23.01.2022 SLEEP IMPROVEMENT TIPS //

23.01.2022 Does food affect our health? // Diet has been used as a foundational medicine by ancient healers for hundreds of years, however it wasn’t until the late twentieth century that diet finally began to be recognised by the West as an important healing force. It is now becoming well known that food affects ALL systems of the body.... According to a Lancet study in 2017, one in five deaths were linked to poor diet - a major risk factor for diseases such as cardiovascular disease, some types of cancer and type 2 diabetes. The problem in today’s society is that we are eating food that is energy rich and nutrient poor, as a result of the food production and processing methods. Therefore, by choosing to consume unrefined whole plant foods (organic where possible) we are choosing nutritionally superior food to that of refined ultra-processed ones, which will have a profound healing affect on the body. By shifting to a plant focussed diet that is low in ultra-processed foods you can expect to: Increase your consumption of antioxidants, minerals, micronutrients & phytonutrients Reduce your saturated animal fat intake Increase your consumption of monounsaturated & polyunsaturated fats Reduce your dietary cholesterol intake Increase your fibre consumption -> healthy gut microbiome Reduce your refined sugar intake Reduce your overall intake of GMO, heavy metals, chemicals, artificial additives & preservatives.

16.01.2022 Every day, unknowingly, we are lathering ourselves with products that are contributing to hormonal imbalances. Conventional products such as sun-screens, moisturisers, lotions, soaps, shampoos, perfumes, hair sprays & deodorants contain petrochemical compounds that are derived from petroleum. These compounds are often endocrine-disrupting chemicals as well, which are commonly known as xenoestrogens. In addition to this, we are also exposed to xenoestrogens in our environment ...and lifestyle through other common sources such as car exhaust fumes, furniture, pollution, commercially raised meat, poultry & seafood, plastics, paints, cleaning products, pesticides, nail polish, insect repellents, toys, clothes, toothbrushes, & even some processed foods. Xenoestrogens are extremely problematic as they can mimic oestrogen in the body - leading to an oestrogen overload (aka oestrogen dominance / excess). Oestrogen dominance is often the underlying common factor for a variety of common illnesses & syndromes suffered by women. From PMS, endometriosis, PCOS, breast lumps, fibroids & infertility to unexplained weight gain, anxiety & insomnia. So what can we do? There is so much that natural medicine can offer for women experiencing oestrogen dominance. Firstly, there are 3 general approaches: Increase progesterone levels naturally, to counter the oestrogen load. Reduce oestrogen load internally through enhancement of liver and gut function. Reduce your external oestrogen uptake through dietary & lifestyle changes. For information on naturopathy consults & packages, please head to my website - www.ahimsanaturopathy.com.au

14.01.2022 You may be surprised to learn that your diet, lifestyle and environment all have a profound effect on your individual reproductive health and on the health of a baby. Put simply, preconception care involves making sure there is an adequate supply of all factors essential to the quality of sperm, eggs and fertilisation. It takes about 2 months for sperm to mature, and the maturation of female eggs is about 100 days before ovulation. Therefore, your reproductive health today is... actually the product of your health, diet, lifestyle and environment 2 to 3 months earlier. It is important to note that there are also a number of factors beyond your control that can influence your fertility, but these slides are focused on some of the things you can do in your everyday life to maximise your chances of conception. 12.01.2022 Over the past few years there has been a trend that I’ve sat back & watched without commentary. I honestly thought it would fade sooner. This trend of simplifyi...ng nutrition down to calories and a calorie deficit is dangerous & in my view not evidence-based if we are considering complete health. Let me explain: Were our ancestors thinner because they better understood counting calories? Simplifying everything down to calories is insinuating that weight is the only risk factor for disease and poor QOL. Whilst weight is 1 risk factor there are many more. With that in mind, promoting food ideas because they’re low calorie despite the fact they increase ones ‘chance’ of developing chronic disease is not being scientifically honest. I’d hate for my mum or family members to be given such advice. I put ‘chance’ in quotation marks for anyone who’s thinking but processed meat consumption & the development of cancer could be correlation not causation. Our understanding that smoking causes cancer is also correlation. Very rarely you’re ever going to get pure causation. Theres too many variables. But when there’s an abundance of strong data, so strong that the association is greater than that between smoking & cancer, & the World Health Organisation class it as a Group 1 Carcinogen (known to cause cancer) you can’t ignore it. If you do, then are you truly truly evidence based? Many studies show if you eat a predominately or completely whole food plant based diet including unrefined grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits & veg you will lose weight without needing to count calories. Hence populations living like this have the healthiest body weights.. they arent obsessing over calories & smashing bacon, soda or other junk food. We didnt get into this mess by mis-calculating calories & thus obsessing over calories isnt going to get us out of it. & yes I completely understand thermodynamics & energy balance but there’s a huge body of science to tell us boiling it down to calorie education isnt the answer for long term lifestyle changes. Establishing what truly healthy food is the first step to long term human health. See more

05.01.2022 I believe the healthiest way to eat is any dietary framework that allows you to stick to as many of these principles as possible over the long term. That is, so...mething you can adopt as a lifestyle permanently rather than a yo-to diet, temporary cleanse or challenge. If we look at the converging lines of evidence from laboratory studies to epidemiology to clinical interventions it’s quite clear - although labels and absolutes sell, the best diet isn’t defined by a particular label but rather a common theme or set of characteristics that allows for individual variation. Sure we can use labels, but to claim any single diet is the most optimal for human health is in my opinion misrepresenting the totality of the science. Put your tweak on it and call it whatever you want. Simon See more

04.01.2022 My passion for holistic health, whole foods, nutrition and herbal medicine began around 5-6 years ago. I started studying naturopathy having never even seen a naturopath before, but I knew I wanted to do something that involved health and helping people. I first tried herbal medicine during my studies to assist with stress and sleepless nights, and have since been using my knowledge to heal my own rosacea. In the last 5 years I have been connecting the dots between our lifest...yle and diet and how it plays a huge role in disease initiation and progression. When it comes to food, I believe going back to basics is a profound way to reclaim our health, power, consciousness and compassion. Eating with the intent to nourish our cells and provide our bodies with the fuel it needs to perform at its best, rather than eating mindlessly for taste and convenience. I hope to inspire people to make a change, however big or small, as I believe we are all on our own unique path to health and consciousness.
