15.01.2022 How do fungi improve soil quality? Fungi increase soil aggregation and soil organic carbon. The increase in soil aggregation is attributed to glomalin, a substance that fungi make and coat themselves with that helps them stick to the soil. Glomalin stays in the soil giving it texture long after the fungi die. The texture glomalin contributes prevents erosion and creates porosity that improves filtration and oxygenation of the soil. The increase in soil carbon is due to the fact that fungi have a higher C:N ratio than the nitrogen rich bacteria and so when they die they are the main contributors to stored soil organic carbon. Six, J., Frey, S. D., Thiet, R. K., & Batten, K. M. (2006). Bacterial and fungal contributions to carbon sequestration in agroecosystems. Soil Science Society of America Journal, 70(2), 555-569

14.01.2022 Quorum Sensing at it's best. Aphids only on milkweed in a blueberry block By John Kempf on Jul 10, 2020 06:58 am... These milkweed plants are being consumed by aphids while the blueberry leaves inches away have no aphids on them at all. This is a clear indicator that the soil microbial population and mineral balance is more supportive of blueberries than it is of milkweed. The aphids are attracted to the unhealthy plants, and are taking them out of the ecosystem. If the milkweed were healthier than the blueberries, the aphids would be on the blueberries, and leave the milkweed untouched. Since the aphids are now consuming a plant that might be considered a ‘weed’ in this particular context, does that make the aphids a pest for attacking the plants, or a beneficial ‘biocontrol’ because they are removing the ‘weed’?

13.01.2022 The value of targeting applications with sap analysis By John Kempf on Jun 30, 2020 06:59 am One characteristic of top tier growers is the desire to make decisions based on manage-able data. I have been an advocate of sap analysis to evaluate the need for product applications and to evaluate product performance for almost a decade. In that time, many growers have embraced sap analysis and can’t say enough good things about how it has saved them money by reducing fertilizer in...Continue reading
