24.01.2022 Vale Helen Reddy. AFF is saddened to hear of the loss of the legendary Australian singer, icon and feminist trailblazer. Reddy’s song I Am Woman inspired a generation of women to fight for change and is still a much loved anthem of formidable power and strength. AFF is proud to have supported the production of Unjoo Moon’s film I Am Woman that honours Reddy. Reddy’s inspiring story will always hold a special place in our hearts. I AM WOMAN helped reignite cinemas across Ad...elaide this year when the Australian Premiere of the film was presented in August. Hearing audiences singing Reddy’s song as they left the theatre was truly beautiful. AFF will continue to honour and remember Helen Reddy when I AM WOMAN returns to the big screen as part of the AFF program in October.

17.01.2022 What films are you most looking forward to from our Sounds Of Rebellion and Change The Status Quo strands? In our Sounds of Rebellion experience music from punk to power pop and on to grunge, the music of the last half century has risen against racism, given voice to the rise of feminism, and told countless young people that it’s alright to be who they wanna be. Our Change The Status Quo films prove that the world is changed one person at a time, and one film at a time. Here’...s a chance to be a part of that process. They confront the urgency of action on the environment, the need to maintain the feminist momentum of recent past and adapt it to the coming future, among other pressing issues. #AFF2020 #ADLFF

10.01.2022 Goodbye Marg Winterhalder The Adelaide Film Festival lost one of its great champions last week with the death of Marg Winterhalder, long-term financial manager of the festival. Marg was a truly remarkable woman and of all of her many talents and qualities it's her generosity and loyalty that stand out most for those of us who had the pleasure of working with her. ... Marg arrived in Adelaide from Perth as a single mother of two young children, Elizabeth (Frissy) and Sam. Lacking training qualifications, she enrolled at Regency Park TAFE and qualified with Honours in the Cooking Course. She went on to spend many years in a successful catering career. Hospitality, food and sharing food were among Marg's great passions, and over many years she made beautiful food which connected people and often made long working hours a lot easier for her colleagues. As a way of extending her catering career Marg became a qualified bookkeeper, and her exceptional financial skills led her to work for Arts Projects Australia and two of their projects, Womadelaide and (at the time) the Adelaide Film Festival. Marg worked for 14 years for AFF and every staff member found her kind, patient and endlessly willing to help. Marg could always be counted upon to put aside what she was doing and respond quickly to questions. She never seemed flustereda vital quality in a film festival officeand always had the right file and the important sets of figures, at her fingertips. She was an irreplaceable source of institutional and financial history for us. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Outside of work Marg helped run a Charity Shop and was a dedicated and talented painter. She had a long and loving partnership with Pete Spencer for 34 years and is survived by 3 grandchildren and many, many friends. Her family, friends and colleagues have lost a great and beautiful woman. She died peacefully on 11 Sept at Flinders Medical Centre with her family present.

09.01.2022 Still need help deciding what to see on your 3, 7 or 10 MultiPass? It'll be hard to find anyone more knowledgable on film than AFF’s program notes writer Mike Walsh. Here's his top picks: 2000 SONGS OF FARIDA - "Such beautiful and precisely constructed images! Each shot is intricately conceived and beautifully executed. https://adelaidefilmfestival.org/ev/2000-songs-of-farida-2/ ... WHEN POMEGRANATES HOWL. "Granaz Moussavi shows that she really gets the great tradition of Iranian movies about children. A film full of life, energy and courage (did I mention it’s shot on the streets of Kabul?) https://adelaidefilmfestival.org/ev/when-pomegranates-howl/ ABOUT ENDLESSNESS "Discuss: Roy Andersson is the greatest filmmaker working these days. No one makes such complex images, or makes watching them such an adventure. https://adelaidefilmfestival.org/event/about-endlessness/ Additional recommendations: HIGH GROUND, APPLES, THE EARTH IS AS BLUE AS AN ORANGE, THE TRUFFLE HUNTERS, JUMBO, IWEIRDO. 09.01.2022 "a marvelous piece of cinematic escapism that manages to deepen our connection to the world we all share" (Moveable Fest).
