15.01.2022 DROUGHT UPDATE re: URGENT NEED of LIFE SUSTAINING WATER at Mercy School and Orphanage "As it is now, it is bad and it is truly affecting the children. For the ...first time in many years, we are having a situation when we have to send children to hospital due to water borne diseases. The learning in School is interrupted because the resident children spent a lot time fetching water from the river to bath and get to school late. In the evenings, they equally waste away prep time because they must get water to bath and wash before they settle down for evening studies. The worst scenario is they have to content with long queues at the river since people from the community are also crowding at the same stream to draw water. The rains were expected early September but so far there is no indication of rains. The temperatures are un-usually high and this has caused the water levels in the Well to go down. In fact the only time to get some water from the pump is late in the night and it will take almost an hour to pump out 50 litres." DAILY MINIMAL USAGE USE IS APPROXIMATELY 3,500 litres/day for the school and orphanage. This is for consumption, cooking, cleaning and washing clothes. WATER PURCHASE IS NEEDED Until the rains come, water is collected from a communal stream which entails hardship and much time spent in ‘taking one’s turn’ to laboriously collect the short supply of water being shared many members of the community. (see video in an earlier post) This supply in the stream is not what could be classified as ‘SAFE WATER’. Children have now been hospitalised because of water borne disease. SHORT TERM SOLUTION BEING CONSIDERED TODAY 1. A more reliable and safe supply of water from the purchase of water per a 6,000-litre truck. 2. Each truck load of 6,000 litres is at a cost of $140.00 per load. 3. With the daily figure for usage at 3,500 litres this presents a LARGE COSTING PER WEEK which is beyond the funding capacity of the Orphanage.. THEY NEED OUR HELP URGENTLY If you can help financially please visit the www.africanaction.org.au for donation details.

12.01.2022 MERCY SCHOOL DROUGHT UPDATE The joy of having safe water! Thank you for the support to be able to send funds to purchase a truck/boozer load of water for the k...ids. They got clean water yesterday even though boozers are rare to get because of the demand. Wonder of wonders, Mercy also received some showers of rain yesterday evening. Only a little rain but it helped reduce the dust.
