18.01.2022 Early sowing (first week in February) should mean early cattle feed for this farmer near Gunning. Sown on up to 1 metre of moisture with another 14mm the day after sowing. We can’t rely on storms to keep coming but if if there is moisture stored then the chances of growing good early feed are much greater. Such crops can keep growing through extended dry spells as the roots will be well down chasing that stored moisture. Some people call it good luck. Get in touch and I will tell you my opinion.

17.01.2022 BEWARE! This is not a turf grass that has been allowed to go to seed. It is one of the most aggressive weeds in Australia. It is not only taking over farms but whole districts, and many farmers can’t even identify it. To familiarise yourself with it just go to any NSW town or city and you will find it growing on roadsides and along watercourses. This town is Queanbeyan. The Hume Highway verges (Mittagong to Holbrook) are covered in it; nearly 100% in places. Common regional ...locations where it is taking over farms is the Bega Valley, either side of the Monaro Highway (Cooma to the ACT), most of the the ACT, Braidwood anywhere near the Shoalhaven River, around Goulburn and south to Tirranaville. African Lovegrass moves quickly along roadsides commonly spread by water, wind, mowers, vehicles, fodder, wildlife and livestock to name a few. Once on road verges it quickly spreads into paddocks. If you notice it don’t drive through it. It has very low digestibility and will severely reduce carrying capacity and livestock performance. Be careful where you move stock to from that paddock and a 7 - 10 day quarantine should apply before that will have passed any ingested seed. Inspect all vehicles that come onto your farm for weed seeds and refuse entry if not clean. Key sites to check are radiators, vehicle undercarriages generally, any flat surface that might pick up and carry seed, particularly mud under guards. If you think serrated tussock is difficult to control, wait until you get African Lovegrass on your farm. If you can’t identify it you had better learn quickly as you may have your vehicle parked on it or already be carrying seed.

12.01.2022 This crop near Crookwell was sown in March resulted in this hay being baled in November. Not bad for a drought year with rainfall well below average. The reasons for success were a good fallow to trap moisture, weed were controlled the year before, a long season variety and the right fertiliser program. Now is a good time to start preparation for your 2020 cropping program.

08.01.2022 Weeds like serrated tussock, African love grass and Chilean needle grass are threatening the economic viability of many farms across the Southern Tablelands and Monaro. Serrated tussock control in areas like this requires a carefully constructed plan. Come along to the LLS Serrated Tussock workshop at TARAGO on Feb 7th to get some good ideas for your ST control plan.
