18.01.2022 The importance of dancing and songs in the Torres Strait Islands[is not] mere entertainment[but] is the most important aspect of Torres Strait lifestyle. The Torres Strait Islanders preserve and present their oral history through songs and dances; in other words, the songs and dances are Torres Strait literature material. Just like any written materials, which are usually illustrations, the dances act as illustrative material and, of course, the dancer himself [sic] is the storyteller (Ephraim Bani 1979, Importance of Torres Strait Islander Singing and Dancing). The Chart' is a song sea song in the Western Islands of the Torres Strait and is performed by Ephraim and Petharie Bani. Happy #OzMusicMonth https://bit.ly/36mAu0c

11.01.2022 Clapsticks are a traditional percussive instrument used by men and women in Indigenous Australian communities, usually to maintain rhythm during song and dance. They are used in ceremonies and social dancing, and may accompany other instruments such as the didgeridoo. Clapsticks, like may Indigenous cultural objects, can serve more than one purpose, such as a digging tool, or as trade items. As part of the 1988 Barunga Festival, Hazel Hawke was presented with a number of gif...ts from women participating in the ceremony. Amongst these gifts were painted clapsticks. Depicted on these items are detailed dot designs specific to the Northern NT region. These items became part of the official Prime Minister and Cabinet Gift registry and donated to AIATSIS in 2017; forming a significant collection of items representative of an important event in our nations history. #FirstSoundsOfAustralia #SongsofAustralia #OzMusicMonth
