24.01.2022 As the end of #menshealthweek draws near, it is worth keeping in mind how we can improve the health of the men and boys around us. 22.01.2022 As #strokeweek2020 draws to a close, its worth reminding ourselves of the signs to look for when someone is having a stroke. The Stroke Foundation uses the F.A.S.T cues to identify and act upon this leading cause of death and disability in Australia. Just remember: Face. Arms. Speech. Time.... Decisive action may help reduce the damage caused by a stroke, so calling an ambulance immediately upon seeing these signals is crucial. As for prevention, there are many ways of reducing risk factors through a variety of healthy lifestyle choices. You may wish to discuss this with your doctor, who can also assist in the management of cholesterol levels and blood pressure, another risk factor of strokes. Appointments are available at Affinity Family Medical through the website or with our friendly reception staff on (07) 4804 5680.

22.01.2022 A tip for #BowelCancerAwarenessMonth. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, this plate demonstrates what it should contain to benefit you, from the inside out. Two-thirds or more of your plate should contain whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts. ... No more than one-third of your plate should have animal protein, such as poultry or lean red meat. Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world. As of this year all eligible Australians aged 50 to 74 will be offered a free bowel screening test every two years. Feel free to discuss this further with your GP during your next consultation. Appointments can be made with Affinity Family Medical on 07 4804 5680 or via the website.

Previously Pap Smear Tests looked for changes to the cells of the cervix whereas the Cervical Screening Test looks for the virus that causes cell changes in the first place.... As such pap tests were offered every two years, but the more thorough Cervical Screening Test should be performed every five years if your results are normal. Cervical Screening Tests are offered to women 25 years and older and run in conjunction with the HPV vaccination program offered to teens. 01.01.2022 We all know that excess fat can affect our wellbeing, but the bathroom scales only provide part of the picture. Visceral fat is the fat found on our waistline, wrapped around our vital abdominal organs. As such, it's also referred to as 'hidden' fat. Unfortunately, scales cannot show whether an extra kilogram is muscle or fat, and they won't reveal where excess fat is stored. ... According to the Heart Foundation, for most adults, a waist measurement can provide an indicator for higher-than-healthy levels of internal fat. For most people, your health may be at risk if your waist size is more than 94cm, and you are a man or 80cm, and you are a woman. Like all tests of this kind, there are some limitations to the insights they provide. The Heart Foundation highlights that waist measurement is less accurate for certain groups, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as well as South Asian, Chinese and Japanese adults. As such, it is best to discuss your health concerns with your doctor first for a more accurate assessment. Consultations can be made with the doctors at Affinity Family Medical via the website or with our friendly reception staff on (07) 4804 5680.
