23.01.2022 Always was. Always will be. The Australian landscape has been understood, cared for and shaped by Aboriginal peoples for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were Australia’s first explorers, navigators, astronomers, botanists, artists, farmers and first diplomats. They traversed this vast continent, establishing traditions and practices that continue to enrich lives in each region, including our own, here in Ngunnawal Country. This week we take t...ime to acknowledge, learn and celebrate the extensive history of Australia that has been gifted to us in ancient oral histories, traditions and the many First Nations communities around the country. This NAIDOC week artwork was created by Tyrown Waigana, a 23-year old Noongar and Saibai-Islander man. His winning entry - Shape of Land - was judged by the National NAIDOC Committee to have best illustrated the 2020 NAIDOC theme: Always Was Always Will Be. Learn the story behind the artwork here: https://www.naidoc.org.au//waigana-wins-coveted-naidoc-202 NAIDOC week runs from 9 15 November 2020. How will you celebrate here on Ngunnawal Country? #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC #NgunnawalCountry #AinslieAndGorman #Braddon

19.01.2022 This week is Transgender Awareness Week where we celebrate the wonderful and diverse Transgender Community around us and reflect on our roles as allies. To all our trans and gender diverse friends, you are amazing! It is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the trailblazers throughout history who have campaigned tirelessly for trans rights and visibility, and to honour those who have lost their lives to violence and discrimination. This is also a great time to reflect... and learn more about how we can individually and as a community, be proactive in showing our love and support for those who identify as trans and/or gender diverse. Asking is a great place to start. Visit minus18.org.au for excellent resources to start the conversation. How will you be celebrating the trans and gender diverse community? How can you be a better ally? #TransgenderAwarenessWeek #TAW

14.01.2022 Jason's Plant of the Month is Azaleas! Our gardens are dotted with all kinds of Azaleas, including the Rhododendron ‘White Gumbo’ and ‘Nova Zembla’, whose white and bright pink trumpet flowers open up during spring. They are shade loving plants, that brighten up corners of the ground cover, but behind their cheery faces lies a dark secret. ... Now here’s the real scoop on Azaleas. They are well known for the toxicity in their leaves and nectar and were once used as a veiled threat in bouquets of flowers. In some parts of Turkey and Nepal, bees are fed exclusively on rhododendrons for their neurotoxins, and produce a mind-altering, potentially medicinal, and occasionally lethal honey called ‘mad honey’. Yes. Mad honey. So now we know the real reason we don’t keep bees here at Gorman. The blooming Azaleas. #PlantsByJason #Azaleas #Rhododendron #RhododendronNovaZembla #flower #Springtime #AinslieGorman #GormanArtsCentre #Gardening #GreenThumb #Braddon #VisitCanberra #ACT #CBR #MadHoney

So far these intimate one on one concerts have raised a significant amount of funds assisting 87 musicians who have been doing it tough, in one of the worst years for touring musicians. 06.01.2022 Calla Lily Jason's first plant for 2021! Zantedeschia aethiopica These beauties are native to southern Africa but have made themselves home all across the world. New Zealand isn’t a fan of them, in fact they are in the bad books and it is illegal to propagate, sell or distribute them.... However, Calla Lilies aren’t all bad, they are also able to be used as wastewater treatment plants (actual plants) for their ability to grow in wet areas, helping to filter and clean the water around them. It is also an important symbolic flower for Irish republicanism and nationalism. Known as the Easter Lily, it helps commemorates the lives lost in the 1916 uprising against the British forces in Ireland. #PlantsByJason #CallaLily #EasterLily #ZantedeschiaAethiopica #AinslieGorman #GormanArtsCentre #Gardening #GreenThumb #Braddon #VisitCanberra #ACT #CBR

04.01.2022 2020 has been a tough year, with the arts being hit incredibly hard in the wake of a global pandemic. Despite the changeable and uncertain nature of our year, we are so proud of what we, alongside our local creative community have achieved in 2020. 02.01.2022 Jason's Plant of the Month is Euphorbia! Euphorbia is a very large and diverse genus of flowering plants, commonly called spurge, that has over 2000 members in its family. One such member is Euphorbia Characias Wilfenii, more commonly known as Mediterranean spurge. And it lives in the lush spring gardens of Gorman.... These hardy plants are popular in garden climates like Canberra’s for their ability to survive and even thrive with little maintenance. As you can see, its low effort and high reward with these plants. They are strong, independent self-seeders, so keep an eye on them, as they can get unwieldy. They are also known for their milky sap that can irritate the skin. Throughout history the sap was used to treat a variety of skin issues. For those botany fans, a quick fan moment. Euphorbia’s are the only genus of plant that uses all three types of photosynthesis. Boom! Exciting stuff. #PlantsByJason #Euphorbia #EuphorbiaCharacias #AinslieGorman #GormanArtsCentre #Gardening #GreenThumb #Braddon #VisitCanberra #ACT #CBR
