24.01.2022 "Avoir la banane" (Lit: to have the banana) is an informal expression meaning "To be very happy, to have big smile on your face." Its thought that this expression refers to the fact that an upturned banana resembles a smile. Michel a réussi ses examens finaux, et il a la banane!- Michael has passed his final exams and hes got a big smile all over his face! #frenchexpressions #learnfrench #alliancefrancaise

21.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there Did you know that the French celebrate Mothers Day a little differently from Australia? In France, Mothers Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in May. If Pentecôte falls on that day as happens this year, it moves to the first Sunday in June. The French never give chrysanthemums to their mothers for Mothers Day, or indeed on any social occasion because those flowers have a strong association with death, and are traditionally laid on graves on the Fête de Toussaint on 2 November.

20.01.2022 Bonjour, join Alliance Franaise Gold Coast to celebrate Bastille Day

20.01.2022 Thought for the day...do you know what it means? (translation in the comments below.)

19.01.2022 During World War One, red poppies were the first flowers to spring up on the devastated battlefields of Northern France and Belgium. The bright red blooms inspired a Canadian army surgeon to write the poem "In Flanders Fields", which channels the voices of the fallen soldiers buried beneath them. You can read the poem by clicking on the link below. Red poppies have come to symbolise the blood of all the soldiers who have died in war. https://www.awm.gov.au/articl//in-flanders-fields-the-poem

19.01.2022 has been celebrated in France since 1982 on 21st June, the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Musicians, singers and live bands perform live in the streets and cafés of cities, towns and villages throughout France to the delight of crowds. The celebration has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 85 countries. Covid 19 has put a stop to that in 2020, but the tradition will continue online, and with the relaxing of restrictions, in some venues in the larger towns where social distancing can be observed.

17.01.2022 Chercher midi quatorze heures (Lit: to look for midday at 2 pm) is used in the same way as we might say To make a mountain out of a molehill. It means To make something more complicated than it actually is. Il y a une solution simple au problme, ne chercher pas midi quatorze heures. There is a simple solution to the problem, dont make it so complicated. #frenchlanguage #frenchexpressions #learnfrench #alliancefranaise

16.01.2022 "Occupe-toi de tes oignons!" (Lit: look after your onions) is an informal expression meaning "Mind your own business!" As you can imagine, it is used often in conversation : " Combien ça a coûté?" - How much did that cost? " Occupe-toi de tes oignons!" - Mind your own business!... #frenchexpressions #frenchconversation #learnfrench See more

09.01.2022 11 NOVEMBER - REMEMBRANCE DAY How they chose the unknown soldier Exactly 100 years ago on Wednesday, the bodies of two nameless soldiers taken from the quagmire of the Western Front one French and one British were honoured simultaneously at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and in London’s Westminster Abbey. 09.01.2022 Raconter des salades (Lit: "to tell salads") means: To tell lies or to wildly exaggerate a story. Its informal, but not really unfriendly and can be used jokingly. The image of lettuce leaves made into a colouful salad by adding several different ingredients could be the inspiration for this expression. Je ne crois pas cette histoire, tu racontes des salades! - "I don't believe that story, you're making it up!" #frenchlanguage #frenchexpressions #learnfrench #alliancefrançaise
