17.01.2022 Ellie Marney Allen & Unwin, 1 Sep 2020 - Young Adult Fiction - 400 pages It's 1982, and the innovative FBI Behavioral Science section is breaking new ground. Emma Lewis and Travis Bell, two teenagers with valuable skills, are recruited to interview convicted juvenile killers for information on cold cases. When they're drawn into an active case targeting teenagers, everything starts to unravel. Over Travis's objections, Emma becomes the conduit between the FBI and an incarcera...ted serial killer, nineteen-year-old Simon Gutmunsson, who is a super-intelligent sociopath. And although Simon seems to be giving them the information they need to save lives, he's also an expert manipulator playing a very long game ... Can Emma and Travis stop a serial killer on the loose - or will they fall victim themselves? 'A YA Silence of the Lambs that blew me away with its daring premise, gripped me with its twists and turns, and kept me up all night until its stunning conclusion. Marney brings the serial killer thriller to YA with riveting suspense and sizzling style. Don't read this book in the dark!' - CS Pacat 'With its dark, intriguing premise, gripping suspense and riveting pace, None Shall Sleep is an exhilarating read.' - Fleur Ferris 'Utterly terrifying and impossible to put down.' - Lili Wilkinson 'Tightly written with whip-smart characters, None Shall Sleep pulled me in and didn't let go until the bone-chilling conclusion. A clever and compelling story that rattled me long after I put the book down. Fans of Mindhunter will love this.' - Sarah Epstein

16.01.2022 It never failed to surprise Odette how white people were always going on about uplifting Aboriginal people, yet they would demand information about the old ways when it suited them, reads an expert from Tony Birch’s award-winning novel, The White Girl, which tells the story of an Aboriginal woman who struggles to stop her family from being torn apart. #yourhappyspace #aesopsatticbookshop #aesopsattic #aesopsattickyneton #aesopsatticbookshopkyneton #bookshop #kynetonbookshop #kyneton #bookstore #bookstorekyneton #independentbookshop #familyowned #bookstagram #kynetonbookstore #kynetonvictoria #bookshops #bookshopping

16.01.2022 Posted @withregram @babblingbooks Do you read Historical Fiction? Do you have a favourite from the genre you can recommend? I have a difficult relationship with Historical Fiction. I rarely read it (only 10% of books read so far this year) and even less often do I love it. But some of my favourite books of all time are Historical Fiction (Burial Rites) or incorporate historical elements (Homegoing, Pachinko). So I'm not ready to abandon... the genre and dismiss it out right. I must say however that The Familars sadly fell into the disappointing category for me. Telling the story of real historical figures and the events surrounding the Pendle witch trials in 17th-century Lancashire, England. It used my most loathed Historical Fiction trope of a female protagonist with modern feminist values without any context for how she might have developed attitudes counter to her class and education. I'd much rather have read a whole book about the accused witches than the 'wealthy saviour' narrative of a 17 year old noblewoman. A quick look at the reviews online suggests I might be in the minority with this opinion, so I'd be curious to see if anyone else had a similar (or different) experience of it to me. See more

10.01.2022 https://aesopsattic.circlesoft.net/p/adult-fiction-dark-roo Dark Roots (Short Stories) Author(s): Cate Kennedy... Adult Fiction SHORTLISTED FOR 2007 PREMIER'S QUEENSLAND LITERARY AWARDS: AUSTRALIAN SHORT STORY COLLECTION OPRAH MAGAZINE 'NEW VOICE OF THE MONTH' In these sublimely sophisticated tales, Cate Kennedy opens up worlds of finely observed detail. Her stories are populated by people at tipping points in their lives -- moments that find them poised between a familiar past and an unfamiliar future. In 'The Testosterone Club', a neglected wife plans an unsavoury revenge on her boorish husband. In 'Resize', a married couple realise their too-tight wedding rings may symbolise wider aspects of their relationship. And in 'Cold Snap', a young boy senses that the newly arrived tree changer may have some sinister intents. Heartbreaking, evocative and richly comic, Dark Roots unveils the traumas that incite us to desperate measures, and the coincidences that drive our lives. PRAISE FOR CATE KENNEDY 'stunning ... Each story picks you up, takes you out of your life and smack bang into the middle of another place and time where the troubles and joys are laid bare and stripped back to their essence with incredibly spare and gifted writing. This collection is a joy to read...' The Sunday Age 'These are precisely observed pieces, deserving of a wide audience.' The Guardian

10.01.2022 Just Ignore Him Author(s): Alan Davies Biography... The story of a life built on sand. In the rain. In this compelling memoir, comedian and actor Alan Davies recalls his boyhood with vivid insight and devastating humour. Shifting between his 1970s upbringing and his life today, Davies moves poignantly from innocence to experience to the clarity of hindsight, always with a keen sense of the absurd. From sibling dynamics, to his voiceless, misunderstood progression through school, sexuality and humiliating 'accidents', Davies inhabits his younger mind with spectacular accuracy, sharply evoking an era when Green Shield Stamps, Bob-a-Job week and Whizzer & Chips loomed large, a bus fare was 2p - and children had little power in the face of adult motivation. Here, there are often exquisitely tender recollections of the mother he lost at six years old, of a bereaved family struggling to find its way, and the kicks and confusion of adolescence. Through even the joyous and innocent memories, the pain of Davies's lifelong grief and profound betrayal is unfiltered, searing and beautifully articulated. Just Ignore Him is not only an autobiography, it is a testament to a survivor's resilience and courage. $32.99(AUD)
