24.01.2022 New Tweed Reef Designed For Multi Species Appeal! NSW’s newest offshore artificial reef will feature a specially designed 10m high fish grotto as well as inno...vative arrowhead reef modules boasting unique habitat features to attract and hold key sportfish including Spanish and spotted mackerel, cobia, kingfish, amberjack and samsonfish. DPI has awarded a contract for Pacific Marine Group to construct and install the new reef off Tweed Heads. The steel fish grotto is the reef’s centrepiece and will rise 10m from the seafloor. The grotto will be surrounded by 32 concrete arrowhead modules, each 5m tall and grouped in clusters. The new reef will be deployed 7.5km south-east of the Tweed Heads river entrance in about 25m of water. The centre point of 28 13.446 S, 153 35.508 E lies about 2.5kms off the coast of Wommin Bay. Following detailed stability assessments, the design phase is now complete with construction of the modules underway. Stay tuned for more info on the installation, which should take place in coming months. The grotto and various module clusters will be arranged to maximise upwelling of localised currents, meaning the reef system will have broad appeal to a range of target species including pelagic sportfish as well as mulloway, pearl perch, snapper and various bait species. The Tweed Reef will be the 8th purpose-built offshore artificial reef deployed off the NSW coast. Reefs already deployed include Sydney, Port Macquarie, the Shoalhaven, Port Hacking, Merimbula, Newcastle and Wollongong. See https://bit.ly/2XEIzJh for more details. The offshore artificial reefs program is another great example of your fishing fees at work!

02.01.2022 * UPDATE: Tomorrow, NSW Maritime staff will be flying in planes above the Central Coast to identify any additional shipping containers or large pieces of debris.... Contractors will also be inspecting local beaches and picking up anything that washes up. Five empty shipping containers from the APL England vessel have washed up on the Central Coast this morning. Authorities are currently working out how to remove the 40-foot containers from Birdie Beach near Norah Head. A further five containers were spotted out at sea off Terrigal today. Surgical masks have also washed ashore several local beaches in the past 24 hours. It comes after the cargo ship lost 40 shipping containers in giant ocean swells off Sydney on Sunday. NSW Maritime says these items are consistent with the ship’s cargo manifest. Beachgoers are being asked to report debris sightings to the NSW Maritime Info Line 13 12 36.
