12.01.2022 http:// THE 2020 BENCHMARK OF GREEN COVER IN OUR CITIES AND SUBURBS // Greener Spaces Better Places has just released part one of its third national benchmarking report, Where Will All The Trees Be?. Once more it uses the i-tree methodology to understand the overall urban green cover trends across urban LGAs as well as delves into how local government areas of a similar ’type’ - according to rainfall, population and density - are faring.... Already results indicate that 62% of urban local government areas now have more urban green cover than they did in 2016, however the overall decline in green space persists with 69% or urban spaces having seen a decline since 2013. This is in spite of more than 80% of the councils surveyed saying that they have an urban forestry (or equivalent) plan in place. As part of the release, there is an interactive online tool that provides council and the broader community to understand canopy within their own area. Part Two of this report will be released in the coming weeks and take a more detailed look into what key challenges and opportunities facing local government urban greening programs, this is a result of an in-depth national survey. 11.01.2022 Webinar: Decoupling increase in precipitation extremes from the changes in urban stormwater flooding Presenter: Ashish Sharma, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of New South Wales Date: Tuesday, 8th December ... Time: 12:30pm 1:30pm AEDT in bio to register https://us02web.zoom.us//5916056/WN_P6VX6_HIRpO1aA2taXvHpg It is well accepted that warmer temperatures lead to greater moisture holding capacity for the atmosphere, resulting in bigger downpours, creating larger design precipitation intensities and possibly less secure flood infrastructure especially in urban areas. What is less appreciated is the importance pre-storm conditions have on urban stormwater infrastructure, especially in locations that contain significant water bodies. This presentation uses four urban case studies from the United States, Australia and Thailand to illustrate the differing impacts of warming on urban flood security. Each of these locations pose unique modelling challenges, given the near-continuous change urban stormwater networks undergo. It is shown that in spite of this change, there is clear evidence that urban flood security is compromised as a result of rise in temperature, a trend that will only worsen as time goes on. #stormwaternsw #watermanagement #flood #flooding #urbanstormwater #urbanstormwatermanagement #Waterways #healthywaterways #Climatechange #Sustainability
