07.01.2022 AIPP Honours - John Gollings - Honorary Fellow It is said, that the vast majority of people in the world only experience the beauty and grandeur of the world’s most important buildings through the medium of photography, as they never get the opportunity to view the building in the flesh.... In Australia, John has been making photographs of architecture for over 40 years. John works in the Asia-Pacific region and much of his work involves long-term cultural projects in countries such as India, Cambodia, China and Indonesia. John got hooked on photography as a boy, but later went on to study architecture and holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture from RMIT University. John’s journey into professional photography, started in 1966 when he took a year off from his architectural studies to work part-time in a commercial photography studio. In the late 1960s, John branched out on his own, photographing for fashion and advertising clients. At the time, he also photographed the first Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan tours of Australia. In the early 1970s, John became a member of the Institute of Australian Photography (now AIPP). As it turned out, John’s journey to becoming an architectural photographer really kicked off when many of his architectural student classmates graduated and were looking for someone to document their buildings. At the time, John had a somewhat quirky style and often used creative techniques which were new to architectural photography. This appealed to many of the new breed of architects. John was an innovator and stood out from the pack. In the ensuing years, John has been the 'go-to man' of Australian architectural photography and is recognised worldwide as a leader in his field. John has been published in numerous books, his work is held in significant national and international collections, films have been made about him and he was the 2010 co-creative director of the Venice Architectural Biennale. John has been a two-time recipient of the Australian Institute of Architects Presidents Prize, awarded the inaugural William J Mitchell International Committee Prize and in 2016 John was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for 'significant service to photography through the documentation of iconic architectural landmarks in Australia and the Asia Pacific region'. - Greg Hocking
