13.01.2022 When Should You Replace Your Old Air Conditioner? At AMG we generally recommend replacing air conditioning units that are more than 10 years old. This is becaus...e the newer models on the market are not only quieter and more energy efficient, they also no longer contain the older types of ozone-depleting refrigerant gasses that are currently being phased out. Here are a few signs it might be time to consider replacing your old air conditioner: Your air conditioner is noisy. Air conditioner noise can happen for a variety of reasons for instance a hissing sound may signify leaking gas, buzzing or screeching might mean a faulty compressor, while clanking may indicate a loose part or damage to the housing. Noise may also indicate the air conditioner is dirty or contains debris, but if cleaning it does not fix the problem, you should get the unit checked over by a professional. If the problem cannot be easily fixed, it might be time to consider replacing your unit. Costly repairs. Before going ahead with any repairs, ask your technician to conduct a thorough check of the unit and to ascertain how much longer it is likely to last, and to provide you with a detailed quote. If the air conditioner is on its way out and / or the cost of repairs is very high, it may be time to think about a replacement. Too many service calls. It really isnt normal to be calling for a repair technician every month or few weeks. If you find yourself doing this, you are likely to save more money by installing a new unit. High energy costs. As mentioned above, the newer units on the market are more energy efficient. Older units in poor condition or that are leaking gas may also struggle to cool the air and be pushing up your energy bills. Uneven cooling throughout the building with a ducted air conditioning system. This may indicate the unit is struggling to cope with the demands made of it. Your unit is leaking refrigerant gas. As previously mentioned, the older gasses are being phased out. Replacing them with a newer type may also involve replacing major parts of the unit, which is likely to be very expensive.

05.01.2022 With winter well on its way and high electricity prices seemingly a fact of life, its a good idea to start planning now to avoid huge power bills this season. ...Fortunately, there are ways to keep your bills down, without having to resort to wrapping up in piles of blankets in an unheated home! What contributes to high energy use and what you can do about it Older appliances units that are not in top condition and are struggling to operate can add to energy use. For instance, is your hot-water system leaking and in need of repair or replacement, or is your home heating noisy and inefficient? If you do have older appliances, consider replacing them with newer more energy-efficient models, and keep your units in good repair as well. Draughty buildings if your home is cold and draughty, you might need to replace your insulation, or seal up any gaps around windows or pipes that are letting the cold air in. A lot of heat can be lost from a building due to poor insulation in particular. Less outside light in winter there is more need for electric lighting. But you really dont need to have your whole house lit up like a Christmas tree make sure to turn off the lights in rooms that are not being used. Also consider replacing your globes with more energy-efficient ones such as LEDs. Longer showers during winter many of us are probably a bit reluctant to exit a nice warm shower on a cold morning. Hot water heaters can also struggle a bit to reach their set temperature. You dont need to give up your lovely warm showers in winter, but try reducing the time you spend in them a little in order to save hot water. Every little bit helps after all! Overuse of heating it really makes little sense to go around in t-shirts and shorts while the central heating is on. Put on some warmer clothes before deciding whether you really need to use the heating. Do some inside exercise as well to warm up once you start moving around, you might find you really dont need your heating on full blast. Maintain your appliances we recommend keeping home air conditioning units in a clean and well-maintained condition so they can operate at their optimal level. If your air conditioner has adjustable louvers, tilting them towards the floor also helps to warm the room in cold weather. Reversing the direction of ceiling fans during winter can also be helpful. Winter forecast for 2014 According to the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures from May to July in 2014 in northern Australia have about equal chances of being warmer or cooler than average for this time of year. This means its unlikely to get much colder than normal, and certainly Queensland and northern NSW dont generally get the low temperatures of the southern states. It can still get a little chilly though, so start preparing now and you should be able to keep your 2014 power bills well under wraps!
