17.01.2022 National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) commemorates two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. 2020 is also the twentieth anniversary of the reconciliation walks of 2000, when people came together to walk on bridges and roads across the nation and show their support for a more reconciled Australia. @ReconciliationAustralia has released this year’s theme - In this together ... which reminds us to work together to further that national journey towards a fully reconciled country. AHPA NT, as an association for health promotion professionals working in the Northern Territory, acknowledges and advocates for the urgent need for equality and equity in all areas of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We also acknowledge and advocate for renewing the focus on Closing the Gap and recognising and respecting the distinctive individual and collective rights and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. What does reconciliation mean to you? Share in your comments below :) You can also win an iPad for sharing your idea of reconciliation through a photo! 13.01.2022 Managing stress and anxiety during uncertain times of coronavirus pandemic can be difficult. Here are some of the tips from experts that you can do to stay well. (thought it would be better for people to watch a video than reading). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I943-gP904 To read more about how to look after your wellbeing, check out https://mhaustralia.org//look-after-your-mental-health-aus. ... If you or your loved ones want more support, check out the eMHPrac website for various trustworthy, Australian, government-funded online, telephone and app-based mental health services. https://www.emhprac.org.au//managing-your-mental-health-o/ Lastly, remember to be kind. These are hard times for everyone, and so it is important to be kind to yourself and others, and to remember things that you are grateful for. Taking brief moments to appreciate little positive things in your daily life, even if it’s something small like drinking a nice cup of tea, can help lift your spirit and stay resilient during this stressful time. Take care - Bua

13.01.2022 We are being asked to either stay in and work from home, or work beyond our usual to assist with the pandemic control. We are also being asked to strictly maintain physical distance wherever we go, isolate or quarantine ourselves where need be. We are now also expected to stay away from our loved ones. While these changes to how we work as a society are being introduced to keep us safe, they are also very sudden. As social beings who depend on social interactions and physical... touch, how can we cope? Perhaps a positive way to look at this could be the time we now have to be with ourselves. With this time in hand, we could look after our wellbeing inside out spiritual, emotional, physical and social. But, how can we do that? One of the answers lies in a practice that has existed even before 2000 B.C. Yoga. Yoga is derived from it’s Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’ which means to unite, harmonise the mind, the body and nature. The initial physical practices developed included ‘Surya namaskara’ a.k.a. sun salutation and ‘Pranayama’ a.k.a. breathing techniques. Till date, these two practices are considered the very essence of physical yoga exercises. Having said that, the practice of yoga has a predominant emphasis on mind than body. The core forms are mostly unheard of - Gyan (mind and intellect) yoga, Bhakti (emotion) yoga and Karma (body) Yoga. In terms of newer practices, Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga and more recently Iyengar Yoga focus to prepare the body to reach that harmony, in addition to getting fit. So in the current context, what are some yogic exercises we could use to cope with these changes and look after ourselves and re-establish the harmony? Asana body postures Pranayama mindful breathing Dhyana - meditation This easy to follow YouTube playlist consists of 17 exercises including asanas, pranayama and dhyana. Each video provides elaborate directions on how to perform the exercise, the benefits associated with exercise and any necessary precautions to be taken. Having personally tried these tutorials, I highly recommend if you are looking for a daily dose of basic head-to-toe yoga. -Anshul

12.01.2022 Living in the NT we are no strangers to ‘Remote’ Living with some of our communities and populations living in very isolated locations. Living in Central Australian outback town of Alice Springs as a young and recently graduated health promotion officer has offered some amazing adventures and provided opportunities that I am very fortunate to experience. However, the past few years learning and growing in this profession I’ve found dealing with the isolation of the remoteness... of my work setting sometimes a struggle to access opportunities for personal and professional growth (without costing an arm and a leg to travel). Enters COVID-19! Now all of a sudden the whole world has flipped and is living in isolation. Remote learning, working and living is the new norm and very accessible where everyone is connecting on Zoom, webinars or video calls. I’m seeing live online groups of; dance, bootcamps, cooking ,yoga classes, or accessing music concerts and notable stage productions may only be a click of a button away. and all from the comfort of your favourite fluffy slippers! In our household we’ve started doing ‘dinner dates’ via video with our family inter-state and ‘going for beers’ with some of mates means sitting at our brekky bar with our phones. In the Health Promotion space, conferences are changing to webinars, meetings to video-conferences and working groups learning to use new online platforms to still work collaboratively on projects from various locations. As a practitioner I am learning new ways to lead and be a part of a team, and how to support others for various professions to develop their understanding around Health Promotion during this quieter time in our service. It feels ironic to say that living in one of the remotest parts of Australia I have felt the most connected in this period of 'social distancing'. Ta Teli See more

10.01.2022 Want to relax? Taichi might be the exercise for you. Mind-body exercises, such as Taichi, have been gaining popularity over the past few decades. This is not surprising, given the increasing number of studies on the positive effects of these gentler forms of exerciseeverything from lowering blood pressure and managing depression to building strength and improving balance. Taichi is an ancient Chinese martial art embracing the mind, body and spirit. As a form of exercise, it... combines gentle physical exercise and stretching with mindfulness. Taichi involves a series of slow, meditative body movements that were originally designed for self-defense and to promote inner peace and calm. To its advocates, it has become a means of alleviating stress and anxiety, a form of "meditation in motion." To learn Taichi online, you can join the free online course hosted by a social club in Charles Darwin University‘CDU Taoteching Club’. To know more details, PM m.me/cdu.taoteching If you’re interested to know about the Taichi philosophy, the following TED talk might be of interest to you: https://youtu.be/8TSEnoAa39s Another TED talk ‘Taichi and the art of self-control’ might be of interest to you: https://youtu.be/TKyLnE2bsEA Lastly, do not forget to exercise and maintain a positive mindset. Taichi, one type of mind-body exercise, might be the exercise you need for maintaining a healthy body and healthy mind. - Vincent
