10.01.2022 What is an Anode? It’s basically a long rod, made of magnesium, that’s installed in all new mains pressure, electric, gas and Solar hot water tanks. Its job is to protect the hot water cylinder walls from corroding, from what’s called Electrolytic action. The Electrolysis is caused by the heating, and the flow of the hot water, passing through the hot water cylinder, and it is highly corrosive. The Sacrificial Anodes job is to attract that Electrolysis instead of the st...eel cylinder of the hot water tank. (That’s why it’s called Sacrificial) Major hot water tank manufacturers, including Rheem, Vulcan, Dux, AquaMax, and Solar Hart, install Sacrificial Anodes to protect the hot water cylinder walls from corroding during the 5 year warranty period. After that, the Sacrificial Anode corrodes away quickly, and can no longer protect the tank from the very damaging effects of Electrolysis. We basically suggest to all our customers to have your tanks Anode replaced at least every 7 to 9 years. By doing this you will basically keep your hot water cylinder free from any corrosion and dramatically increase its life. At the very least we recommend you should have your anode inspected at the 5 year hot water safety check and the plumber will be able to give you an indication of when it will most likely be due for replacement See more
