25.01.2022 More great news for Plumbing Bros, the journey continues and gets better every day! Well done to the team!
25.01.2022 Only a few days left to register for this Sundowner . I do hope to see you there! . Cheers . JB.
24.01.2022 Interesting to see a different approach to burgers being taken by this new company Williams. I am keen to see it in the flesh to form a proper view.
24.01.2022 I am curious about this announcement. Is Saturation another word for Fortressing. The difference seems to be the cost savings they suggest will come in labour etc. Only time will tell?
24.01.2022 HI folks, this is an interesting article from Smart Company today and puts forward a range of possibilities in the small business sector, post COVID-19. Some I am sure will get traction whilst others are more creative and subject to trends, and the ramp up of the economy and individual sector activity. There is little doubt that many things will be different. Anyway have a read and form your own view ... ultimately time will tell of course.... I trust that you are all getting through this present crisis and that you can see daylight on the other side. Take care until then.......... Cheers from me .... John
23.01.2022 Hi folks, it has taken me three days to get around to doing this post, following the FCA WA State franchise Conference on Tuesday at OPTUS Stadium. What I can share with you all is that the day was EPIC in every sense of that word. Venue 10/10 Sponsors 10/10 Speakers 10/10 ... 160 delegates 10/10 What more could we ask for? The WA organising committee was fantastic and each and every person had a role to play and executed it with effectiveness and efficiency. Wonderful to be involved. The testimonials and congratulations coming in from many on the day and every day since are consistently full of praise and positive commentary. A very humbling experience. This photo is at the end and some were not there at the time . but most were! Time now to get back to work and make a living..JB And remember folks . Do it Right. Do it Once. #franchisewa #positivefranchising #perthnow #smallbusinesswa #fca #franchisecouncilofaustralia #smallbusiness #businessbrokers #franchiseconsultants #westaustraliannewspaper #sundaytimes
22.01.2022 I have just watched Scott Morrison (PM) deliver the outline of the plan for tenancy matters; that is Landlords and Tenants. It is outline only and this is a brief summary for you. 1. It applies to those businesses which qualify for the 'JobKeeper' Program (Businesses with revenue of less than $50Million pa.... 2. It will be a mandatory Code and will be administered by the States. 3. Rent must be reduced proportionate to the individual business downturn. i.e. downturn in revenue of 45% sees a reduction in rent of 45%. Outgoings were not mentioned however I expect that they might stay as they are? 4. 50% of any reduction must be a "Waiver" and not simply a deferral. That is a Rent Holiday - No Cost to the Tenant of that 50%. 5. The balance of 50% can be a "Deferral" to be paid later. 6. Deferral amounts will be payable over the 'balance of the term of the lease' but not less that 12 months should the lease have less than 12 months to run. 7. Banks must come to the party for Landlords and Tenants, to bridge these issues, including Overseas Banks who support many large Landlords. 8. The moratorium on Evictions stays in place. So, whilst there is much detail to come, on the surface I can see some sense in it. It is a broad approach which in reality is the only way forward, given the scope of variation between the many types of businesses and their respective financial models in Australia. Now we need to see the State legislation to work alongside the present day existing State Legislation. I hope this is helpful to anyone that is not aware of today's Press Conference. Stay well people... Cheers . John
21.01.2022 FREE 'SUPPORT SERVICE' OFFER IN TOUGH TIMES More information for us all to digest on possible Tax relief in the face of tough times. Having lived and worked (and suffered), through the 1987 financial crisis and then the GFC particularly 2008 to 2010 I can attest to the need to stay entirely focused on what is happening in your business, AND what is happening around you and your business; matters which might impact on your present day strategies and plans. 21.01.2022 This is an important reminder for franchisors.. an expensive oversight by Ultra Tune... make sure that your information and financial statements etc contain sufficient details. Happy franchising .... JB
20.01.2022 This strategy, whist very expensive, will hopefully provide the platform for businesses to retain their workforce and the necessary skill sets that are required so that they can rebound once we are on the other side of this crisis. The faster the nation recovers, the faster we can get this money back into the government revenue stream. Employees will also benefit greatly and hopefully save them from months of hardship. Is it perfect, probably not but it just makes sense.
19.01.2022 A rare business; recession proof... now that is news! Great news actually.. get onto it if you are in the market..

19.01.2022 With times as tough as they are and cash in a business hard to find, it is important to use what you have not only to survive, but to prosper where and when you can. Now is not the time to cut your advertising budget and activity if you remain open for business; even partially. Yes it is risky but less risky than stopping your advertising. My personal view is that if you can, increase your spend and promote where it will count. Consumers are out there in one way or another s...pending their money every day. So if you have good value to offer, and you can put a worthwhile & valued loyalty offer with them, you will get your share of business. Consumers are loyal to those that support them when they need it, and that is now. Be one of those businesses that provides Value and great Service to consumers at a time of need and you will likely retain them for a long time after this challenge is over. Stay happy, healthy and safe folks and remember; Do it Right. Do it Once. Happy Franchising too . cheers .... 16.01.2022 Fantastic programmes for kids..... brilliant! Give them a call... the kids will love it and it just might start them off on an amazing life journey in engineering.
16.01.2022 This is an interesting decision taken by the Federal Court and it could have some knock-on impact for many businesses that work extended shift hours. Once the legal eagles have taken it in, then no doubt they will know what the future might hold? Or will they?
16.01.2022 With all the hype around the high level growth of On-line retailing the possible demise of 'bricks and mortar' retailing, this article is refreshing to read. Take a gander and make up your own mind. For me I can see traditional retailing being around for a very long time to come as Innovation and Customer Service take their rightful place with more and more businesses.. what do you think?
13.01.2022 Important news for ALL business owners........ things might be tough for a while so grab your share of financial support from the Federal Government now!
13.01.2022 A great article here from Phil Chapman of Lease1, Australia's leading retail leasing expert and one of the great speakers at our State Conference next Tuesday. Take a read, it is worth it! https://www.mybusiness.com.au//5750-franchisors-landlords-

11.01.2022 Great to see that my client, James Riddle and the power team at Plumbing Bros have just recruited their first franchise partner for a region of Melbourne. John B will ultimately have around 8-10 plumbers working for him within his region and duplicating the success of Plumbing Bros here in WA. Recruitment activity in franchising is on the rise which is great to see given the climate we are all in. James has several additional people in the final stages of process too which sh...ould see them operating in four states by EOFY if all goes to plan. Plumbing Bros; Changing the Perception of Plumbing. Well done team! ...... Happy franchising folks, stay safe out there.. 11.01.2022 By way of an update for you, the timeline for the package for Landlords and tenants is as follows: "This Code comes into effect in all states and territories from a date following 3 April 2020 (being the date that National Cabinet agreed to a set of principles to guide the Code to govern commercial tenancies as affected by the COVID19 pandemic) to be defined by each jurisdiction, for the period during which the Commonwealth JobKeeper program remains operational" I sincerely hope that this assists in maintaining businesses in operation, albeit at a much slower rate for most, during this terrible time. Best wishes from me . John
11.01.2022 I am really impressed to see the good work being done by my franchisor clients to support their franchisees in this time of difficulty. They know that the real foundation stones to a successful franchise network are the franchisees at the coalface, looking after the customers/clients to the best of their abilities. Great support, guidance and advice is needed often on the journey of franchising and those franchisors who subscribe to this unconditionally achieve the best for t...heir members and only then for themselves. It is success built on success. Another key feature is that one franchisee can speak to their peers about anything and everything and get both moral support and a range of differing viewpoints on their initiatives to overcome the challenges they may be having that others have overcome before. What a great comfort this is. Happy franchising people .......and take care of yourselves out there .................. 11.01.2022 COVID - 19 is now impacting many businesses; too many infact. I jave just prepared a short list of things that might be worth considering in your business to minimise the impact. It is not a 'one strategy fits all' list but hopefully it stimulates your mind if you find yourself under pressure, and need to do 'something'. Happy franchising.... 10.01.2022 My first rant for 2020. I have been silent on the so called "wage theft front, and in more recent times greatly disturbed by the vitriolic diatribe being peddled by some members of both the public and journalists in particular. Theft, is with Intent. Intent to steal from others, something they own or are entitled to receive.... Theft is not through ignorance, or simply by mistake, even though the outcome may be the same. The difference is serious though in the current context. Now today, we hear that Coles have admitted to around $20million in wage underpayments over a period of years. Does anyone really think that the Chairman and Directors of Coles are thieves? Of course not. It should not have happened but it has, and people will get their money. Some might argue it is forced savings even though it should never be this way. They have joined a long list or corporate giants who have been labelled as thieves. For me this is sickening and wreaks of a US style journalistic/sensationist approach. Australian wage award entitlement structures are nothing short of extremely complex and this is again evidence that even with the best efforts of sophisticated corporations with specialist HR departments, mistakes are easy to make....too easy to make obviously and things must change or this will continue. There are now specific consultancies across Australia which provide services to business, to help them navigate through the myriad of entitlements which may or may not apply to certain employees, at certain times, or in certain circumstances and, even they say it is too complex and ever changing, challenging their own abilities to keep up to date. Too often we see journalists and other financial commentators use the most inappropriate terminology in the interests of a headline to get attention, and of course, to make money; Let us not forget that objective please. In my own view innocent people like George Calombaris are included in this matter. Did he do the wages for his empire? No he did not, should he now be labeled as a thief? No he should not, and yet it has brought down his entire empire and no doubt scarred him mentally for life. Wake up journalists and be honest and not simply look for an opportunity to sensationalise a matter, and whats more, in your own interests or those of your employer. People too often get hurt and financially ruined whilst you create money for the owners of your particular media platform. Shame on you! Rant over. All the best for 2020 people, franchising in WA is alive and progressing nicely, so lets keep it that way. Happy franchising . 09.01.2022 Boom .... validation of the awesome services that Weeding Women provide! Congrats to you Kate..
09.01.2022 With all the media coverage over wages and underpayments (not theft), this is a useful article from SmartCompany. It is definitely worth a read and then adoption of good risk management practices. . Happy franchising folks... JB
08.01.2022 This is an interesting read for those of you that are following the Franchise Sector Review and in particular the appointment of the Franchise TaskForce and their role into the future and any recommendations. It is a long read however, written by Derek Minus and it puts the task force process into clear light against a back drop of similar exercises. Whilst the headline is inflammatory I do think that his conclusions are based on good reasoning.... Personally, I simply want the ACCC to get on with the job of dealing with the genuine complaints and then searching out the scoundrel franchisors (quoted here from solid data, as being around 1.5% of all franchisors), and take them on ...... all the way to convictions, and rid the sector of bad conduct bordering on dishonesty. They can do this now .... why don't they is the key question? Is it because they don't have enough money or people .. if it is, then fix that; fast. Franchising already does and can continue to flourish, with good people in good businesses demonstrating honesty, integrity and fairness in all dealings. Get rid of those that don't want to play by the rules and the business world will be a better place. Rant over, and happy franchising folks, from my desk the future is bright albeit with a few clowns around causing grief and reputational damage to the sector! ..... JB
08.01.2022 Hi folks, now this is a great assembly of current and successful marketing brains. We have all been to digital marketing seminars but this is different. If you have a need to win more customers spend a couple of hours taking notes on how to do that, enjoy some good food and do some networking and it is bound to be a winner! Sadly I will be interstate however please make the time and grab the opportunity whilst it is there. Enjoy yourself. Happy franchising too !!... JB
08.01.2022 Hi everyone, I have been pretty quiet during the past weeks and whilst I have been quite busy, I have also had the time to reflect on many things as I am sure have you all. Recently came across this and I feel certain that many businesses, and the people within them, would benefit from looking closely at this program of assessment and where suitable adopting it across their structures and people.. take a read and see what you think. It might stimulate some thoughts that you c...an implement right now as part of your 'Post-Covid Recovery' strategies. It is from a US consultancy and with some research you might find someone here with this same approach. Often a 'soft systems analysis' (people and relationship/structure issues), will uncover many 'blockages' in efficiency and effectiveness too. There are many consultants who conduct such programs if you 'sense' that your organisation could benefit from such a study... most can btw! https://a2knowledge.com/blog/using-key-value-indicators/ Have a cracker week and happy franchising too .. Cheers from me . JB
07.01.2022 It has been my privilege to work alongside James, Joe and the entire PB Franchising support team to build and develop their unique 'white collar' franchise model for a booming 'blue collar' industry that never stops growing -and won't in the future. Twelve months of concentrated development effort on their part and a wonderful outcome. It is always great to work with people who have the right attitude and a great business with a bright future. For me it is inspiring to watc...h them grow and learn about our sector. Now it is time for the rubber to hit the road and the Melbourne franchise Expo proved to be the perfect place to start. There was great acceptance of this new concept immediately, so we are all enthused about the future. Watch this space is my tip..they are bound to go a long way. Happy franchising folks .... 06.01.2022 At last! A story about wages that is not biased toward the franchise sector. But sadly the headline reads that way :(( The real issue is, and has always been about people taking advantage (knowingly and unknowingly), over others who are legitimate employees and doing a days work - for which they should get the correct days pay! The more of these people that are found out the better. Employees have rights and they should be respected by everyone.
