21.01.2022 Forbidden visit: Lun-class Ekranoplan Somebody travelled all the way to Daguestan to explore the inside of the only Lun class Ekranoplan ever built. The Lun Cla...ss was designed in the 1970s and entered service in the early 1980s. It was retired at some point in the late 1990s. The Lun would "fly" 4 metres above the water, using lift generated by the ground effect of its wings. It had a range of 1,900km and a top speed of 550kph. It was designed to be used as a transport vehicle and had a cargo capacity of 137 tons. The Lun was also equipped with 6 P-270 Moskit AshM. Ekranoplans are neither ships, nor planes. They are also different from hovercrafts or hydrofoils. In terms of how a Ground Effect Vehicle works, they are technically situated right between a hovercraft and a plane. Not touching the water means no water induced drag on the body of the vehicle. But not flying beyond a few meters above the ground means low lift-induced drag on its wings. The combination of both factors make Ekranoplans much faster than a ship but much more fuel efficient than a plane. The Lun required 15 crew members to be operated. There are plans to tow the Ekranoplan to a nearby city to display it in a "patriot park" type of outdoor museum. -RBM.

Today Britten-Norman custom designs each new aircraft to fit the operators needs, leading to many variations and innovations around how the aircraft is employed. So far there have been over 2,044 modifications to the aircraft, reflecting the wide range of roles the Islander is so well known for.
