17.01.2022 We try so hard to explain Aikido from our perspective, to justify a certain way of training. It has been said by self proclaimed experts in budo that the highes...t level in the martial arts has something to do with a unification of heaven and earth. Perhaps they are right. But I like to think that there is more to a lifetime of Shugyo than a trick I can do with intention and body connectivity to overcome any attacker. Actually there is evidence that even the founder of Aikido transcended himself, as did many other great masters of Japanese budo like Tesshu and Bokuden. Maruyama Sensei has said he believed that Aikido as the founder intended it had more to do with the process of losing things rather than the process of gaining things. THERE IS NO GREATER MISFORTUNE THAN FEELING, I HAVE AN ENEMY. FOR WHEN I AND ENEMY EXIST TOGETHER, THERE IS NO ROOM LEFT FOR MY TREASURE. THUS WHEN TWO OPPONENTS MEET, THE ONE WITHOUT AN ENEMY WILL SURELY TRIUMPH DAO DE JING 69 TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE, GAIN DAILY. TO OBTAIN THE WAY, LOOSE DAILY. LOOSE AND LOSE UNTIL NOTHING IS LEFT DAO DE JING 48 O’Sensei had his moment where, in Iwama he understood Ainuke, and reduced himself and established Aikido, a way for us to have the same experience, a way to elevate the spirit through training the body. Below is his experience, see for yourself the parallels between his moment of self realisation and the teachings of Mujushin Ryu and Ainuke. During the night, at around 2 o'clock, I had gone down to the garden and was standing holding a sword. Then something mysterious happened. Another person suddenly appeared, a ghostly body/being (in fact, it was another version of myself). The being was white and had a sword. It faced me. In this way, training with the sword began. Then, with a kiai shout I tried to strike. In that instant my partner suddenly entered. My partner's sword was suddenly right at my chest. I could not show the slightest lack of vigilance. In the beginning my own movements were slow, but as the training progressed, in the instant that my partner with the ghostly body entered, I cut his wooden sword downwards. As soon as I did this, my partner disappeared.(no enemy) This continued for about three days, but as it continued and I stared fixedly at my partner (kept control of the partner), the sword disappeared.(no sword) At this time, there was no shape of myself that I had seen before. (No self) However, there was the appearance of a lightwhich I thought was a ghostly body. Around me there were many clouds of light. But I was conscious of myself at the time. I had the feeling of holding a wooden sword, but there was no sword.(no sword) There was simply one breath. This continued for two weeks. On some later days when I resumed training there was no wooden sword, no self, no clouds of light, but I felt that what remained was myself filling the entire universe. (No sword, no enemy, no self, one with the universe) At that time there was no hint of white light, and by means of my breath, all the poles of the universe were controlled and the universe had entered my heart. O’Sensei To realise Ainuke, It was said that the three things one must forget completely were his own body, his sword, and the existence of his adversary. Mujushin Kenjutsu is not about conflict , but a fusion of breath, spirit and power.(does this not sound totally familiar with the founders experience of becoming one with the universe?) Let’s try to become the universe, and share the founders image of loss and ultimate gain in our training...
17.01.2022 I have been revisiting the interviews that the late Stan Pranin did with the postwar students of the founder, collecting together their thoughts on the differen...ces between what Takeda was doing and what the founder was doing(there are many that knew and trained with both that claim great difference between Aikido and Daito Ryu, in both execution and feel) when I happened across this gem. After I was shut down for sharing this exact opinion from Maruyama Sensei in Aikiweb, another of the postwar students supports exactly what Sensei said about Ainuke and the highest ideal of the study of budo. Whenever you hear some perceived expert spouting off about the highest level keep this in mind. Ainuke, not Aiki was always the highest level in budo, and what the founder truly aspired for his art to represent. My feeling is that aikido, and by extension martial arts in general, offers a form of love. There is a film of Takuma Hisa taken at the Asahi News dojo back in 1935. He is reading from the Domon, which begins: Budo should be considered a means of following the sacred path of the Divine, a spiritual path leading toward fulfillment of the Divine Mission to create a greater world of infinite absolute goodness, truth, and beauty. Comparing Ueshiba Sensei’s technique in the film with that of his latter years, he himself said, My technique was poor then. Many of his techniques involved repelling opponents backward. In other words, clashing was involved. In aikido, we shouldn’t clash with each other. We should pass by each other. Have you ever head the word ainuke (mutual passing through)?10 What do you think would happen if two experts passed by each other in the street. In the case of aiuchi11 (mutual striking), both of them would be dead. In reality, there would be difference in their abilities, one of them would be hurt. But if experts pass by each other, neither of them will be hurt. This is called ainuke. A person called Sekiun Harigaya in the Edo period first mentioned this, The essence of Japanese budo is ainuke. In any event, this was supposed to be an ideal. In aikido, the best outcome is for two people to pass each other in a flash, the encounter immediately being ended. Neither is killed. Tesshu Yamaoka progressed from Itto-ryu to Muto-ryu. Despite the strenuous practice of kendo, he abandoned his sword. When one attacks you with a sword suddenly, you seize his sword in a flash with empty hands. That was supposed to be the best kendo. It’s hard to reach that stage. Anyway, killing is the worst possible result. Shigenobu Okmura
13.01.2022 An interesting interview with Yoshimitsu Yamada. More about the issues he discusses on the Aikido Sangenkai blog: "Masters of the Universe, the Aikikai and the ...Shihan Certification" https://www.aikidosangenkai.org//masters-universe-aikikai/ "Something’s Rank Black Belts in Aikido" https://www.aikidosangenkai.org//somethings-rank-black-be/ ------------------------ Q: What do you think of the Aikikai system and its future? Yamada Yoshimitsu: (Whispering) do not ask me that Problems are inevitable when an organization grows but there are still many unresolved issues. The Aikikai is trying to rule everything on the basis of reports, hearsay, which do not always emanate from the right people. For example, my students are happy here and they do not contact the Aikikai to complain or ask for things. People who contact them are usually those who want to get something, or sometimes to express resentment. Decisions based on biased information cannot be good. But how can they know about the problems abroad while they are in Japan? There are so many contradictions, inconsistencies, and injustices. The way grades are awarded, the Shihan system, the Aikikai recognitions, all these things are not right and create a lot of problems.
11.01.2022 Form is the path, and function is the doorway. Those that forsake the path, looking only to the door are lost easily in the world of delusion.... those that se...e only the path, forsaking the door are lost in the world of object and intellect..... Those that diligently follow the path, enduring all difficulties along the way, arrive at the door, and entering see no longer the path, the door or the self. One with the universe, all as one, one in all, mundane and absolute born of the same essence... Form leads to function, function to nonduality... No yesterday, no tomorrow, no, today...... Use the path, find the door, burn the map....... The essence of Aikido training............ See more
10.01.2022 There have been a lot of posts over the last few years, with increasing regularity, in regards to the fact that Aikido doesn't work "in the real world". We can ...only fight the way we train people..... There were great prewar masters of Aikido that had to defend their school and its reputation in real life situations, non of them were defeated. Some of them gave good advice, like never stand still and wait for the attacker, but rather move. This is counter intuitive to most Aikidoka, who, even after decades of training stand still like a deer stunned in the headlights waiting for the attacker to come. Now that's well and good if you are teaching the basics, but I have seen even the most advanced teachers and senior classes where exactly the same victim mentality is the norm for practice.... If you have to defend your life, and you are in inanimate, you will, quite literally, become one with the universe....... Train in movement, train to fail, train to get hit and hit. Train hard, then train harder. Aikido is not the problem, the way you train in what you call Aikido is the problem. The prewar time of the great Aikido masters was forged in the crucible called "hell dojo", not peace love and harmony dojo, hell dojo. If you want to talk of effective aikido, I would say to you quite literally "go to hell", after that, it's all up hill....... See more

06.01.2022 You should find a teacher that is a zealot for basic movement. This is the foundation of all Aikido, and understanding these basic movements the foundation upon... which takemusu Aiki is built. These basic movements create body awareness and connections from the root of power to the extremities, they are then tied with mental power or intention and movement power or ki. Creating strong legs and hips - as the hara is the driver of all movement, we begin to rely less and less on the arms, eventually giving up the point of contact as true relaxation is realised. It is at this time that awase is truly experienced as two entities merge into one singularity. Become a zealot for what is right, never surrender to mediocrity. Know that the sword is the source and search for its lessons in every action. Give up the ego to ukemi, allow it to work it’s transformative magic on the body and spirit. See through delusion and misdirection, in truth, neither time nor experience matter, only that which is of itself remains when connection to attachment is removed. Aikido exists in this place alone. Never forsake these basic understandings, for in them exists the entire universe. When teaching, listen most To the rhythm of the cut and thrust. To train in the BASICS, IS TO PRACTICE THE VERY SECRETS OF THE ART Morihei Ueshiba

01.01.2022 Just a few quotes and comments about training. I have put some of the founders poems with short commentary to give some emphasis to Sensei's teachings of Yin/ya...ng and the mountain echo. With the amount of time this is mentioned by the founder in his Koans(poems of the way) it's probably important and worth the time to understand and internalise...... "After four years returning to Toronto, I don’t think I knew any more than 20 techniques! This was the way it was in Japan. We did ikkyo, nikyo, sankyo, yonkyo as standards and a few others. The next year you repeat that again and again. That was it. Now you need to have 600 techniques to have a sho-dan, right? The unfortunate thing about it is that by doing so many techniques you’re killing aikido because it’s all computerized on to your brain, so nothing evolves from you. Why do you have to flow with the person if you are programmed what to do? Without yin and yang it becomes hard to fathom this. The attack is yang but you become yang too and you’re forcing uke into yin. This is why there are so many injuries." Henry Kono You have to be willing to accept 99% of the attackers force before the mysteries of AIKI can be revealed O’Sensei "Blend the KI within THE SELF, Stand erect in the VERY CENTRE Polish the spirit/mind The Way of The Mountain Echo Standing on the bridge that was built, Through the AIKI of Yin And Yang In the great expanse of the Void There is The Mountain Echo When teaching, listen most To the rhythm of the cut and thrust. To train in the BASICS, IS TO PRACTICE THE VERY SECRETS OF THE ART Ah the precious Yin and Yang, Together with THE CROSS OF AIKI Advance with courage With the voice of Yang "Put the active principle (yo)(projecting/filling) into the right hand Turn the left into the passive (in) (Yin, absorbing/emptying) And so guide the adversary." "To see the true things Harmonize the voice with shouts "Yah" Never be drawn into the rhythm of the enemy."(so matching the attackers movement has absolutely nothing to do with the harmony that the founder of aikido spoke of as he clearly states that matching there rhythm/movement is erroneous....) "Blend with (ki-musubi) the Universe of Heaven and Earth (tenchi) Stand in the center (of all) In your heart take up the stance Of "The Way of the Mountain Echo" "In the self-mind standing always In the very center of it I do live The stance (kamae) of Love is " The Way of the Mountain Echo" "The sun, the moon and the earth All have become Aiki Standing on this bridge The great expanse of the sea is The Way of the Mountain Echo."
