25.01.2022 It is time that Government (regardless of party) takes a serious look and then ACTIONS adequate funding into the residential Aged Care sector. Families have the right to expect a high level of care within residential homes however this is sadly lacking in some cases, particularly when it comes to staffing levels.

25.01.2022 This is beautifully written. The restrictions in place are to protect our most vulnerable, NOT because staff don’t care or for convenience. Yes, the restrictions sound harsh, but having to tell a family that their loved one passed and it possibly could have been avoided, is more harsh. Thank you to all staff working in aged care homes.

24.01.2022 My role is to help families find the right aged care home for their loved ones, one of the most emotional & stressful times for families that are hearing & reading stories of what happens once they hand over care to someone else. I have to re-iterate that the majority of Queensland aged care homes do a wonderful job HOWEVER as a result of the Royal Commission & unannounced audits, the points I have taken from the attached post are: (nationally not just Wueensl 1. When a hom...e fails accreditation or has a non-compliance/sanction against it- who should be held accountable? People in senior positions/boards need to put their hand up. Don’t respond by blaming the DON - after all, who is monitoring the Director of Nursing? 2. Failing just one of the 44 standards means you are not meeting the bare minimum of care the home must provide 3. A former Minister for Ageing is quoted as saying his job was to keep aged care out of the media - does this mean glossing over problems? I want to see changes and changes that give confidence back to families having to make decisions about care for their loved ones. Please read...

24.01.2022 Finally, a chance for voices to be heard! The Government (both sides) telling our elders they can stay at home with a home care package. Fact: waiting times for allocating, Fact: how many face to face hours, Fact: the hidden costs of many providers, Fact: many new providers saw an opportunity to make money but at what cost?

23.01.2022 I speak to families every day that are going through these exact feelings - please read.

23.01.2022 All business owners and staff - a smile and a positive attitude during these hardest of times .....

23.01.2022 A good reason why it is beneficial for families looking at Aged Care options to use an experienced placement consultant. If a government funded Aged Care home closes for any reason you will not lose the accommodation money you have paid. It is not about choosing a home just because it’s close by - it is not about choosing a home because it looks good from the outside. Even recommendations from friends that dealt with a particular home a few years ago is necessarily good enough. You need to know what is current before making an important decision about a loved one’s care.

23.01.2022 How beautiful- this is true for so many couples where one partner has been struck with Alzheimers. To be blessed with a caring partner is what we can hope for

22.01.2022 And it’s Home Care Packages again...

22.01.2022 While I will not be drawn into any political party "politics", it is about time that there is more accurate reporting regarding wait times for Home Care Packages. It is one thing for any political party to say that there will be x amount of new packages released, another thing thing for people to be approved for these packages however it still remains a fact that the wait times to receive these government funded Home Care Packages is out of control. Families are keeping our elderly at home as that is their wish, thinking that they can manage with a package, again, the reality is that I am seeing more carer stress and emergency last minute admissions to permanent care because of the lack of home care package availability. Something needs to be done and done now!

22.01.2022 The new Standards for aged care have been available for several months for review by aged care providers. It is disheartening knowing that there are some providers that were not prepared for the implementation on 1st July. I believe the new Standards provide transparency and put our residents first - it holds to account those that we trust to care for our vulnerable older people. Treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.

21.01.2022 Dementia and Alzheimer’s are 2 very real illnesses. However, it is also very normal for MOST people to become a little forgetful as they age, particularly those in their 90’s. Please don’t pre-judge a person that sometimes forgets details - look for the warning signs

21.01.2022 It is inevitable that we feel "guilty" when placing loved ones, particularly parents, into an aged care home. The title of this read "Do the families of residents expect too much from aged care facilities" makes me ask - "what is too much?" It is NOT asking too much to EXPECT that our loved ones are provided with dignity, respect, the highest level of care, comfort and nutritious meals. Never stop questioning, it is how we can call aged care homes to account.

20.01.2022 As an aged care placement consultant my role is to assist those looking for suitable aged care, usually for a loved one and occasionally for a friend. I base my recommendations on aged care homes ticking as many boxes as possible to meet the family's criteria and I will not recommend any aged care home that has been sanctioned. My criteria for a quality aged care home is first and foremost that they can provide all levels of care to all residents, having appropriately qualified staff covering all shifts. Why should any aged care provider that has several sanctions at various homes be allowed to remain open when there are so many excellent aged care providers out there?

20.01.2022 Our commitment is that no widow or family member of a deceased veteran will ever face life’s challenges alone. Taking on the hurdles set by social isolation has... been a significant part of Legacy's work for almost one hundred years. Today, there are some 52,000 people currently receiving assistance from Legacy. And we're here to support every one of them. #thepromiseliveson #payitforward #anzacday #anzac

20.01.2022 November 2020 is too long to wait - the Government needs to act now. People waiting for SUITABLE home care packages are becoming increasingly more frail, some passing away before service is provided. Increased qualified staff, specifically for dementia wings and where there are higher care residents are needed now! November 2020 is too long to wait .......

19.01.2022 Our loved ones in aged care deserve better.

19.01.2022 I would support a national register for ALL staff working in aged care. Why should our elders be left in vulnerable situations?

18.01.2022 Why is Richard Colbeck not supporting staff ratios or at least be willing to reconsider opinions of well respected leading authorities that are on the ground in aged care homes?

18.01.2022 Anyone that has been approved for a Home Care Package will understand the frustration at the length of time they have to wait for it to be put in place. While I welcome the news that a total of 5,000 more Level 3 and 5,000 Level 4 packages are to be released, this is a national number and these new packages will not meet the demands of all people waiting. Th reality is that someone waiting on high care packages MIGHT be offered n interim Level 2 package, this then takes that package away from a person that is approved for a Level 2 package. The focus of the Royal Commission needs to be all-rounded - hopefully looking into "supply & demand" of home care packages in real terms with real people who want to remain at home but require assistance to do so safely.

18.01.2022 This is so true...

17.01.2022 The work "restraint" can leave families feeling worried about how their loved ones will be cared for, particularly those that have physical behaviours. I welcome the changes to the Aged Care Standards where monitoring and documenting will be looked at closely - however, it begs the question: Why are some aged care homes only now putting this into practise because it is part of the new Quality Aged Care Standards from July this year? No-one wants to see their mother or father or anyone else in a state of non-cognisance due to being heavily medicated when there may be other softer methods to use.

17.01.2022 Let’s celebrate all our wonderful nursing staff, no matter what area you work in - thank you. You are amazing

10.01.2022 Every resident of an aged care home, every family member and every representative should feel confident that they will be kept informed of any incident that could have an effect on the wellbeing and lifestyle of those being cared for. No more excuses....

09.01.2022 Our loved ones in aged care deserve better.

08.01.2022 I love the Eden philosophy and the aged care homes that are using it have happy residents, lower staff turnovers and very few vacancies which speaks volumes for the care the residents receive.

07.01.2022 I have deliberately refrained from posting general Covid-19 updates on this page as I feel that the community has this information coming to them from many other sources. However, I have just listened to Minster Greg Hunt explaining why there are so many restrictions around visiting aged care homes. My opinion is that he explained the reasons in an easy and empathetic manner. The restrictions are in place to protect our most vulnerable community members as well as the staff that are caring for our loved ones. Please respect the restrictions and understand that our care workers are doing a wonderful job in a time of uncertainty, loneliness and in many cases, fear. We will do get through this, we’re just taking a road we’ve not travelled before.

07.01.2022 This morning we confirmed that a staff member at the Karinya Place aged care home in Laidley has tested positive for COVID19. The thought of an outbreak in an ...aged care facility keeps me up at night. We know that our loved ones in aged care are some of the most vulnerable to this virus. You only have to look at what’s happened in Victoria and NSW to see how tragic it can be. The staff member didn’t work while they were sick and this could make all the difference in what happens next. I have the utmost faith that our public health workers will do everything they can to keep our loved ones in facilities like this safe. We’ll test residents and staff and isolate people as need be, I’ll keep you updated.

07.01.2022 I get asked all the time if I charge a fee. Yes, I do! My clients pay me. I am a totally independent Aged Care Placement Consultant. I do not ask or receive any commission from any aged care provider or associated agent. Aged Care Choices tailors a service to meet it's clients care needs, not to line the pockets of particular aged care providers.

05.01.2022 During the social distancing requirements and aged care lockdowns, Aged Care Choices Placement Consultancy is here to help anyone requiring assistance finding respite or permanent care. All areas of Queensland covered. We offer appointments via phone, skype and face to face where requirements are met.

05.01.2022 For far too long, families have been waiting and trying to access a suitable home care package to help those not ready (or wanting) to go into an aged care home. To me, it is hot air telling the public that x amount of new packages will be released. The issue remains that there is such a backlog of eligible people, these packages will only be filling a small gap. Both sides of government need to look more closely at this problem. Let’s hope the Royal Commission gives this area of aged care enough focus.

04.01.2022 This is a powerful picture.

03.01.2022 Let’s celebrate all our wonderful nursing staff, no matter what area you work in - thank you. You are amazing

03.01.2022 New Aged Care Quality Standards from1 July 2019. All aged care providers should still adhere to and use the Charter of Residents Rights to underpin the basis of their mission to their residents. The government has set some new standards that spell out what good care should look like. These must be implemented from 1 July 2019 The new standards make it easier to check that people receive good care. Good care is not about aged care homes 'ticking boxes'. It’s about them caring... for their residents and their individual needs. Each standard says what you, the consumer, can expect. Your aged care provider has to meet an outcome for you. They have to demonstrate how they are meeting that outcome. There are eight standards, and each one is about an aspect of care that contributes to resdient's safety, health and wellbeing. 1. Consumer dignity and choice 2. Ongoing assessment and planning with consumers 3. Personal care and clinical care 4. Services and supports for daily living 5. Organisation’s service environment 6. Feedback and complaints 7. Human resources 8. Organisational governance See more

02.01.2022 We cannot put ALL the blame on care providers for not taking adequate steps to prevent falls in Aged care homes. While it should be a priority to identify potential falls risk residents, it is also about caring with dignity and this can be hard for care staff when residents resist assistance.

02.01.2022 This announcement does nothing that is giving families renewed faith in our residential Aged Care - a more balanced and expedient grant of money is required where this industry is hurting most - Residential Aged Care

02.01.2022 Valid reasoning to keep Aged Care Home visitor restrictions in place- it is about protecting our most vulnerable community. Below is an excerpt from HelloCare: Very few topics have divided opinion quite like the debate over in aged care homes.... The Prime Minister’s initial claims that aged care providers had been overstepping visitation guidelines were met with heavy backlash by industry figures and aged care workers alike. One viewpoint that has been conspicuously absent throughout the visitor restriction debate has been that of the aged care residents themselves. Under the Charter of Aged Care Rights, residents have the right to have control over and make choices about their care, personal, and social life, including where the choices involve personal risk. The charter also expresses that residents’ decisions need to be listened to and understood. All we need is one person to come in with the germ, and then everyone gets it, and we do not want it here. We are getting well looked after here thank you very much.

01.01.2022 There are many aged care homes that have a facility manager that does not have a clinical background. It doesn't matter - the facility manager is where the buck stops when it comes to a home not only meeting but exceeding the quality aged care principles. They need to know what is going on, where improvements need to be made and last but not least, applaud their staff for doing a good job!
