14.01.2022 Calabash tree, scientifically known as Crescentia cujete is used worldwide for its medicinal and healing components among many other uses. The tree produces large spherical fruits, up to 50 cm (20 inches) in diameter, the hard shells of which are useful as bowls, cups, and other containers when hollowed out.In the Philippines the fruit is called the miracle fruit. A research in the Philippines showed that the Calabash fruit and leaf extracts contain flavonoids such as quercet...in and anthraquinone, the important phytochemicals for antiangiogenic activities, a process that inhibits the growth and development of new blood vessels in the body. (Don't ask me what it means) Antiangiogenesis controls the spread of tumour cells in the body by disabling the transport of nutrients toward the cancerous cells. Blood cells are responsible for nourishing the growth of such cells. In a laboratory experiment, it was evident that the extracts halted the formation of new blood cells in ducks. Therefore it is believed that calabash fruit and leaf extract could be a natural and cheaper source of an anticancer drug. It can also be used as a purgative thanks to its hydrocyanic acid content. The pulp is also used in preparing herbal medicine in the treatment of respiratory illnesses like colds, cough,, asthma, and bronchitis. What other miracle have we missed.
