25.01.2022 Reminiscing.... this time last year. Don’t get us wrong. We like the rustic, simple, unfettered wilderness. And then there’s this. Mind blown. ... #postcovidtravelgoals #capewinelands #laresidence #franschoek #southafrica

24.01.2022 Whilst we’ve all been pining for the African wilderness, our wonderful Ops & Product Manager Lindy has been dusting off her charcoal pencils and putting this time to good use. We think she’s a bit of a hidden talent! So, are you a roller, tunneler or dweller? ... We’re talking about dung beetles of course. Able to roll over 1000 times their own body weight in poo. Dung beetles are the only insect known to navigate by the Milky Way. Without the galaxy in view, the beetles just go round and round aimlessly in circles. 22.01.2022 Sound on for the famous Madiba shuffle! This legend would have been 102 years old today. How’s this clip for sheer joy and unity? ... It’s an unforgettable moment in documentary film ‘Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony’....which, amongst other things, demonstrates music as a means of protest and mobilisation. Happy birthday Nelson Mandela, we need your inspiration now as much as ever. #madibashuffle #nelsonmandeladay2020

21.01.2022 For anyone who needs this right now. The night orchestra of Namibia... Thanks for sharing Ongava. ... #nightsounds #namibia #africanwilderness #musictoourears

20.01.2022 Want to count the wrinkles on an elephant’s foot? Occasionally, there are times in the African bush when you can feel your heart thumping in your chest, and this is one of them... Natural Selection’s sunken ground level hide is a giant highlight where you can view an elephant at toenail level!... Absolute magic for photographers, and anyone up for a thrilling (but safe!) adventure with the world’s largest land mammal. This would have been today’s highlight for sure. #africanfamilysafaris #naturalselection #familysafaris #wildlifephotography #safariadventure #bucketlisttravel

19.01.2022 So, so, so excited for dear friend and REMARKABLE, INSPIRING WOMAN Aminata Conteh-Biger being interviewed by Lisa Wilkinson tonight on The Project. Amii’s story needs to be heard, spoken of and shared. Her book ‘Rising Heart’ is out now, and her life’s purpose The Aminata Maternal Foundation is at the core of it all. Please watch tonight, order her book, support this cause - for African women everywhere, especially Sierra Leone. ... #Repost @lisa_wilkinson with @make_repost Tonight on the SUNDAY @theprojecttv possibly one of the most beautiful, but also utterly heartbreaking stories I’ve ever had the privilege to help tell on the show. And to be honest, I had real difficulty holding it all together. Ultimately it’s a story of hope and transformation - what we all need right now - with the most exquisitely unexpected The Notebook-style love story thrown in for good measure. I simply can’t do it justice here, so make sure you’re watching....and tell every woman (big and small) you know, because I promise, you won’t be sorry. 18.01.2022 Today, our co-director Beck Field was due to be flying into Botswana on an annual reconnaissance of new properties and experiences. Darn virus. ... Plan B! Join us over the next week as we feature these incredible camps daily. It’s not quite the adventure she had in mind, but we can’t not share these wild places with you and the pioneering spirits that created them. First up, meet the relatively new kid on the block Beagle Expedition’s Kweene Trails, owned and run by husband & wife team Simon & Marleen Byron. With all safaris privately guided by the renowned Simon (listed in Conde Nast’s Top 25 Guide’s in Africa ); and available only 100 days a year; this tiny, remote, exclusive seasonal gem is feet on the ground experience at its best, and not a soul for as far as the eye can see. If you have a taste for pure, unfettered wilderness, this is for you. Location, location, location! 17.01.2022 It’s International Yoga Day and the solstice. It made me think of that time @lisagrauag and I led a truly wonderful group of humans to Tanzania on our very first Heart of Africa Yoga Safari. We sat on rocks, watched wildlife, laid our mats on the sand, grass, canvas and mud. Explored the inner and outer landscapes, connected to those passed. Sunrises, sunsets, stars, rain. Even a fire inside a tent! ... Ah, it was grand. I’m still not doing enough yoga. And Africa....well, it’s been too long! #africanfamilysafaris #yogasafari #mindfultravel #unforgettablejourneys #wellnessinthewilderness #soltsice #newbeginnings

17.01.2022 The virtual fam trip through Botswana continues today, as we start the week at Natural Selection’s Jackal & Hide. We often get asked how much a safari costs. Well, it’s a bit like the proverbial piece of string..... At African Family Safaris we aim to provide high quality safaris at as wide a price range as possible; and our friends at Natural Selection have got the range covered. ... Jackal & Hide is a high quality safari camp that doesn’t break the bank. It’s a simple but beautifully comfortable camp that nestles into an island of trees overlooking a floodplain of the Khwai River. The camp has focussed on all the essentials that make for a superb safari and trimmed back elsewhere. The guides are great, wildlife excellent and most importantly, it’s away from the crowds in a private reserve where you can drive off road and head out at any time of day or night. . Born from a team of old school safari professionals, Natural Selection knows all the secret ingredients that can make a magical safari. #africanfamilysafaris #naturalselectiontravel #jackalandhidecamp #safarisforeveryone

15.01.2022 Mellow Sunday tunes from Malawi....

13.01.2022 Immense gratitude for those years we spent living and working in wild places, amongst wild creatures who always have the right of way. Meanwhile in Zambia yesterday....

13.01.2022 So what does simple luxury look like? At Beagle Expeditions it looks like comfortable bedrolls with fine linen; al fresco hot bucket showers and drop loos with views completely open to nature so you may see wildlife ambling past as you are busy soaping up! Dining is fresh, healthy and delicious under the African skies, with quality coffee and hand selected South African wines. ... You might be off the beaten track, but the essential comforts are never jeopardised, and neither is the care for the environment you are camping in. Tomorrow, we leave the private paradise of Kweene Trails and head (virtually) to Machaba Safaris Gomoti Plains Camp - I wish!! #africanfamilysafaris #beagleexpeditions #privatecamping #simpleluxury

12.01.2022 Some epic evidence of the enormous crossings happening on the Mara River right now! The annual Great Migration is truly a sight that can render you speechless. This particular phenomenon is very often on people’s bucket list, so ask us how you can realise that dream AND escape the hordes. ... Tanzania has just re-opened it’s international borders and safari camps are operational with new covid safe amendments. For those that are able to travel, this is worth thinking about as you’ll have the Serengeti all to yourself. We’re here when you’re ready. 11.01.2022 Rest in Power, Rafiki. Silverback of the 17 member Nkuringo mountain gorilla family since 2008, aged 25. Died in the prime of his life by a spear to the stomach from poachers, whilst they were hunting antelope in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Such devastating news for conservation and the endangered mountain gorillas; and also for the families of the poachers that now face life imprisonment.... Covid-19’s impacts are far reaching. With ecotourism suspended, no tourists visiting, and no guides or staff with a presence; wildlife is left exposed and vulnerable. Likewise, with no tourist dollars providing employment for Ugandans, people are forced to hunt for bushmeat out of desperation. A chance encounter with the lead male of a large family group has ended in tragedy for all. A safari may feel like a self-indulgence; but the reality is that it undoubtedly conserves and protects precious species and wilderness areas, and provides a sustainable source of income for people. Your once in a lifetime safari makes a very real difference. Powerful, proud portrait by @jamphamphoto #rafikisilverback #nkuringogroup #mountaingorillas #conservationtourism #safarissavespecies

10.01.2022 Thanks to some dedicated residents and die hard river chasers, we were able to sit on the sofa in Sydney yesterday morning and watch the annual Okavango floodwaters trickle their way into the dusty village of Maun, Botswana. Beginning as condensation in the highlands of Angola; and travelling hundreds of km’s to nourish and fill the floodplains of the 1000th World Heritage Site - the Okavango Delta; the river snakes through twists and turns before finally reaching Maun an...d eventually disappearing into the Kalahari sands. This annual event is more than just an ecological happening that benefits and sustains wildlife - although that in itself is vital and miraculous. To the local community it’s like Christmas. It lives in the memory of any person that has ever lived in this dusty frontier town in Northern Botswana. The entire town and all it’s inhabitants revolves around the coming and going of the river. After drought and harsh conditions meant dry riverbeds and the death of many cattle, goats and wildlife in the wilderness areas last year; combined with the lockdown climate that we find ourselves in at the moment, this years arrival of the life-giving water was even more greatly anticipated. We’ve been watching it’s progress through the Okavango region towards Maun for weeks now, and finally yesterday morning (middle of the night for Botswana), it pushed its way into town and was welcomed with open arms. Frogs, catfish, crocodiles, birds, donkeys, hippos and humans all rejoiced! Once you have seen these seasons, they always live with you, and yesterday morning we got to relive it again. Thank you so much to all involved in bringing it to life, for raising funds, for putting in effort and time and passion that was palpable! The water could have snuck in while we were all in ‘stay at home’ mode, but instead it was heralded into town with the reverence that it deserves. And the River Gods gave their thanks with a swirling hippo in the foam. Photo and video credits below. Hugest thank you to the Rawlinson family.

06.01.2022 When you are deep in pure wilderness, your senses are softly roused. Subtle sounds become your marker for dawn. There is no alarm clock, no iphone pings. The firewood crackling, a wooden spoon against a cast iron pot of porridge; the shuffle of feet preparing warm water for your washbasin; the high pitched cry of a jackal. These are your morning markers now.... If you allow it, it will be the most primal form of peace you have ever experienced. Not every camp can offer this priceless opportunity. The more glamped up and connected (digitally) lodges become, the more barriers exist between you and this rare, yet innate feeling. When the disconnection from the outside world is permitted, the reconnection with the wild and inner world is found. We believe and trust so wholeheartedly in the simplicity of high quality, light footprint safaris like this. It’s the experience itself that is luxury. Food for the soul in every way, that also thoroughly respects the habitat. Trust us when we say that very few places or people offer this in Africa. Ah, how I wish I could be there as planned. Next year Beagle Expeditions, next year. #africanfamilysafaris #beagleexpeditions #kweenetrails #dawnsounds #lightfootprintsafari #luxuryisintheexperience #simplicity

04.01.2022 We have a long history with Africa. She’s in our blood and our blood is in her. Whilst living and working in remote Botswana in 1999, our founder, safari guide Richard Field, found himself in a surprise confrontation with a lioness that didn’t stop her charge. Richard sustained upper body and head injuries, and together with his fiancée (now wife & co-director) Beck Field, they left the bush behind for some much needed physical & emotional recovery time. But the African bus...h has a way of calling you home. Not only did they return to Botswana, but they went back to live and work in the wilderness, leading and facilitating safaris for many more years. Fast forward two decades: with an unquenchable passion for safari and two gorgeous daughters, Rich and Beck are widely regarded as authorities on African travel for families. This has, of course, required some serious field research. In 2018 they embarked on a seven month African adventure with their daughters, to uncover some hidden gems and fully immerse themselves in every potential African family experience they could find. Here’s a little interview they did on live television on Weekend Sunrise in Australia about their amazing trip. https://twitter.com/sunriseon7/status/1147291177315520512

04.01.2022 Quietly, quietly, one foot in front of the other. Daily walks guided by Simon Byron are a highlight of time spent at Kweene Trails. Viewing wildlife on foot provides an entirely different perspective, and an appreciation for delicate grasses to giant pachyderms. #africanfamilysafaris #beagleexpeditions #walkingsafaris #lightfootprintsafaris #disconnecttoreconnect

04.01.2022 It’s World Ranger Day, and there is no better time to recognise all the dedicated men and women across Africa that have chosen the life of a ranger. Thank you for being on the frontline, protecting Africa’s precious wild species and the habitats they live in. Covid-19 and the absence of tourism dollars has had far reaching impacts on the ground in Africa; leaving the livelihood of rangers, their families, and the wildlife itself more vulnerable than ever. In a time wh...ere many things are out of our control, it’s wonderful to be able to get behind the inspired and proactive initiative of Ride4Rangers. We are excited to get on our bikes and join many other African travel industry friends and colleagues, in conjunction with Tusk, to raise much needed funds for rangers, their families and ultimately for African conservation. If you’re in the UK and feeling the need for a challenge, why not join the actual epic 2 week ride from Lands End to John O’Groats? If you’re elsewhere around the world, join in virtually, log your ride and donate. Or support someone that’s willing to don the lycra and pump some hills! If you’re in Sydney, we invite you to come and join us and our family as we #ride4rangers. DM us for dates and details! 10km / $10 / nominate 3 to do the same. Every cent that is raised will be matched by Tusk, doubling the fundraising efforts. So let’s get outdoors and get riding. Do it for the rangers, and the wild places and animals that they protect. 03.01.2022 An exhilarating helicopter journey, flying low over the waterways of the Okavango Delta, is the perfect way to say goodbye to Beagle Expedition’s Kweene Trails and hello to the stunning floodplains of Machaba Safari’s Gomoti Plains Camp. . Gomoti Plains and the intimate Gomoti Private rate highly with every traveller that we’ve ever sent there. I was so looking forward to experiencing it for myself! . 03.01.2022 Who is the tallest of them all? World’s highest blood pressure. A half metre prehensile tongue.... Longest neck of any land mammal. We chose them for our logo. Isak Dinesen famously referred to them as a family of rare, long-stemmed, speckled gigantic flowers slowly advancing..... Unique to Africa, the giraffe is splendid in it’s stature and peaceful in it’s nature (unless of course they feel threatened, then they’ll kick you from here to Timbuktu). 03.01.2022 When you really want to be noticed....swoon! Such amusing and interesting behaviour by this Dwarf Mongoose to the Yellow-billed Hornbill. In fact, the bird and the mongoose often interact in seemingly positive ways. The hornbills have been known to visit the burrows of the little mongooses in the early morning, and will gently call to let them know that the coast is clear of predators. They are often seen foraging near to each other, benefiting from one another’s unearthi...ng of prey. But this interaction is something else! Caption it for us, we need a laugh ..... 01.01.2022 The fresh floodwaters are in, a low mist rests across the floodplains. Flocks of herons and egrets fly up from their nightly roost, looking for a good place to catch some breakfast.
