22.01.2022 I love the Idas of the world. 105 year-old Ida Keeling has lived her life as no stranger to heartache and adversity. She grew up poor in Harlem, worked in a factory during the Great Depression, her husband died when she was 42, so she raised her four children as a single mother and then lost two of her adult sons to violent drug-related killings. Ida fell into a deep depression. Her daughter, a track & field athlete, stepped in and encouraged Ida to take... up running at the age of 67 and she hasn’t looked back since. At the age of 95 Ida set the world record in her age group for running 60m, and then again at the age of 99 for the 100m dash. In 2016, at the age of 101 she ran the 100m dash to set the world record for women aged 100 to 104 - then dropped to the track to do push ups as the crowd roared. What a woman! She says that exercise is her medicine. Now, aged 105, she trains 3 to 4 times a week - dancing, weights, squats, push-ups and running. She maintains a healthy diet, eating greens, fruits & cod liver oil - plus the occasional splash of cognac in her coffee. Her life advice? Stay strong, love yourself, and do what you need to do, not want you want to do. So next time you catch yourself saying my body is too old for this, spare a thought for Ida and the many others like her. She is a great reminder that it’s never too late to start. #ageisjustanumber #agilityosteopathy #exercise #idakeeling #foreveryoung #athletics See more

20.01.2022 Do you always feel the need to crack your upper back by twisting around your chair? Slumped over your home office desk? Is your back feeling stiff? Dance moves becoming too robotic? Then give this handy spinal mobilisation a go. ... 1. Stand with you right shoulder closest to the wall. 2. Step your left foot in front and over your right foot. 3. Reach your left arm high up onto the wall above - as high as you can reach. 4. Thread your right arm along the wall, reaching as far forwards as comfortable. Think of the arm as an extension of your chest (therefore creating a nice twist through your torso and you reach forwards). 5. Experiment by reaching upwards to the roof, out straight in front and then down to the floor. 6. Continue for 1-2 mins, moving slowly and rhythmically, until you feel a change. Things to note: 1. Keep your eyes on your fingertips as they thread along the wall - this will reduce undue stress on your neck. 2. Stepping further away from the wall will make the exercise more challenging. 3. Think about what you can feel as you go through the motions, and tweak the movements as you see fit. 4. This exercise can also be performed away from a wall (eg on a dance floor) but may attract some weird (read: jealous) looks. But you’re worth it. As always, this exercise and advice is general in nature and is certainly not suitable for everyone. So please get in touch if you have any specific questions you would like answered. #agilityosteopathy #osteopathy #spinalmobilisation #posture #southmelbourne #southmelbournewellness

13.01.2022 As an essential service, we are thankful to remain open for face to face appointments. We are here to support you during this latest lockdown. Alongside our strict hygiene protocol & COVID19 screening and in line with the Deputy Chief Medical Officer’s latest recommendation, we will be wearing a standard surgical mask while seeing all patients. We do ask that during this time you remain vigilant about your health and exposure to others. If you feel unwell ...AT ALL with any upper respiratory symptoms (runny nose, cough, cold etc) we ask that you stay at home. It’s not worth the risk. We have removed our cancellation policy to avoid any hesitation. Please note that Telehealth appointments are also available if you are unable to or do not fancy coming into the clinic. These online appointments will be focused on educating you on self-managed strategies, exercises & techniques to offer relief of your pain & discomfort. See more

09.01.2022 Are you getting enough vitamin D? If you’re living in Melbourne - probably not. This is what you need to know. Benefits of vitamin D controls calcium levels in your blood contributes to strong bones and muscles, dental health & cardiovascular health... improves immunity regulates mood Sources of vitamin D Sunshine (between approx 9am - 3pm) Dietary (5-10%) - Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, herring), liver, eggs, margarine, milk and infant formula You may be at greater risk of vitamin D deficiency if you: Stay mostly indoors (talking to you, locked down Melbourne) Have naturally dark skin - this is because the pigment (melanin) in dark skin doesn’t absorb as much UV radiation Cover your body for religious or cultural reasons Avoid the sun for skin protection or due to medical reasons Are obese, take medication or have a health condition that affects vitamin D absorption from your diet (eg coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis, renal disease, liver disease) Are a breastfed baby of a vitamin D deficient mother The sun’s UV radiation is both the main source of skin cancer and the best natural source of vitamin D. UVB rays provide the vitamin D, and are present once the solar angle is higher than 35 degrees. Your body can absorb a limited amount of vitamin D at a time. So spending more time in the sun won’t increase your vitamin D levels, but will increase your risk of skin cancer. Tricky, huh? So listen up. The amount of sun exposure you need depends on several things including where you live, the season, time of day, your skin colour and the amount of skin exposed. For Victorians, at this time of year, a few minutes in the mid-morning and mid-afternoon (when the sun sits above 35 degrees from the horizon, but the UV levels aren’t too high) should suffice. Luckily there’s an app that helps you figure out just how much vit D you need, and when best to get it: dminder. Go get your vitamin D Melbourne!! #vitamind #sunsmart #cancercouncil #agilityosteopathy See more

05.01.2022 COVID19 Stage 4 Update - Stay Safe Melbourne. As part of Melbourne’s Stage 4 COVID19 restrictions, in-person Osteopathy treatments (as with all of our AHPRA registered health colleagues) are limited to urgent care only and face-to-face routine appointments are currently not permitted. The DHHS has articulated that the current restrictions are designed to minimise movement and face-to-face contact as much as possible. This is about saving lives.... We feel It is our social responsibility to work together as a community and support those who are more vulnerable. So it is with the health of our families, friends and community in mind that we have decided to do our part to minimise movement and cease face-to-face appointments for the time-being. This doesn’t mean you need to put your health on hold for 6 weeks. We are still here for you. Telehealth appointments are available for bookings online. For those of you who have visited us before, we know you and your body. Education, exercise rehabilitation and self-management tools are our strengths, and while you might miss our hands-on approach for the time-being, Telehealth appointments are a valuable way to keep you moving forward. We know this may be tough for many of you, but rest assured we are still here for you and we urge you to stay in contact. Please remember: Reducing movement - saves lives. Stay safe, do your exercises, and we look forward to seeing you in person once again in due course. Laura x See more

05.01.2022 2020 has been a challenging year in many ways, and some of us might be new to the feelings of stress, anxiety, depression and isolation. So it’s not surprising that this year we are placing an emphasis on what to say/do when someone answers no to R U Ok? Now, more than ever as we are physically distancing ourselves, it’s even more important that we promote a sense of community, reach out and ask our friends, family and colleagues Are you ok? and be prepared to f...ollow the question with genuine concern for the mental health and well-being of the people around us. Remember that it’s very normal to not feel ok. Reach out to your strong friends Reach out to your happy friends Reach out to your quiet friends A conversation could save a life, or at the very least, have us all feeling a little more connected. 02.01.2022 I read this book many years ago in London after a patient had highly recommended it as a means of dealing with her chronic pain. It was an eye-opener at the time, and I have since lost count of the number of times I have both recommended it and re-read it myself. Mindfulness is the practice of mental training. Just as physical exercise is crucial for our bodies, mental exercise is crucial for our mind. It has been shown that anxiety, depression and irritab...ility all decrease with regular sessions of meditation. Memory also improves, reaction times become faster and mental and physical stamina increases. It has also been found to be effective in reducing the impact of chronic pain. So what is mindfulness? Mindfulness is about observation without criticism; being compassionate with yourself. It’s about observing your thoughts and feelings as things you experience, rather than letting them define who you are. It also encourages you to break some of the unconscious habits of thinking and behaving that stop you from living life to the full. Early in the piece, I remember the sense of freedom I felt when I swapped my inconvenient & rushed coffee dash in between patients (I spent more time waiting for the coffee than I did drinking it) for a moment of mindfulness practice. This one moment of practice liberated me from the time pressures of this regular habit and left me feeling more refreshed than the coffee ever had. You don’t have to hum or sit cross-legged on the floor. It’s not religious. You don’t need to adopt a new diet or wear flowers in your hair. It’s not complicated, nor does it take up a lot of time. But just like any skill, it takes some practice, patience and perseverance. Mark Williams & Danny Penman have created an eight-week program to help you focus and find some calm amidst the storm, and I’m here for it. #agilityosteopathy #mindfulness #lockdownreading #mentalagility #mentalhealth #southmelbourne #osteopathy
