23.01.2022 I got some time on the workshop this afternoon while the plumbers were prepping the site and Liz was at work... so I made a small brick cutting jig. The big advantage of our black form board molds is that they always give you 5 uniform sides. When it comes to cutting the base angle into each row of bricks, the angle should be pretty much the same on a uniform brick. This jig lets us set up the length and angle and then cut heaps of bricks base angle at once. The theory is th...at this will really speed up the time it takes to get a row of bricks up?? It has a sliding base to adjust the length of the cut from the backboard. It also has sliding arms to adjust the angle of the cutting plate. I recycled these sliders from an old easel I also gave it a base plate so it could be flipped to cut on the horizontal or the vertical. Excuse the novice carpentry skills... I’m not that skilled at this stuff but I have a go I get a kick out of everything in this is recycled or offcuts!

17.01.2022 Getting the midgets involved in brick stacking... the piles are slowly creeping out along the edge of the store area!

13.01.2022 Here’s our thoughts on the 2 different foaming agents- Earth Choice Dishwashing Liquid ($40 for 20 litres) and Extreme Foam Marker from Tasman Chemicals ($140 delivered for 20litres). We have now tried them both. We started out using Extreme Foam Marker. It generates good foam that holds its weight really well in the mixer and ultimately spreads your bags of cement further to fill more molds with consistently good bricks and very few brick cracks or losses per batch. We cou...ldn’t source it for a while because the company had no stock left (are making more) so switched to using the Eath Choice for the last few batches. We noticed first off that where we were easily filling our 4 big molds with 3 mixes (15 bags cement) from Big Bertha the aircrete machine... now we were coming up short. Over our normal 6 mixes in a days pour, we ended up 12 big bricks less out of 180 bricks poured) and couldn’t fill all our normal molds. The only thing we can put this down to is that Eathchoice deflates a little in the mixing process. We have also had quite a few extra brick losses with earthchoice in the large flat csection molds. This last time we lost about 14 bricks. The black molds and syntropic molds have had no losses though? Otherwise the bricks produced look and feel the same as when using the Extreme Foam Marker. I think if money was no issue then the foam marker wins hands down.., better foam quality, very few losses, and more quantity to each bag of cement. But Earth choice definitely does the job a lot cheaper! As long as you are ok with a bit less quantity per pour and a few more brick losses at the other end.

07.01.2022 The rain has held off today to let the plumber prep the foundation for our waterworks. The concreter is due Monday (weather permitting... it’s not called a rainforest for nothing ). Won’t be long and there’s going to be a heap of circular concrete on our pad!
