20.01.2022 Get to know the team a bit better... Hi! I’m Laura! I’m a speech pathologist at the Port Stephens centre. I live in Soldiers Point with my wonderful husband, Mitch, and our beautiful baby boy, Cohen, who turned one in August (how much longer do we get to call him a baby for? ). I love the ocean, and being near the water! My perfect weekend is spent in the , a hot coffee , listening to Jack Johnson with my boys, a bacon and egg breaky with avocado and a w...alk to the anchorage or beach. I love cooking and enjoy all food, but nothing beats fresh prawns and oysters I love a whole range of music I think a lot of it comes from my parents & grandparents era, as we always had music playing growing up!! I love Dire Straits, Cyndi Lauper, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Queen, Vera Blue, Milky Chance, Fleetwood Mac, The Rubens (and the list goes on). I love being a mum, and am still not yet sick of the Wiggles one day I will take Cohen to a concert, not sure who will enjoy it more! #growingunderstanding #speechpathologist

15.01.2022 Social Yoga Did you know that yoga and mindfulness can help your child build language and communication skills? Our Social Yoga group is a special group program that utilises the calming affects of yoga poses to help your child feel calm, connected and emotionally aware. Through mindfulness and special yoga poses, your child will be encouraged to regulate their bodies, calm their minds and become active learners, allowing them to practice speech sound production, recept...ive and expressive language skills, and social skills. The Social Yoga program is suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years, and is great way to help your child understand how to regulate their body and mind over the busy holiday period, and practice their communication and language skills. 12.01.2022 We would love to wish all of our families, children and friends a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and successful 2021!

10.01.2022 It’s unrealistic to think that a new year will bring magical changes. However, true to my values- I love to celebrate the milestone, take the opportunity to reflect on the year that has been and enter the new year with purpose. At the beginning of 2020, my main focus was completion of our NDIS Early Childhood Intervention Certification. In the midst of personal challenges, we passed our audit with flying colours. We were one of the last face to face audits in the country, as... the pandemic unfolded. In the first month of COVID, our total number of appointments reduced by 40%. We moved to mostly online appointments, and I continued to offer Saturday face to face appointments for children who couldn’t undertake online appointments and while my husband was available to look after my children! We essentially closed our 3 centres and all of our team worked from home for nearly 2 months. We have welcomed new team members to our service, become closer as a team and continued to provide high quality, experienced and innovative speech pathology care to the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens region. I am incredibly proud! This week, I purchased a 2021 calendar (my 2020 turned out to be just a wall hanging with nice pictures, rather than anything useful!). When I opened this new calendar, this quote was on the first page and it seems fitting for reflection on 2020 and going into a new year. Where the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind. It was our strong roots in our team that saw us not just survive, but thrive. In 2021, and with this years’ experience under my belt, I am going deep! We’re strengthening our root system and clearing any weeds! The wind will always be there and continue to keep coming, but there is no reason to fear it! This year could have been the end to A Growing Understanding, but it wasn’t! And that’s because of you: you continued to engage with us, your children continued to participate in our services, you referred us to your friends, tagged your friends in our posts, and did everything to reinstate my confidence that our business is STRONG! Yes, even in a pandemic. I am sending a heartfelt thank you to each of you! I am also wishing you a happy, successful and healthy new year! See you in 2021! ~ Lauren

10.01.2022 Look at those big beautiful smiles at yesterday's Move Yourself Group at Port Stephens The kids had a fantastic time showing us their awesome dance moves, and expressing themselves while working on their confidence and communication skills. We are finally at our new centre in Warners Bay and can't wait for all of our families and children to see our new centre! We are so excited to continue to help our families and children to GROW their skills and allow their communication skills to flourish

06.01.2022 So many of the kids we work with love Lego and I bet many of them enjoyed opening some Lego this Christmas! This is a nice idea from Lego and encourages kids to rebuild the world this Boxing Day so ‘unbox’ those new sets (and old bricks) and get creative! Building with Lego is not only good for fine motor development, it is great for developing simple communication skills like understanding and following instructions, sequencing, and is a great opportunity to chat with your kids about where their imagination has taken them

06.01.2022 If you are anything like me, I do my best work in the evening once the kids are in bed! (Ok- not my best work, but it's often when I remember about the tasks that needed doing between 9am and 5pm when everything is open!). Haha! We have opened up the booking portal on our website, so that whenever you have a few minutes to organise your life(!), you can make an appointment with us!
