25.01.2022 This is one lucky frog. Found it inside the back door of my car. How what why??? Lucky it wasn’t squashed. Anyway now sitting happily in the veggie garden amongst the nasturtiums. Gees I love frogs. Even though it pissed on my hand
24.01.2022 So much fun. The new generation of native bee keepers!!
24.01.2022 It’s that time of year folks. Let’s get out in the yard and count those pollinators!! You can do it It’s on now till Sunday 19th April.
23.01.2022 Such exciting news about our bees. The more we research the more we find how amazing they are.
23.01.2022 Friday Rainy Rescue. A stump with native bees. Fortunately the home owner knew what they were and called me in. What a great day to rescue bees. No one wants to go out in the rain! You can see the entrance half way down the stump but from the top you can see the thick batumen blocking where the original hollow probably formed between the two main branches. #agreensoul
23.01.2022 Happy customer today. Nearly one and a half litres of honey out of two bee hives that were only split 18 months ago. Very good result in that time. Liquid gold - and worth more than the gin that was previously in the bottles #agreensoul
23.01.2022 A Green Soul isolation project number 2. Microbat houses. Made out of old stuff I had lying around. Microbats are tiny little bats, some weighing as little as 3 grams. They can eat up to 1200 mosquitos in a hour. Crazy right? As usual, habitat loss is seeing their numbers decrease so these provide somewhere to roost during the day. Will take a little while for them to find the boxes but I will keep an eye on them (they have a flip top lid to spy). One box out the back, one out the front, and one on the footpath to provide a greater spread of housing. #agreensoul #microbat
22.01.2022 My brother Phill Driver is taking his bee keeping role seriously now. A fantastic rack at the back of his shed made from recycled service station petrol tank checker thingys. Good job bro! #agreensoul #australiannativebees
20.01.2022 There is cool stuff everywhere. You just have to look. See what I found crawling up our bin today. This awesome Case Moth caterpillar. They make these little mobile homes to drag around and hide in. Normally you see them hanging off a branch but for some reason this one thought the bin might make a nice place to hang out. A simple trip to the bin made my day!! #agreensoul
20.01.2022 Day 13 of quarantine after flying back from NZ. And I’m only just catching up on my job list. Today’s creation - a little bee house to hold a couple of hives. Made from free pallets and cheap mis-tinted paint from Bunnings. Cheap but time consuming - but time is what I have right now!! This was a recent split hive so from the same family. If they were from different families I could not keep them so close together without fighting. #agreensoul #australiannativebees
17.01.2022 Now that’s a serious bee hotel. Found this today in Pomona on the Sunshine Coast. Mostly Leaf Cutter and Resin bees from what I could tell. They have clay in big bamboo sections for the Blue Banded Bees. A clever idea. This is a very successful hotel - many many holes are sealed up just waiting for Spring when they will all bust out and start the new generations. #agreensoul #beehotel #pomona
11.01.2022 Happy World Bee Day everyone!!
11.01.2022 Who wants to learn about native bees??
10.01.2022 Fathers Day hey? What do you buy the native beekeeper that has truckloads of boring old rectangle hives? A Treasure Chest hive of course! One of the beautifully crafted hives from Steve at @nativebeehives . And I even have a fresh nest rescue to put inside to occupy it. This will take pride of place in my courtyard. Thanks for the pressie @shardy1968 and @toobywedge
09.01.2022 So that’s a wrap. First class of Native Bee Keeping 101 at Art and Life Workshop Newstead. A great bunch of eager learners and some fun building bee hotels. And of course a hive split and honey tasting. Feeling very excited about the future for our bees. #agreensoul
08.01.2022 A Green Soul headquarters isolation project number 1. A Blue Banded Bee house. These bees (second photo which is not mine) are one of our most beautiful native Australian bees. Big and noisy, they are buzz pollinators. So if you have tomatoes in your garden, it’s likely that these guys have pollinated them. They are solitary bees and the females nest in soil. They like a fine clay loam, which I found out you can’t get from landscape yards. So I made my own. I only have about ...200mm of top soil on our block before I hit clay, so with the help of the chickens (actually they were no help at all - they just scratched soil back in the hole) I excavated some clay, squashed it with the trusty boots, sieved and added some sand. Then wet down and into some guttering blocks. The house is made of an old pallet I pulled apart yesterday and I have used the roof space for some other solitary bee nesting space. Now to wait for the bees... #agreensoul #bluebandedbee #beehouse See more
05.01.2022 I got this cool native bee log from a client yesterday. It’s smaller than it looks - only about 40cm long. So the nest must be quite small but it’s very active. He found it at a demolition job. No idea of the history. The open end is sealed with hard batumen the bees make with tree resins that harden. This keeps the pests out. The log is deteriorating but I will keep it like this as long as possible. Our bees are such resilient creatures. Over millions of years nesting in dead trees that eventually fall over, they are so good at managing trauma and damage to their nests. #agreensoul #australiannativebees
05.01.2022 Some interesting finds under the canopy of our olive tree this morning. A Teddy Bear Bee sleeping in (another awesome Australian Native bee). Some of my stingless bees - these will likely be males kicked out of the hives below. They do this when it gets colder cause the males do no work and just laze around. So when resources start to get important out they go. They hang around for a while sulking. And of course a great place for a spider in the canopy to catch those stray insects. So much life in just a small space. #agreensoul
04.01.2022 I can’t believe it’s nearly peach season already. The flowers are blooming and I already have small fruits forming. Haven’t even thought about my battle plan this year for the wildlife. I think I get about 10% of the peaches before the possums rats and anything else that moves gets them. Bloody nature..... #agreensoul
02.01.2022 My two favourite things - bees and beer. This collaboration between Aether Brewing and Flour & Chocolate Patisserie is a Nitro Bee Sting Cream Ale. Tastes like custard hmmmm. So different. Thanks for finding it @aussiebazza #aetherbrewing #agreensoul
