10.01.2022 Matt Preston 13 May 2008: It's rare that I come out of a place wondering about ways the meal could have been better. Well, OK, that's not actually that rare - what is rare is struggling to find any. Maybe the almost curd-like yoghurt soup called koroutti could have used a smidgen more salt alongside the bread, fried onion and dried mint in it. And maybe you could push for a better wine list or marginally more polish on the room, although the high-street shopfront hung with ru...gs and pictures of doughty armed Afghans riding yaks over snowy passes is pretty much what you'd expect - and totally appropriate at the price. (To drink, there is always beer, of course, or even better, $6 gin'n'tonics, both of which seemed made for this food.) And oh, what food. Much of it was lighter and more fragrant than most of the Punjabi fare we see around town, and not nearly as hot as south Indian. In fact, the only burn of the night came somewhat surprisingly from a sweet tomatoey stew of prunes with firm yellow split peas. You must have the yoghurt soup, but also a bean-and-rice soup made with a wonderfully clean vegetable stock. Fronds of dill provide a lift to this winter warmer, which is claimed as the Afghan equivalent of "Jewish penicillin". Also worth considering is a thin, fried turnover filled with a smear of vegetables, rather good steamed lamb dumplings slathered in a very Turkic mix of home-made yoghurt and tomato, and their ashak. These are a bit like those Russian ravioli - pierogi - but slightly crisper, more pastry-like, and filled with leek.
