17.01.2022 Why your border collie is nutz... I want to make it abundantly clear that I love Border Collies. They can be incredible pet dogs and amazing working machines. What I don't love is unethical breeders selling working line puppies to families who don't have the knowledge or lifestyle to offer such a dog. BC's tend to be very high energy, and incredibly smart. These traits are great if the dog will be working with sheep, but clearly can be a pain in the ass if the dog's owner is ...not extremely active and committed to their dog's mental and physical needs. BC's are known for their intelligence, but what most don't know is that intelligence gone to waste will often lead to manipulation. What is a BC? A herding dog right? What is herding? The manipulation of sheep or other animals by a dog. Why would your dog not try and manipulate you if they don't have a job? I see it every day in my line of work. Last week I got a call from a nice woman asking for help with her BC. She had purchased the puppy at a young age from a local breeder and now at 11 months, the dog is completely out of control. Lunging at people, attacking other dogs, chasing cars... you get the point. I asked her if she had done any training with the dog and she said she had been training the dog since the day they brought the puppy home. 3 different positive only trainers, and 9 months later and they still had a dog that was out of control and getting worse. Listen, if your Border Collie is attacking other dogs, biting people, and chasing everything it sees, it's because genetically it's been bred to be that way and hugs, kisses, clickers, and kumbaya's are not going to stop your dog. Your dog is going to need some consequences to learn to modify their behavior. Wait a sec, so if I give him a job, these problems won't go away? I thought a tired dog is a good dog right? Not necessarily. A tired dog is a dog who's preparing for the next lunging session. You need to tire your dog out mentally and physically and let them know that there will be a correction waiting for them at the other end of that bad behavior. I'm not speaking as a hypothetical here. I'm speaking as a trainer who works with dogs like this all of the time who have failed miserably at 100% positive training. Your breeder sold you too much dog, and your trainer needs a more open mind, but if you want to make it work, we do that and I know plenty of trainers around North America who also do too. If you have an insane BC, there is hope, but you are going to have to leave the 100% ethos in your past. Share this post, and help save a dog's life.
