15.01.2022 Dire shortage of tradies: report Research & reports A survey has highlighted Australian workers' migration away from manual jobs to white-collar professions, and the resulting difficulties employers face recruiting technicians and trade workers.... The Australian Industry Group's biennial Workforce Development Needs Survey found 52.2% of the 300 companies involved identify 'technicians and trade workers' as the area where they faced the most skills shortages in the past year. That figure has risen from 33.3% over just four years since the first WDN survey in 2012. By way of contrast, only 8.5% nominated 'professionals' as their area of greatest need, down from 20.4% in 2012. The search for 'managers', meanwhile, remains the toughest assignment for 13.9% of businesses, down slightly from 15.9% in 2012. The survey canvassed companies in four industry sectors: manufacturing (58%), services (22%), construction (16%) and mining (4%).

15.01.2022 Here is a link to the new lists of occupations for 457 visas. If your occupation falls into the short term list (STSOL) and your visa is granted after April 18 2017, you will only be granted a visa for two years and you won't be eligible to transition to permanent residency. Those granted prior to today are unaffected. New visa grants (post April 18th) under the Medium/Long Term List will be eligible for 4 year visa, and they will be eligible to transition to permanent residency after 3 years with same employer. https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2017L00450

09.01.2022 ***Backpacker tax remains political hot potato*** Debate about the proposed Backpacker tax, first announced as part of the 14-15 Budget, has continued in the 45th Parliament. On Thursday, Senator Nick Xenophon urged the government to scrap the proposed tax, which would see working holiday makers taxed 32.5 cents in every dollar they earnt.... Speaking about his opposition to the proposed tax, Senator Xenophon noted the impact the tax would have on the tourism sector and regional and rural Australia workforce. The National Farmers Federation also shares this concern and strongly reiterated its opposition to the proposed tax during its session at the Backpacker Tax review consultation, saying that it was time once and for all that this proposed tax be put to bed. The Queensland Government has also urged the new Federal Parliament to abolish the backpacker tax as one of the first measures of the 45th Parliament. The Queensland Government has said that hundreds of thousands of backpackers come to Queensland each year and according to their figures spend approximately $900 million a year in the state.

06.01.2022 Breaking news from Department of Immigration and Border Protection... The below question has been published in a DIBP agent newsletter today: "Q.What transitional or grandfathering arrangements will be in place for those who already hold a subclass 457 visa before March 2018?... A. More information concerning the legislative details of future changes will be available closer to their implementation date. This will include information about transitional arrangements for visa applicants and visa holders". Although this doesn't explicitly confirm that current 457 visa holders (whose occupation is on the new STSOL, i.e. the short term list) can transition to permanent residency after March 2018, the inference here is that it is probable. This is the first official confirmation that there will indeed be 'grandfathering arrangements' since the original announcement of the changes over two weeks ago.
