22.01.2022 NOVEMBER TIP OF THE MONTH SIMULATE COMPETITION Have you ever noticed that leading up to a competition you start to ride differently?... You realise you haven’t practised certain things in a test enough? You may not have run through the tests in your weekly sessions? You find you ride your tests better at the start of the week? Yes. Well I have! This is not good preparation and doesn’t help your self- confidence! This is why it’s so important to simulate your competition in your training. Incorporating it into your training schedule as though it is the norm will not only help you but your horse too. If you know your comp is likely to be an afternoon test then the week or two leading up to that comp you ride your horse in the afternoon. Get your horse and yourself accustomed to the routine. Work out the required optimal amount of warmup for your horse. Also don’t just practise tests the week of the competition, practise movements in your test every day. You don’t need to run through the whole test every ride or week, just bits and pieces. I find it beneficial to ride through a test when i think the horse is ready for that level, video it and then work on what you think needs improvement, do that at least a month or two before the comp and every two weeks work on something new, giving yourself time to improve and perfect some movements. Then video yourself again a week or two out from the competition and you will then feel confident in your ability to remember the test and know if your horse has improved. Tapering the work off slightly before the competition and concentrate on the basics, not just the movements. This will keep your horse fresh, you confident and a competition not seem out of the normal routine and this will help aid and supress your nerves. Its ok to be nervous, think of a competition as exciting to be able to test your training as a formality. Happy riding! To find out more then watch this space for next month’s TIP OF THE MONTH!

Whatever your goal, work out steps to get there, what you need to improve on, how your going to get there. Who your going to get to help you? Give yourself mini goals and checkpoints with timeframes that are relevant and achievable. Work on your weaknesses. Most of all enjoy it! (Finn is as y...ou see in pic) Make sure your instructor knows what your long-term goal is, as they will be able to adjust their coaching style to suit your needs.
