24.01.2022 SUGAR AND PCOS pcos is a complex women's health condition, looking at not only hormonal health but overall wellbeing. pcos is often categorised as one condition, however it should be broken into 4 different categories. androgen excess pcos, post oral contraceptive pcos, insulin-resistant pcos and adrenal pcos. There is also hypothalamic amenorrhea which is often misdiagnosed as pcos.... as no two categories of pcos are the same, no one diet is right for pcos. it is multifaceted and all areas of health for the individual need to be addressed. one thing we do know about all these different categories, is that the body prefers when blood glucose levels are balanced and maintained throughout the day. having a diet high in refined sugars / simple carbohydrates can create further unbalance. this may mean limiting or avoiding confectionary, honey, maple syrup, dates and date rich products such as vegan raw treats and paleo treats. it also takes us back to delicious fresh wholefoods, seasonal veggies, fibre, good fat and clean protein. before changing your diet always speak to your health care professional #aharahealth #pcos #dietarysupport #sugar #processedsugar #vegan #pcoslifestyle #livingwithpcos #pcosfertility #nutrition #honey #insulin #hormonalhealth #hormones #naturopath #nutritionalsupport #nutritionist #newportbeach
23.01.2022 6 WEEK CHECK UP the 6 week check up is for both bub AND mum, however, bub is usually the center for attention at this check up. when going for your appointment its ideal to use this time for you, to get your pathology retested, check your nutrient levels and see how your overall physical and mental health is doing - you have had a massive 9 months and these last 6 weeks have been a huge learning curve.... so what should you get checked? IRON. giving birth (no matter how babe makes their journey earthside) will result in blood loss. low iron can contribute to fatigue, mood and irritability. VITAMIN D. vitamin d is essential for your immune, hormone and mental health (plus others). mums levels of vitamin d are crucial for bub, as vitamin d is transferred through breastmilk. if you dont have enough - bub wont be getting enough. B12. supporting how iron and other b vitamins are absorbed we need this vitamin for energy production, mood and hormonal health. THYROID. pregnancy and giving birth is quite the event on the body and the thyroid is a sensitive one. it is important to check your thyroid function + antibodies post-birth. the 4th trimester is a huge one, for bub, for you, for your partner and your support team. if you are feeling overwhelmed be sure to speak with your GP during the consultation. there is support for every person and every situation. #aharahealth #postpartum #baby #newborn #supportingmum #breastfeeding #pregnancynutrition #fourtrimester #postbirth #babyblues #nutrition #checkup #newportbeach #newport2106 #pregnancy #naturopath #wellnessclinic
23.01.2022 you sure are and don't you forget it.
22.01.2022 5 SIGNS THAT YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO YOUR CYCLE our cycle is smart, its always telling us how it is feeling - the trick is knowing how to hear what it is telling us. often we have these conversations in the clinic, from the every month I get pain conversations or each month my bleed starts - stops and starts again a couple days later. if you have any of these 5 signs, its time to stop and listen to what your body is telling you. book in for a health check and reassess your well...being. 1. your cycle length is out of wack. irregular cycles, long cycles (>30 days), short cycles (<26 days), skipped cycles - all these changes tell us about our overall health. the ideal situation is a regular monthly cycle, between 26-30 days. 2. your cycle is painful. we have said it before, and we will say is again, it is NOT normal to have period pain. a bleed should start and finish without pain or discomfort. we should also be free from pain throughout the remaining cycle away from the bleed. 3. your bleed stops and starts each month. have a bleed that starts, stops for a few days and then starts again? possibly its time to look a little deeper at your hormonal health. 4. your bleed doesn't come (and you're not pregnant). the female body is amazing, our hormones are on a monthly cycle and with a happy balanced cycle we should bleed. 5. your bleed is extremely heavy, flooding with lots of clots, lasts forever and seems like it is never going to stop. a bleed should some heavier days and some lighter days. on the heavier days you may need to empty your cup, tampon or pad more regularly but it shouldn't overflow, flood. clots, especially large clots need to be addressed. both a long flow and a heavy flow can contribute to low iron levels. this amazing image is from @duvet_days #aharahealth #moon #monthlycycle #womenshealth #periods #nutrition #herbalmedicine #naturoapthy #healthclinic #newportbeach #newport2106 #periodtalk #ovulation
21.01.2022 SLEEP What a touchy subject for some. If you’ve never suffered from lack of sleep you’ll have no idea why this is such a huge topic. If however, like me, yo...u have struggled to get enough sleep, I’m sure you are acutely aware of how challenging a lack of sleep can make your life. And, also like me, you find posts about the importance of sleep infuriating I hate to tell you, but it’s true. Getting enough quality sleep is arguably the most important contributor to your daily health and well-being. I plan to write a journal post about this soon but you should know that herbal medicine can help! If you’re struggling with sleep please reach out. There are things we can do to help with sleep quality, even if the quantity isn’t quite there (due to shift work, children etc) See more

16.01.2022 RASPBERRY + NETTLE TEA two amazing herbs for labour prep and postpartum love. raspberry leaf tea has long been known for its role as a uterine tonic. it is believed that it can help strengthen and tone the uterine and pelvic muscles while at the same time, helping to sooth and relax the uterus - helping to shorten the duration of labour.... raspberry leaf tea can be added from 30 weeks, starting slow and increasing as the pregnancy progresses. nettle is a super nutritive herb, high in minerals such as iron. it is able to be enjoyed during pregnancy and postpartum to support recovery. to create your raspberry and nettle tea, simply grab the loose leaf tea - blend 50/50 and brew daily. you can have hot or cold. we have both these teas in the clinic for our pregnant clients (and practitioners) to enjoy x
15.01.2022 This is absolutely fascinating research: The Egg Chooses Her Sperm Some great research came out of Sweden in 2020 which turns the traditional "strongest sperm w...ins" belief on it's head. It revealed that eggs have something like a tractor beam in the form of a chemical. If the egg decides it likes the sperm, its chemicals tell it to swim faster. If it’s not a fan, the sperm is sent a go-slow message. Interestingly the egg appeared to preference genetic diversity and may not agree to fertilisation with the partner we have chosen! "The more diverse those genes are, the more diverse are the kinds of infections you can fight. And if your partner has a slightly different combination of these genes than you do, then you're going to produce offspring that can fight an even broader array of pathogens and diseases." explained researcher John Fitzpatrick to CNN (2020). So goes to show that even before conception Mamas are programmed to fight for their baby's survival! https://edition.cnn.com//sperm-choice-female-e/index.html Edited repost @theladoula + @shebirths

08.01.2022 using this time to pause and slow down. emotionally, we are feeling it immensely today, feeling suck, and I’m sure the weather isn’t helping. though it’s tough, it is an opportune time to slow down, breath and reestablish routine. at the moment our days start slow; chai tea in bed while Huxley feeds and Piper at our feet, as he sleeps we enjoy breakfast or we go for a stroll. the rest of the day I explore recipes, listen to music, nap and watch movies from all over the globe to escape and dream x
07.01.2022 CAFFEINE we get it, coffee is delicious (i'm Italian, it's in my blood) it boosts energy, gets you out of the office and can bring people together... but what if that daily routine is complicating things, triggering anxiety, elevating cortisol and making us feel overall blah? in the clinic we have a few guidelines (well, rules) around coffee intake.... 1. coffee can happen, however, it MUST be after a meal. caffeine can block our hunger cues, stimulate our adrenal system and affect our hormones. having your morning cup after breakfast can make a world of difference to overall wellbeing. 2. we count the shots not the cups. one coffee with three shots, is not one coffee. 3. if you have anxiety, leave the caffeine alone or switch to decaf so you can still enjoy the routine and deliciousness but not the jitters. caffeine can also negatively affect hormones for some people. 4. ideally no coffee after 12pm. your body needs time to unwind and settle into the afternoon to support sleep. 5. take your supplements and medications away from your coffee. coffee can block the absorption of some vitamins and minerals. photo unknown.. please tag if you know x #aharahealth #morningcuppa #coffee #cortisol #stress #morningcoffee #decaf #caffeine #digestivehealth #womenshealth #fertility #adrenalhealth #stressed
06.01.2022 SAVOURY SEED CRACKERS they are a snack, a hummus holder, a sauerkraut scooper, a pate plate... so naturally they need to be delicious (and nutritious). this little recipe is beyond easy, for most people all the ingredients are hiding in their pantry. the addition of caraway seeds are purely delightful!... naturally gluten free and bursting with fibre, these little seeds can support our bowel and even hormonal health! our SAVOURY SEED CRACKERS are now live in the AHARA HEALTH website x #aharahealthrecipe #glutenfree #grainfree #paleo #lowcarb #vegan #dairyfree #snack #hormonebalance #womenshealth #poop #digestivehealth #recipes #glutenfreerecipes #newport2106
04.01.2022 DO YOU REALLY NEED THAT SUPPLEMENT? I was having a conversation with a loved family member last night when we got on to the topic of supplements... rather the list of supplements that they were taking. my first question was: why are you taking that supplement? and the second was: but did you test beforehand? do you actually need them?... there is often the perception that supplements do no harm.... simply, this is not the case. we can do more harm taking something that the body doesn't need, taking them for longer than the body needs or taking competing supplements alongside one another or medications. with the magic of marketing, over the counter products and unqualified people thinking they are 'helping', I am seeing more and more clients (as well as friends and family) taking supplements unnecessarily - I have literally taken away bags of unneeded supplements from clients. so how do we know what is right for us? 1) the product is prescribed by your qualified practitioner. someone who has your FULL health history, medical reports and previous pathology results. 2) you have had testing done to check your nutrient levels. this one is more specific to vitamins and minerals such as iron, b12, iodine etc. AND you have retesting done to check your progress. supplements are generally there for the short term. 3) the product is of superior quality. practitioner only products are generally more expensive yes, but that is because the ingredients are also more expensive, fewer excipients (additives) and more research behind them. there is a reason why fish oil comes in a small bottle and doesn't sit out in the sun all day long. 4) the product has its ingredients, dosages and nutrient levels listed. turn that bottle around, if you cant see exactly how much of each vitamin, mineral and herb are in that bottle it's not worth taking. 5) you aren't being prescripted a different product after each visit. sure we need to change what products we need, as our needs change, however it takes more than one bottle for our levels to change. if you are being encouraged to grab a different bottle of something after each consult and your pantry is looking like a health food store, perhaps its also time to reasess if that is working for your needs. if you are unsure about your current supplements, speak to your practitioner or book in for a free 15-minute dispensary consultation with one of our qualified practitioners. #aharahealth #supplements #nutrition #naturopath #herbalmedicine #naturopathy #newportbeach #supplement #vitamins #newport #wellnessclinic #ferility
03.01.2022 REAL FOOD there really is no substitute. no matter if you are trying to boost your vitamin c, protein, fibre or any other macro or micro... real food is ALWAYS superior to packaged.... we can get a little bogged down in marketing and labels but the reality is fresh, seasonal wholefoods are always going to bring more to the table when it comes to your overall wellbeing. have a look at your day.. how much fresh food have you had so far? how much will fill the rest of your day? our clients aim for 10 different foods a day and 7-9 cups of veggies throughout the day. #eatrealfood #veggies #seasonalproduce #growyourown #wholefood #realfood #balancedlifestyle #leavethepackets #digestivehealth
03.01.2022 GRIEF for some, its a loss of a loved one, and for others, on some level, its this low lying grief that we have all been experiencing at the moment. it has been a big theme of the week in the clinic. grief for our loss of usual freedoms... grief for canceled events, birthdays, weddings and celebrations grief for delayed holiday plans grief for a job, work prospects and financial stability grief for changed birth plans and expectations grief for flexibility physically it can be making us feel more tired than usual, wanting to sleep longer, say in and isolate. when we are feeling stuck creating a new routine can help, getting out in the fresh air, sitting in the sunshine or by the see. if you are feeling this heaviness, remember you can always speak to someone. share this heavy load.
