25.01.2022 Up until recently I had been putting up with some strange display issues on my Doctor Who (Bally, 1992) and Judge Dredd (Bally, 1993). I figured it would be a good opportunity to write a general instructional post about integrated circuit replacement on a circuit board.

24.01.2022 Once again my favourite time of the year is here... Pinfest! I have a blast at Pinfest every year so Im always excited for September when it rolls around. This year, we took Fish Tales to Pinfest to see if it would survive the Pinfest challenge.

24.01.2022 This year, the call went out for VCP members to donate machines for the event. Having enjoyed the quality of the machines in previous years, Fiona and I decided to put our hands up and bring our Getaway along for the competition.

23.01.2022 This year, we decided to donate one of our own machines for the event. Getaway was playing well so we decided to bring it along. So, we loaded it into the car and headed to Caves Beach!

22.01.2022 It has been just over a year since I restored my first Doctor Who (Bally, 1992), so I guess it is fitting that Im now finishing up restoring my second.

22.01.2022 Today, we headed to Collector Con, an annual collector's convention with memorabilia, pop culture collectables, comics and games, and all sorts of other toys. This convention was another great opportunity to introduce pinball to the masses. This time we brought two machines: Fish Tales (Williams,1992) and Demolition Man (Williams, 1994).

16.01.2022 Lets finish off the year by repairing a classic Bally game! Bally games are classics in terms of gameplay and artwork, so it was a pleasure to get to work on this one for a customer: Six Million Dollar Man (Bally, 1978). This machine had not been working ever since the customer got it from a relative, and they wanted it up and running for their 60th birthday party in a few weeks. We were on a deadline, and there was lots to do!

15.01.2022 There were two Fish Tales machines in the lot I purchased during our pinball road trip. I figured I would restore them both and sell them on.

14.01.2022 Having only just finished restoring my first machine, I was game for another. I contacted a seller in northwestern Sydney who was selling a Getaway. She and her partner had had the game for several years - it had been sitting around and was no longer wanted.

14.01.2022 In early 2015, I got in touch with an ex-amusement machine operator. He had ten pinball machines left to sell, out of his original inventory of several hundred. The problem? He was just over 700 kilometres away!

13.01.2022 Having repaired a couple of Doctor Who (Bally, 1992) machines, Ive found that the Time Expander mini playfield always needs to be rebuilt. I thought I would do a small write-up of how I approach these repairs and what the result looks like.

13.01.2022 This restoration was for a customer who had just come into possession of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pinball machine from a family member who originally wanted to sell it. Luckily, he convinced them not to sell it and instead get it restored. Of course, I was happy to help! https://www.afpinball.com/rest/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles

12.01.2022 Last Action Hero came to me as a light restoration project for a customer who had had the machine for some time but was moving it to a new location. The machine was relatively functional, but had a few issues that required extensive repair. I have a soft spot for Data East machines, so I was keen to take this one on and see how a full restoration would make it pop like new again.

12.01.2022 Christmas sure was a good time for pinball repairs! Several weeks ago, a customer advised me that their Elvira and the Party Monsters was no longer working. They had had the game for a long time and it had always played without issue. Now, it would not turn on at all. When they opened the backbox to inspect the game, they found a lot of green electrolyte from badly leaking batteries on the MPU board. Uh oh! This was likely the source of their problems, so they brought the MPU board in to me for repair.

11.01.2022 Trident (Stern Electronics, 1979) was my first foray into classic solid state (SS) game repair for a customer. While I initially wanted to work on Stars as my first classic SS restoration, a customer approached me about fixing his Trident so I decided to bring this one back to life first.

11.01.2022 After my World Cup Soccer restoration, I was rearing to go for another. Doctor Who (Bally, 1992) definitely looked like more of a technical challenge so I decided to sink my teeth into it and see how far I could get.

10.01.2022 Check out our Pinfest trip for 2019! This year we brought Fish Tales again and it got an even better workout than last year.

10.01.2022 Up until this point I had spent almost all of my time restoring Bally and Williams games. I was comfortable enough with doing plenty of repairs on those machines, but I was keen to get some more experience working on a game from a different manufacturer. Enter Teed Off (Gottlieb, 1993).

10.01.2022 World Cup Soccer (Bally, 1994) was the first machine I chose to restore from the eight machines I purchased during our recent pinball adventure. Getting a relatively easy machine fixed and out the door was my main goal (pun intended).

07.01.2022 It's been a while since my last post! So, let's go over some recent repairs for another Fish Tales (Williams, 1992)! This customer had not played their Fish Tales in several years and it had sat around not working. The difficult part was that the customer (and the machine) were in Orange, NSW. A bit beyond the typical house call distance! Luckily, he was able to bring the machine to our workshop for the various repairs that it needed. It turned out great!

07.01.2022 When the components on the high voltage section of the display driver board in WPC pinball systems goes out of spec, they can affect the display, rendering text and images on the screen impossible to read (if present at all), and potentially reducing the life of the display.

06.01.2022 Time to lay down the law! Judge Dredd was the last Bally/Williams machine I had left to restore of my original road trip haul.

05.01.2022 Johnny Mnemonic (Williams, 1995) was another machine from our pinball road trip. Fiona and I both freed up our Easter long weekend and devoted it entirely to restoring Johnny Mnemonic from start to finish. Just like the restored machine, our work this time around was fast and furious.

05.01.2022 Yesterday, Campbelltown Council hosted Nerd Con for the first time, a small pop culture expo featuring cosplay, games, workshops, and plenty of stalls. I thought this would be a good opportunity to spread the pinball gospel, so Fiona and I decided to bring three machines to the event of the public to play!

04.01.2022 I recently got in touch with a pinball machine collector in Glenhaven who wanted to sell his collection. He was moving house and was planning on selling his machines instead of moving them. He had a number of machines for sale, including Demolition Man (Williams, 1994).

04.01.2022 Ever since she first saw it, Tales of the Arabian Nights has been Fiona's favourite game. And I don't blame her. It really is a beautiful game, and really gives you that feeling of being in a "world under glass" when you're playing it. So, when the opportunity to restore one of these games presented itself, we jumped at the chance! Unfortunately, by the time we finished the restoration, the game had almost killed us, but it was worth it for the chance to bring this beauty back to playing like new.

04.01.2022 Welcome to the Jungle, baby! A customer of mine had pulled a Guns N' Roses machine out of his warehouse for the first time in years and wanted it to brought back to working condition. I just needed to get it back up and playing, and repair a few known issues. I ended up performing some interesting repairs on this machine which warranted writing some of them up.

03.01.2022 If you talk to any serious pinball collector (particularly those that have several games), they all seem to have one thing in common. At some point, they get bitten by the pinball bug.
