25.01.2022 AEU NT statement: "SAY NO TO A FOUR-YEAR PAY FREEZE" We were expecting an announcement in today’s budget that annual pay rises would be restricted to $1000 for the next four years, based on the recommendations of the Langoulant report. What we weren’t expecting was a PAY FREEZE for teachers and all other public sector workers for the next four years.... Instead of a wage increase, eligible public servants will receive an annual retention bonus of $1000. Current pay grades will not move one cent. In simple terms, if you’re a CT9, an ST1 or an A03, you will be on the same salary in 2025 as you are now. Over the next four years, our teachers will go from being the best paid in the country to among the worst. The pay freeze will jeopardise efforts to recruit and retain teaching staff, as other jurisdictions offer salary increases of up to 3% p/a. This harsh wage freeze was kept secret from the public and from the public servants who voted overwhelmingly to return Gunner to government. Now, with the election over, he has sprung this wage freeze on us. Our union will not lay down and accept a four-year wage freeze. We will mobilise our members in enterprise bargaining next year and fight for a fair and reasonable pay increase for Territory teachers, principals and educators. See more

21.01.2022 We're sorry to see the passionate and hard working Selena Uibo go from education but wish her very well in her new portfolios. Our Full-Time Officers are meeting with the new education minister Lauren Moss tomorrow and look forward to Minister Moss addressing delegates to our annual Conference this Friday.

20.01.2022 Alyson and Melody finished up their week in East Arnhem with visits to Shepherdson College and Maningrida over the past two days. The 'Learning Together' afternoon at Shepherdson was a highlight with Balanda staff learning about directions from Yolu. They enjoyed meeting Maningrida staff and chatting over morning tea! Welcome to all new members and, again, a huge thanks to the hosts - you went above and beyond. So it's back to town for the coming week with meetings planned for Darwin and PARR. Please contact the office if you would like to arrange a visit to your school.

19.01.2022 AEU members on Groote Eylandt say NO to Gunner's pay freeze! #fightthefreeze

19.01.2022 We've once again had media and the Opposition focusing on low attendance among remote students based on data from the Department of Education's latest annual report. The CLP is touting truancy officers as part of the answer. From the linked article: 'Education Union president Jarvis Ryan said truancy officers do not address the underlying issues impacting disengaged students. He said past experience has provided no evidence a punitive approach leads to higher rates of attenda...nce in schools. This was a significant reason why the Department of Education changed its focus from ‘attendance’ to ‘engagement’, he said. It is simplistic to think that all problems in schooling will be fixed simply by getting kids to school more often, when instead we should be looking at poor attendance rates as evidence that certain things are not working systemically that mean many students and their families are disengaging from schooling.' 19.01.2022 An ABC report into homelands education published today highlights how a lack of funding is sabotaging the rights of children attending school in outstations to adequate and equitable resourcing: 'An internal review of the Northern Territory's Aboriginal homelands schools has found funding inequalities and a lack of government support. The ABC has seen a copy of the draft report finalised in September last year and given to the NT Education Department. Photos in the report reveal the poor state of some homelands learning centre buildings and teacher accommodation in 2019 visiting teachers living in tents and students learning in rusted-out buildings. "There is a lack of clarity, support and accountability in relation to the provision of homeland education services," the report said.'

18.01.2022 2020 has been a challenging year for all of us, from environmental disasters to world-wide pandemics and now the rise of the COVID-19 second wave. The next difficulty will be how we can manage to maintain enough energy to see out the rest of the year. Dr Adam Fraser, with the support of Teachers Mutual Bank, is offering educators a free online workshop on Thursday 3 September to share evidence-based research and practical tangible methods to tap into "The Third Space" and help you develop "behavioural agility". TMB is offering exclusive free access for AEU NT members to this seminar but registration is essential. Message us or email [email protected] for details on how to register.

12.01.2022 Congratulations to AEU NT Executive member Dan Yore who was recognised as Secondary Teacher of the Year in the Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards 2020. Dan wrote eloquently last year about his experiences teaching at Yirrkala School and what we can all learn from adopting a "both ways" approach to Indigenous education: "For the past few years I have had the great privilege of working with the Yolu of East Arnhem Land in their community-led school in Yirrkala. The ex...perience, professionally and personally, has been nothing short of transformative. More than that I have come to quickly see that there are here sophisticated educational methodologies, born out of millennia of cumulative wisdom, that I believe hold some keys to unlocking the 21st century educational methods our global community is so desperately searching for." 11.01.2022 More than four in five teachers and principals in Australian public schools say NAPLAN has failed to improve student outcomes and raised stress and anxiety in the classroom. Seventy-five per cent said NAPLAN was not an effective measure of school performance or an effective way to compare schools. The AEU has reiterated calls for NAPLAN to be dumped.

08.01.2022 Members from across the Territory joined Women’s Officer Melody O’Meara for an inspiring day of panels and workshops at the AEU Federal Women’s Conference last Saturday October 9th. The day culminated in a powerful keynote address from ACTU Secretary, activist and feminist Sally McManus. The Zoom format meant that AEU NT members from a number of remote communities, Katherine, Alice Springs and Darwin had the opportunity to attend. The theme of the day was ‘Engaging AEU Women... in Campaigns.' Read more about it the upcoming edition of the Territory Educator and contact [email protected] to share your ideas for how we can further engage and empower each other. Here's what some of our women members said: I relished the opportunity to speak and listen to comrades. I gained confidence and shared some of my stories which I truly don’t believe I would have otherwise. I felt safe and respected. This was a most powerful day for me. It has impacted me not only as an educator but as a woman. I was blown away by the stories of women across the country who are working to support other women on a state and national level. I left feeling energised and wanting to create opportunities to talk and share with other women within my school (members and non-members) to increase engagement. Women need space to collaborate and talk about the issues they face. In smaller schools it can be difficult to speak up to these issues...it's vital for women to know that others have similar experiences and the Federal Women’s Conference provides that platform.

08.01.2022 We had a very busy weekend with our annual Conference - so busy we've only just had time to post some photos! It was a huge weekend with more than 100 matters debated by delegates. These pictures are from our reception on Friday evening. The highlight was the announcement that Vice-President Stephen Pelizzo has been nominated for AEU Life Membership for his 35 years of service to our union and public education in the Territory.

03.01.2022 Member Update: SCHOOL TERM DATES CONSULTATION The Minister for Education is responsible for determining the school calendar including the lengths of school terms and holiday breaks. School calendars are typically set at least two years in advance for a five-year period. To prepare a recommendation to the Minister, the Department is consulting the AEU and other stakeholders ahead of the gazetting of school dates for the years 2023-2027 (with a decision to be made by the end of... 2020). The AEU NT met with the Department yesterday. Consistent with Conference and Executive decisions, we advocated for the following three key outcomes: 1) Wherever feasible, the school year should be four terms of 10 weeks each (noting the Minister already approved a variation of dates for 2021 and 2022 to do this in response to feedback from teachers and principals). 2) That differentiated calendars for urban and remote schools be abolished. All schools should start and finish on the same day, in line with the current remote calendar. This would reduce confusion and remove the situation where in some years, urban teachers are required to commence on a Thursday or a Friday immediately preceding the Australia Day long weekend, meaning their working year is several days longer than their remote counterparts. 3) That the Department review the impact on staff, students and families of the change to a 1-3-2 school holiday structure since it commenced in 2018, with consideration given to returning to a 1-4-1 model of school holidays if this model is found not to be achieving its stated objectives. Wider consultation will take place once this phase is completed. The AEU NT advocated that the consultation this time follow a robust process and especially proper consultation with staff, unlike last time in which various proposals were voted on by the general public in an anonymous survey.
