25.01.2022 #rugoftheweek While many #kunduz rugs are simple black or blue motifs on a plush red background, Waziri ghul rugs are more intricately patterned. The ghul (octagonal motifs) that cover the centre of the carpet are unique to each weaving group. Waziri rugs are made in towns rather than a nomadic setting and are prized for their sophisticated patterning and high knot count #afghanrugs #rugsale 194x105cm. Was $1250, now $1000 in our sale.

23.01.2022 #rugoftheweek Thousands of kilometres away from Afghanistan, Berber tribes in Morocco use the same techniques as the #mushwani we showcased last week to create #glaoui rugs. Woven kelim, fluffy pile motifs and overembroidery all feature, but with a very different colour palette. This rug is a vintage piece but the colours still glow. Rugs are usually made at home by women although many co-ops have now been set up. The design here is traditional, based on tribal tattoos. These almost square rugs had a special purpose - they were tablecloths which were spread over your more expensive carpet at meal times. Communal dishes are set on the soffre while dinner guests sit on the carpet around it to share the feast. They are simple, hand-woven wool kelims, hard wearing but also beautiful. 11.01.2022 #taimani rugs are some of the last truly #nomadicrugs produced before war and drought forced people into the towns from their nomadic lifestyle in Afghanistan. The pile on a Taimani is usually longer and shaggier than a Balouch and the colour range is much wider. This lovely example ranges from creamy yellow through orange/red and purple/brown. We love the flowered border and the quirkiness of breaking the colour pattern in the corners to add two flowers of the same colour. The weavers add pile to parts of the pattern and often overembroider other sections, resulting in a real depth of colour and pattern. These are rugs you can stare at forever. 07.01.2022 #rugoftheweek **SOLD** Nothing is perfect and time leaves its mark. The charm of this vintage rug from Iran is in how the colours have faded over time. The design itself is simple - medallions and flowers - but the changes in colour have added complexity. Small dye lots of wool are often used in rug weaving, particularly in smaller towns and villages, and over time they fade into different tones. This is known as "abrash". Layers of cotton are stitched together and then embroidered in distinctive patterns. They were regarded as symbols of wealth. Sizes vary (no such thing as standard sizes) but many will cover a double or queen size bed. Some have been made into doona covers.
