent jetlag we should begin taking on the habits of destination time zone before we leave home. That is, eating at the same time and sleeping or resting at the same time as what you would be doing at that destination. Of course this isnt always possible at home or even while flying. Only 16% of travellers had tried using sleeping tablets and found that it helped. Gherardin said safe use of sleeping tablets or melatonin once youve reached your destination can also assist in getting your body in sync with the time zone. For me business class did the trick..... Most popular Which alleged cures for jetlag have you ever tried? 02.01.2022 Women miss their pets more than their partners - who would have thought! A recent Skyscanner survey shows that female dog owners miss their pets more than their partners, friends or family when they are away. Over 1000 dog owners were surveyed and it seems that while men would miss their partner the most if they were on holiday without them, with 37% putting them top, women dont return the favour. Only 21% of women polled said theyd miss their partner most with 37% putting... their favourite pooch first. And thats not all the survey also reveals the lengths that dog owners go to stay in touch with their pooch. How dog owners stay in touch with their pets on holiday Called or text to see how it is getting on 40% Spoken with their pet on the phone 14% Sent their pet a postcard 6% Added their pets name onto the postcard 5% Skype 5% Video link 2% Apparently many owners feel guilty about leaving their pets behind and 3% admitted to cutting their holiday short as they missed their dog so much. The survey also found that over half of holidaymakers plan breaks with their pets in mind, to ensure they arent left at home. One in five dedicated dog owners have never been away without them and 20% say they would prefer the company of any pet on holiday, more so than their own children and even their friends.

01.01.2022 Top translation apps These days, its getting easier to get around the world, as a smartphone in your pocket solves many of the problems that travellers used to face. One of those was not knowing the language but that has all changed, with a number of free or inexpensive apps available across all platforms. Here are some of the best Google Translate iOS, Android (free): Translate words and phrases between more than 60 languages; with most languages you can speak your phra...ses and hear corresponding translations. Lonely Planet Offline Translator iOS, Android (from $8.49): While the price may seem steep, the upside is that once downloaded, the app can be used without an internet connection, which could save you hundreds when overseas. Languages include German, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Japanese. Word Lens iOS, Android (free): While the app is free, the language packs are an in-app purchase, but once again, no internet connection is needed. Word Lens uses photos that you take with your smartphone camera as the basis for its translation. The language packs cost $5.49 each and cover Italian, French and Spanish. iTranslate Voice: iOS (99c): This could be the best dollar you ever spend before heading overseas and the app featured in the App Store Best of 2012 round up. All you have to do is speak into your phone and it immediately replies in one of 36 supported languages.

01.01.2022 If you have friends heading to Japan and they are hankering for sushi and sashimi, tell them that they might need a big bag of yen. A bluefin tuna sold for AUD $1.5 million at auction last weekend. The tuna, weighing 222kg, is expected to cost about $100 to $200 (for a portion as small as a jellybean) in some very up-market restaurants in Japan.... what is the most you have ever spent on something scrumptious?
