23.01.2022 Ray Martin explores his Aboriginal ancestry In First Contact, six "ordinary" Australians, four of them with shockingly ordinary prejudices and all of them almos...t wholly ignorant of Aboriginal life, travel the country to experience life from an indigenous perspective. It is a topic particularly close to Martin's heart, in part because of his own indigenous heritage in the early 1990s he discovered his great, great grandmother was a Kamilaroi from outside Gunnedah. But his awareness of black injustice came long before then. "I remember in Gunnedah on a Saturday night at the pictures, all the Aboriginal families were pushed down the front, usually to sit on the floor," he says. "And I was appalled as a 10- or 11-year-old going down the swimming pool and seeing one of the lifeguards hosing down the aboriginal kids before they were allowed to go in the water.
