21.01.2022 REST IN PEACE, COMMANDER RAPHAEL MUSABI MWITA. Dedicated to wildlife and beloved by both his family and colleagues, Commander Raphael Musabi Mwita of the Tanzan...ia Wildlife Management Authority - TAWA and the Tanzania Forest Services Agency was slain by poachers on 27 May in a shootout in the Uzungwa Nature Reserve, Iringa district, where he led the anti-poaching team. The Commander was 28 years old, and is survived by his pregnant wife, his daughter, and his family. Please take the time to view the photos, including his family, and the images of his boots and uniform on his coffin, flanked by his devoted colleagues. We have already sent our separate respects to his colleagues, family and agencies. May the Commander rest in eternal peace, with our deepest thanks for his heroic service to wildlife and forestry.

21.01.2022 Hydro-electric dams will probably be built in Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve and in Zimbabwe and Zambia’s Batoka Gorge below Victoria Falls. Elephant hunting wi...ll resume in Botswana. To me, there is no more important cause than conservation of Africa’s wilderness and wildlife so I don’t like any of these decisions. But I find it hard to criticize without feeling like a hypocrite. I live near Cape Town where the last lion was shot in the 1800s and the last leopard in the 1950s but laws continue to permit the killing of predators like caracal. My daily lifestyle has a far greater negative impact on the environment than a rural Botswanan or Tanzanian. I live in a comfortable home with all modern conveniences (including electricity from nuclear power). My carbon footprint is big. I regularly fly or drive a 4x4 to parks and stay in upmarket safari lodges. Near these lodges are local people living simply and gently on the planet (the kind of lives we all should be living?). To them, fresh water and meat are true luxuries. However, I can go to a supermarket and buy beef, pork or fish, thereby contributing to the mass killing of creatures as sentient as elephant (and to the destruction of natural habitat). Much criticism of Botswana and Tanzania seems to come from the first-world, which have already destroyed a lot of their own wilderness and actively kill some of their wild animals, like bears, wolves, whales, sharks and badgers. Some of these countries once had colonies in Africa and exploited the continent’s natural resources and its people. (Ironically, Frederick Selous shot thousands of animals in Africa, yet a reserve is named after him.) Different areas of Africa have different challenges and require different solutions. Criticism without co-operation polarizes and alienates. Let’s listen first, try understand the nuances, then offer meaningful assistance. There have been misguided calls for tourists to boycott Botswana and Tanzania. This would be a big mistake. The best thing is to come on safari (watch that carbon footprint). The more people who visit, the more incentive there is for governments to conserve wilderness and wildlife. We’re all in this together. See more

10.01.2022 While gemsbok all over the country are known to be elusive animals, those in the south-westernmost corner of the Tsau //Khaeb National Park are of a different b...reed. Hard to believe they stem from the same legendary beast, these gemsbok have made the cosy town of Oranjemund their home. Here they wander lazily through the streets, doze under shady trees, and munch on fresh, green lawn when hunger hits. Although placed in the midst of a wild and ancient desert, these animals have become so comfortable with their luxury environment that the human residents had no choice but to accept their company. The gemsbok has since become the official representative of the town and features proudly on its coat of arms. #namibia #travel #africa #camping #safari #holiday #photography #adventure
