19.01.2022 This is a salutary lesson for any company that doesn't pay attention to their cyber-security. ASIC is making it clear that financial firms need to ensure that data of clients is protected. AFCA can assist in the development of cyber-security risk assessments, responses to cyber-breaches and proper forensically sound investigations to allow firms to meet their obligations. 18.01.2022 AFCA is pleased to announce the establishment of a new course, Electronic Forensics: First Responders Course. This course is designed to provide first responders in law enforcement or military personnel with the skills to acquire digital evidence in a forensically sound manner regardless of the conditions they find themselves in. They will gain a Certificate in Electronic Forensics: First Responder that will allow them to continue on to the Certificate IV in Electronic Forensics. This course is specifically designed for organisations that require electronic or digital forensics skills in its first responder workforce. 17.01.2022 I know it is easy to criticise, laugh or even make a snide comment. However, this report just shows how easy it is to lose control, even by the best of organisations. Take cyber-security seriously. https://apple.news/AM8yxqN6BSgin6cRUxFzDzA

16.01.2022 AFCA is pleased to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Saafah Foundation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This MOU will see AFCA support the Saafah Foundation provide training to commercial and government organisation in integrity and transparency. This agreement is an important step in the Saafah Foundation’s mission to raise awareness of transparency and integrity topics as well as support government and private sectors in implementing relevant frameworks, rules, and practices for enhancing transparency and integrity in their organizations. We look forward to working with the Saafah foundation as they pursue this important work.

15.01.2022 COVID-19 Phishing Alert In early May 2020, a NSW agency staff member received a COVID-19 themed phishing message via LinkedIn, seeking assistance for a Sydney government project. A PDF was attached to the message which contained a link to a OneDrive phishing page. The threat actor was then able to access the staff member’s LinkedIn account using credentials provided and sent further phishing messages to the staff member’s LinkedIn connections. While the incident occurred ...on a personal social networking site, threat actors will likely adapt and exploit current work from home arrangements to target staff using personal devices and networks with poorly configured security settings. Staff members who re-use credentials between personal and work accounts are particularly vulnerable in the event credentials are harvested in this manner. Given the unconventional use of LinkedIn as a threat vector, staff members may not exercise the same level of vigilance on social networking sites as they would with suspicious work emails. Malicious files shared via social networking platforms may also go undetected by threat scan applications. Remember: - Do not re-use personal passwords for work accounts - Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) - Maintain vigilance around information which may be publicly available on social networking platforms

10.01.2022 The Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has observed an ongoing and widespread campaign of malicious emails designed to spread Emotet across a variety of sectors in the Australian economy, including critical infrastructure providers and government agencies. Emotet provides an attacker with a foothold in a network from which additional attacks can be performed, often leading to further compromise through the deployment of ransomware. https://www.cyber.gov.au//advisory-2019-131a-emotet-malwar

07.01.2022 For all those small businesses out there, make sure you look closely at these guides from the Australian Cyber Security Centre. Make sure you implement proper cyber security at all times, it may save your business. https://www.cyber.gov.au//small-and-me/step-by-step-guides

06.01.2022 NO cheap shots in this, but when you don't have an up to date cyber security strategy, and there is a major deficiency in cyber-security and electronic forensic practitioners, then you get what you pay for in this arena. We need to get serious and train the right people in the right way. https://thenewdaily.com.au//australia-cyber-attack-warning/

06.01.2022 Just completed the successful delivery of countering violent extremism training in Dhaka to Bangladesh. This is one of the niche courses AFCA conducts on top of our normal suite of integrity and governance short courses. This course focusses on the use of social media and counter-narratives to counter radicalization efforts.

06.01.2022 A short article on the electronic forensics eco-system. Any feedback would be welcome.

05.01.2022 AFCA is please to announce the commencement of the first Certificate IV in Electronic Forensics. This course started on 2 January 2019, with eight members of the AFP as part of a eight month program. Good luck to our new students!

03.01.2022 To all our students and followers, as you are very much aware the current situation requires everyone to practice social distancing. What this means for the training community and our students is that we are unable to deliver face to face training. However, our regulator has provided advice that we can replace face to face training with online options. This is an avenue we are exploring and while this is being worked out, we ask that you be patient with us. We are hoping to ...have something available in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, make sure you follow the government's advice and stay safe.

02.01.2022 This short article raises an interesting question. The simple answer is that auditors should but can’t because we fail to train them on the red flags of fraud.

01.01.2022 AFCA has recently taken its training fully online. This has reduced the prices and opened the training to national and international students. Message us if you are interested or visit our website at ww.afca.edu.au
