03.01.2022 Awer Mabil’s story is remarkable. Born to South Sudanese parents, Awer grew up in a refugee camp in Kenya before moving to Australia at age 11. He was 13 when h...e joined his first football team, 15 when he was scouted, and 17 when he debuted for Adelaide United. Two years later - and after an FFA Cup triumph - he was off to Europe to join FC Midtjylland. But, the move didn’t initially go as he would’ve liked. He was sent on two loan spells where he was relegated twice, before returning to Midtjylland and making an impact. That earned him a Socceroos call up, where he scored on debut while playing alongside childhood friend and fellow Socceroos debutant Thomas Deng. Mabil went on to star for the Socceroos at the AFC Asian Cup, but had to cope with receiving the terrible news of the passing of his sister. But, he used the unbelievable low to fuel everything he did in his life. He won the Danish Cup in 2018/19 before having a breakout season with Midtjylland and claiming his first league title silverware in 2019/20. Now he’s achieved another dream of his: to have the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League. With Midtjylland down 1-0 in the qualification-defining playoff match, Mabil’s superb assist inspired his team to score an additional three goals and seal a Champions League spot. And Awer was overcome with emotion. Once the fourth goal went in, he collapsed to the ground. He knew he had achieved one of his childhood dreams. The question is: What will he achieve next?
