18.01.2022 When feeding your horse it's so important that you match calories fed to the calories he needs based on his workload. So how do you put this into practice? Crea...te diets for different workloads and feed them according to the work done on any given day. (FeedXL helps make it super easy for you to create different diets for exactly this purpose). For example, if your horse has rest, light and medium work days, have a ‘Rest Day’, a ‘Light Work Day’ and a ‘Medium Work Day’ diet. And feed them on each day according to expected workload. We've had a few questions lately about whether to increase the feed before or after the increase in workload, and this depends largely on the horse. If your horse tends to feel a bit tired and you know you have a bigger ride coming up you may want to feed extra before. BUT, most of the time I would leave it until after, else you might change his behaviour feeding extra the night before. To keep the diets safe, use the same base ingredients and always make sure the diet has plenty of the same forage. Just adjust the amounts of the high calorie feeds to match calorie requirements each day. Here is an example of how this works for a 500 kg (1100 lb) horse. We are able to start running our events & get back into the sport we love. We have kept our dates as they were advertised prior to covid, and will gather up our sponsors and friends to run a bigger and better show.
