10.01.2022 A one size fits all approach doesn’t work when battling HIV, nor will it in our fight against COVID 19. To beat this pandemic, there must be targeted support for our society’s most vulnerable. Our report (done in conjunction with our friends at Australian Council of Social Service) highlights why.

01.01.2022 HALC strongly condemns the Mandatory Disease Testing Bill 2020 introduced into the NSW parliament on the 11 November. The legislation would require mandatory te...sting of individuals whose bodily fluids come into contact with police and emergency service personnel. The legislation disregards the widely accepted evidence that testing without consent is contrary to public health outcomes and is inconsistent with state, national and international policies and guidelines. The current policies and procedures in place in New South Wales have seen no incidence of occupational transmission of HIV for emergency service personnel for 15 years. New South Wales should be proud of their world-leading HIV response which was guided by scientific evidence and ensuring an enabling environment for people living with HIV. The bill lacks any medical or judicial oversight and relies only on senior officers to determine if a mandatory HIV test is to be ordered. HALC believes that the introduction of this bill will only increase stigma and discrimination and spread misinformation about HIV and other Blood Borne Viruses.
