16.01.2022 A Message to Interested health workers Wishing to pursue to certificate IV in Cast Technology HLT41407. Hello,... I would like to inform any health worker wanting to Pursue the Certificate IV in cast Technology that the course is no longer available as a VET course. This is due to the Health industry Skills Council deleting the Certificate IV due to the small number of Participants taking up the course. The AIOT is endeavouring to have the course reinstated With the new organisation, Skills IQ, this process may take some time, therefore a timeline of reinstatement is impossible predict. There is currently a grace period for existing course participants completing the modules , and must be completed by the first week of December 2016. The AIOT will pass on any information when it becomes available. Warm Regards Terry James. AIOT President.

04.01.2022 Hi AIOT members, I have recently received Confirmation that the Certificate IV in Cast Technology is no longer being offered by the ( RTO ) SWC Training in Melbourne, this decision is due to ASQA the (Australian Skills Quality Authority) National Training Body bringing in changes to alleviate Registered Training Organisations from improper practices with Clients. Health staff wanting to enrol in the course must have a qualified mentor (certificate IV Orthopaedic Technicia...n) in there health facility to train staff , unfortunately health workers who fulfil this role in a Multi skilled Hospital environment including nursing staff employed in small and rural health facilities around Australia do not have the luxury off a qualified mentor to guide them through the course with on site Training, there is also the fact that staff in the rural facilities tend to apply a cast only when required compared to full time cast room staff dedicated to daily Orthopaedic & Fracture clinics and are highly skilled in all facets of casting, splinting, Modifying casts and Tractions, SWC has received many enquiries from health staff that fit this demographic which has forced this decision, also course participants must be assessed by staff who hold both certificate IV cast Technology and certificate IV Training & Assessment, Technicians who are not members of the AIOT and hold the certificates are able to Assess there trainees. Unfortunately there are only a small number of Technicians throughout Australia holding the necessary qualifications which has added to this decision being made. The AIOT has endeavoured to find a solution to this decision Without success as no other RTOs wanting to carry the course, and due to a relatively small number of participants wanting to complete the course it would be not viable for Training facilities such as TAFE to take it on board. So where to from here, our future is reliant on senior Orthopaedic Technicians in all states represented to work together to provide new and existing cast room staff the knowledge and skills required into the future in a working environment which has become increasingly complex and demanding. The AIOT has an obligation to conduct ongoing training for its Members and health industry personal by way of state based training workshops and the yearly National Symposium & AGM, participants attending training days will be issued with certificates of attendance assisting them in pursuing a future career pathway, as a relatively small group of dedicated Technicians the AIOT can only hope that the skill standards Of the Orthopaedic Technician / Plaster Technician is maintained. The AIOT will inform members of any future developments With regards to new training pathways via the website and facebook page. Regards Terry James AIOT President.
