25.01.2022 HOW A DJEMBE IS MADE Carving a quality djembe takes experience, skill, strength and patience. An authentic West African djembe is hand carved with plenty of elbow grease from a single log of wood (the denser the better), and then skinned with a hide that is tensioned by a system of rings and rope. The finished drum is the result of the labours of several specialised and experienced craftspeople.

18.01.2022 A Maasai ceremony in Kenya. Maasai music traditionally consists of rhythms provided by a chorus of vocalists singing harmonies while a song leader, or olaranyani, sings the melody. Both singing and dancing sometimes occur around manyattas, and involve flirting. Young men will form a line and chant rhythmically, "Oooooh-yah", with a growl and staccato cough along with the thrust and withdrawal of their lower bodies. Girls stand in front of the men and make the same pelvis lunges while singing a high dying fall of "Oiiiyo..yo" in counterpoint to the men. Although bodies come in close proximity, they do not touch

10.01.2022 DJEMBE ANATOMY Technically speaking, the djembe is a member of the membranophone family of musical instruments, consisting of a wooden shell covered by a membrane. The dimensions and ratios of the bowl and pipe affect the way sound resonates. A well carved shell is the primary factor in tonal quality, followed closely by the hide it's finished with.

09.01.2022 This is the Akan drum the earliest African-American object in the British Museum. It was made over 300 years ago in the Akan region of Ghana, West Africa. It’s thought the drum travelled across the Atlantic aboard a slave ship, but it’s not known for sure. Drums were played during these journeys and captives were forced to dance for exercise in order to keep them healthier amid the horrendous conditions for labour on slave plantations. In North America, drums were confiscated and banned as part of the forced suppression of enslaved Africans and their culture. Around 1730, the drum was acquired by a Reverend Clerk in Virginia then a British colony and now a state in the USA and it then passed into the collection of Sir Hans Sloane, and then to the British Museum.

07.01.2022 Naoto is from Japan and has loved djembe for a few years now. He'd been playing on a mahogany djembe from Indonesia with a thin skin and was looking for something with more warmth but a bit of pop in the top end. Then he found this 13" lenke djembe from Guinea "Cruise Control" ...suffice to say he can't wait to get down to the St Kilda jam by the beach on a Thursday and get her cruising!
