03.01.2022 Do you know what irradiation is? How it will help Australia increase export of our fresh fruit and vegetables? Irradiation is a safe treatment that helps preve...nt the spread of pests and diseases during domestic and international trade and is fast, high capacity, chemical-free and a cost-effective alternative to the current cold disinfestation and heat (fumigation or vapour) treatments. We are taking the lead in a new project with national and international researchers to investigate the effects of irradiation on pest and diseases, product quality and shelf life, and barriers to market access. The start of the project coincides with the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) approval for the use of irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment on all fresh fruit and vegetables.
